Pearl explains her past with Pink Diamond.

to:

Pearl explains helps Sapphire get over her past anger at Rose for deceiving the Crystal Gems by explaining exactly how they came to be.

Way back when Pink Diamond had just got her wish for a colony of her own, she fairly quickly finds out that it's not all it's cracked up to be. Diamonds spend the entirety of the invasion in their moonbase, overseeing other gems
with only their pearls for company. Pink Diamond.finds this incredibly boring, and her Pearl's syncophantic nature annoying (and certainly not helpful). Pearl was made to make Pink Diamond happy, and she gets an idea about how to solve the problem. Diamonds can't casually interact with the lower classes; they're queens and above that. But Gems can shapeshift, and if Pink Diamond were to disguise herself as a Quartz, she could freely play with the Quartz gems being born down on the colony. Pink thinks this is a great idea, and quickly creates a Gemsona to cosplay- Rose Quartz.

Pink is happy to experience her colony firsthand, but this quickly fades. See, Pink Diamond, up on her moonbase, didn't understand how Kindergartens worked. When she realizes that they drain the surrounding area of all life, and if the colony were completed it would be no more than a rock, she balks. She desperately tries to stop the colony from being completed using her authority as a Diamond... but it turned out, she didn't have any. The instant she decided to stop doing things the traditional way, Blue and Yellow came down on her like a ton of bricks. No amount of wheedling, excuse-making, or outright begging would move them to grant her anything more than saving just a bit of Earth's life, in a zoo.

So Pink decided that if she wasn't going to be able to make any headway as herself, she'd start objecting as someone else, who the Diamonds would have to listen to. She formed a "rebel army" (actually just herself and Pearl), lead by the fearsome renegade Rose Quartz, who wished to drive the Diamonds away from Earth. But on her first attack against Blue Diamond, The Answer happened. Garnet's creation distracted Blue's court and gave her an opportunity to escape, but it also gave her something more to ponder.

Pink Diamond wasn't the only ill-fit in the Gem Empire. Cross-gem fusions, like Garnet, were taboo, and that accidental fusion would doom both of her components, until Sapphire paid Ruby back by helping her escape. With Garnet, Pink Diamond found a new purpose for the Crystal Gems; aiding the various Off-Colors who otherwise would be shattered just for being what they were, and giving them a home on Earth. With Garnet as the first real member, the Crystal Gems became a true revolutionary army, and Rose Quartz's rebellion grew into a war.

Pink also gained a new side to her relationship with her Pearl, who had begun to honestly imagine things and see herself as a person. They weren't quite able to work a Fusion, but they got close.

Eventually, the war would grow to the level that would make Pink believe that the only way to end it was to destroy the symbol of the Diamonds' power on earth- Pink herself. She would, with her Pearl's help, fake her death and assume her Rose Quartz identity full-time. The Diamonds would be defeated, but at a horrible cost as they'd unleash the Corruption Song on every Gem on Earth, leaving only Garnet, Pearl, and Rose herself. But that's part of the story you've already heard.
