Magic Academy is a PlayByPost roleplay hosted on the TVTropes forum, centering around the daily lives and adventures of a group of magic-practising students.
Twenty years ago a catastrophic blast of magical power shook the world, killing millions and splitting the continent formerly known as Europe into five parts, that have since been waging war with each other for five years and counting. However, for every one person killed another two were given magical power, a miraculous trait that then passed down to their children. This event became known as "The Day The Magic Came Back", or M-Day informally.
In 1976, in order to accomodate the sudden outburst of magical children, Garret Gamman founded one of two magical academies in the world (his being situated in New York while the other was created in Kenya due to Africa and North America gaining the largest magical populations). Kids were typically enrolled at the age of 15, when their magic tended to fully manifest, but while they are safe from the former-Europe war in the academy, other dangerous factions are making sure their school year remains highly eventful.
The roleplay was created by Bluesunnyday, who has since stepped down as a GM and player. The position has now been taken over by NickTheSwing, who along with various antagonists and [=NPCs=] also plays student Reitt Blenforte.

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Any student who came from the war-torn former Europe, and a few more who didn't.
* ForbiddenZone: The Forbidden Garden just outside the academy. Alex and Fantasia were all too happy to go and try to check it out.
* FunctionalMagic: The main theme of the roleplay. While the original source of magic was an explosion, all the students have the inherent gift version (being specialised in one type of magic but able to study others), and magic is performed through the use of painting runes with their wands. The various types of magic the characters specialise in so far are:
** ElementalMagic
*** PlayingWithFire: Ellisare and Nyro.
*** ShockAndAwe: Fantasia. Reitt can use black lightning.
*** MakingASplash: Alex and Amber.
*** TheBeastMaster: Nate, though it's more platonic than some examples.
*** {{Necromancer}}: Gretchen, in the classic 'talk to the dead' sense.
*** AnIcePerson: Kaleb.
*** GravityMaster: Fantasia's familiar Galaxy.

** SummonMagic: Taurin can summon animals from the zodiac, though he prefers bulls. Reitt has [[DarkIsNotEvil Dark Summoning Magic]] that allows him to summon black golems. Eduard has [[PlayingWithFire fire]] summoning, and Charlotte has [[HealingHands healing]] summoning.
** [[MindOverMatter Telekinesis]]: Sammy. [[spoiler: Possibly Nyro.]]
** [[{{Shapeshifting}} Transformation]]: Zavi.
** Brendan is also able to enchant objects, and often enchants plenty beforehand so he's constantly prepared.

* GeniusLoci: The school seems to have a mind of its own, changing the architecture whenever it wants.

* KnightOfCerebus: Daigo's first appearance was the first time two characters fought in the roleplay. Even more so is Qord, who sneaks into the school and brutally murders two students.
* MageTower: Where the main dormitories are situated.
* MoodWhiplash:
** At one point Sammy and Gretchen are having a tearful discussion about the former's dark past. There's then a brief cut to Alex cheerfully whistling as he walks down a hallway.
** After a relatively normal and cheerful first day, two students are found gruesomely murdered in the main hall the next morning.
* {{Physical God}}s: The Velke, demi-gods who appear a lot younger than they are.
* ShrinkingViolet: Gretchen. She breaks down crying when too many people surround her.
* WizardingSchool: Obviously.
