The USS Discovery crash lands on an unfamiliar planet, into a morass of "parasitic ice". The crew suffer various degrees of injury, and struggle to make repairs to the ship. They have no idea if Commander Burnham made it through.

Attracted by all the dilithium aboard Discovery, Zareh shows up, intending to take all the dilithium by force. Saru tries to negotiate an agreement beneficial to all, but Zareh doesn't really care. Zareh kills one of the townsfolk and threatens to kill Tilly.

Grateful, the townsfolk give Saru what he needs to complete repairs to Discovery. Unfortunately, the sun has set and it looks like the "parasitic ice" will crush the ship before it can break free. Fortunately, some ship shows up and lifts Discovery out of the ice with a tractor beam.

Burnham has shown up to rescue them. She had been looking for Discovery for a year.

After the ''Discovery'' crash-lands on a strange planet in a strange future, the crew finds themselves racing against time to repair their ship. Meanwhile, Saru and Tilly embark on a perilous first-contact mission in hopes of finding Burnham.

* TheNicknamer: Reno dubs the Ensign shoveling up Leland's remains "Ensign Hazmat", and ignores him when he tells her his actual name. She also dubs Stamets "bobcat", and when questioned about it, simply says "I don't know, I'm on drugs."

* PlotHole: During the first part of the finale last season, ''Discovery'' was left with a skeleton crew consisting of: the characters in the credits (Burnham, Saru, Tilly, Stamets), the bridge crew (Rhys, Bryce, Owosekun, Detmer, Nilsson) and the special guest stars (Nhan, Georgiou, Reno, Culber and Spock, who [[ForegoneConclusion didn't end up staying aboard]]). During this episode, Tilly claims there are 88 people back on board. This explains how Dr. Pollard and Linus the Saurian are still aboard, but does not explain why.

** Zareh quickly deduces that ''Discovery'' is from the past based on the readings he detected, their antiquated tech, and Saru's attitude.

* VillainHasAPoint: Georgiou's Terran mindset leads her to believe any reception to their landing won't be a welcome one, while Saru is more inclined to act diplomatically. She ends up being half-right when the locals turn out to be helpful while the one extorting them is not, and her intervention is the only reason things end well for Saru and Tilly.

* SingleBiomePlanet: Reno guesses that they're on the wrong planet based on the fact that "Terralysium wasn't particularly icy."
