* {{Irony}}: Bismuth told Steven in as much words that she believed he could "roar" like the Diamonds to save the Corrupted Gems. She finds out in this episode that Steven failed with the negotiations.

* RealityEnsues:
** Steven tries to swim to Beach City, only for the ocean's current to send him back to the island.
** A watermelon bird tries to fly, only to immediately fall because it's much too heavy for its wings to support it.
** Steven in the Watermelon form tries to verbally tell Bismuth and Greg that the Crystal Gems on Homeworld need help. But they don't understand his Watermelon gibberish and shrug their shoulders. They also can't understand his drawings. So he writes out a message instead -- "HELP! WE NEED BACKUP!" -- before his temporary body dries out.
** After the long day they had, Connie falls asleep while holding onto Steven.

* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Bismuth is befuddled when she sees a Watermelon Steven, because she was still in Lion's mane when Steven created them and when he learned that he could possess them.

* YouAreNotAlone:
** Steven remembers that there are still Crystal Gems on earth - Lion, Bismuth, Lapis, and Peridot. While Lapis and Peridot are still poofed, Bismuth isn't, and Lion is very much active.
** When the Watermelon Stevens realize that Steven is trying to build a raft, they happily help him out before sending him off.

* PowerIncontinence: Steven's original plan was to talk to Bismuth in the astral plane, as he previously did with Lapis. Naturally, he's extremely annoyed when he discovers he's possessed the body of a Watermelon Steven.

* GrumpyBear: Since time is of the essence, Steven has no interest in getting involved with the politics of the Watermelon Stevens, both groups essentially trying to indoctrinate him and being a general nuisance to him as he tries to get off the island.

** The Watermelon Stevens breaking into two fighting groups over having a star on their chest is quite reminiscent of ''Literature/TheSneetches''.

* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Steven thinks Greg would be ashamed at his son ending up "in jail".

* ShoutOut: The tower that Stevonnie gets locked in is very reminiscent in appearance to that of [[Disney/{{Tangled}} Rapunzel's]].

** Lion's connection to Steven comes in handy when Steven is stranded in the ocean and drying up rapidly.

* ContinuityNod:
** Peridot and Lapis are still poofed, showing not too much time has passed on Earth.
** Bismuth is helping repair the house, as she said she would do in "Reunited".

** Steven remembers that there are still Crystal Gems on earth - his dad, Lion, Bismuth, Lapis, and Peridot. While Lapis and Peridot are still poofed, Bismuth isn't, and his dad and Lion are very much active.

* DiegeticSwitch: Greg plays the intro to "Escapism" on his guitar. When he sees (watermelon) Steven, he stops playing, the music keeps playing over the muted dialogue, then the vocals kick in.

** The warp pad on Mask Island is still broken from Malachite and Alexandrite's battle; so at the very least, Steven can't use it.

* ItsAllMyFault: Steven blames himself for bringing everyone to Homeworld despite the fact that Connie was directly responsible for ruining everything. She reassures him that he was doing the best he could.

* {{Foil}}: Bismuth to Peridot when working with Greg. While Peridot pushed Greg off the barn roof to see if he could fly, while he was repairing it back in season 2, Bismuth is sawing up wood to help him repair the house and Temple. Justified in that Peridot didn't know humans were "fragile and soft", while Bismuth does, and Bismuths are made for construction work.
