The Crystal Heart is destroyed, and now nothing can stop the winter storms from burying the Crystal Empire. Princesses Celestia and Luna fly out to delay the weather as long as they can, while Applejack, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash attempt to shoo the gathered citizens back to their homes without inciting a panic. Everypony else flees to the castle library in search of a spell that will restore the Crystal Heart, trying to keep tabs on the newborn alicorn (who continues to fly around quickly, teleport, and blast laser beams) all the while. Meanwhile, Starlight Glimmer decides her old friendship with Sunburst cannot be rekindled, and leaves dejectedly without revealing her past. Spike reassures Starlight that she still has their friendship, but she feels that she has failed her first lesson.

Starlight Glimmer appeals to her old friend for help, only to learn ''his'' secret: he's not an important wizard, or even a wizard at all. He knew everything ''about'' any spell in the book, but he seldom had the power to actually cast them. Shamed, he left Celestia's school for magic and settled in the Crystal Empire where no one knew him. Starlight to comes clean about her past: that she used her own magical power for dark purposes and nearly destroyed Equestria as a result. The two of them finally apologize to each other, and begin to work out their differences.

Twilight's attempts to reconstruct the Crystal Heart go nowhere, since the spell by itself won't work on a relic so powerful, even with her and Cadance casting it together. Fortunately, Sunburst has arrived. With his knowledge of magic, he explains that only a certain combination of spells can restore an object like the Crystal Heart: the Crystalling itself, a second spell to calm the weather, and "Fledgling's Forbearance" to get the infant's incredible powers under control. Celestia, Luna, Twilight, and Starlight turn their magic on the Heart as Shining Armor and Cadance complete the Crystalling ceremony with their new baby. Sunburst plays the pivotal role of the Crystaller, adding a key fragment of crystal to complete the Heart. When all is done, the Heart becomes complete once more and quickly restores the barrier, shoving back the winter clouds.

* {{Denouement}}: Starlight Glimmer faces her fears, comes to grips with her past and rekindles her friendship with Sunburst, completing her first friendship lesson and effectively closing the chapter on her darkness.

* WeakButSkilled: Sunburst turns out to be very knowledgeable about magic and spells, but without the raw talent and power that Twilight and Starlight have that would actually allow him to ''do'' a lot of those spells at their level, if at all. Besides the Crystalling spell, the most complex thing he's seen doing is unicorn telekinesis. Celestia takes note of this as she recognizes him as a former student from her School for Gifted Unicorns.

** Spike manages to convince Starlight that even if she's Twilight's student, she's not a failure for not learning the lessons so quickly and encourages her to keep trying to reconcile with Sunburst.
** Starlight manages to convince Sunburst he still has the magical talent within him and can still make a difference. And in the end, he's the one that comes up with a plan to fix the Crystal Heart and re-powering the final piece to save the day.
** At the end Spike reassures Twilight she's a good teacher and that letting your students have some space to learn on their own is part of the process of being a mentor.

* RealityEnsues: The raging snowstorm outside of the Crystal Empire [[PaintingTheFrostOnWindows cannot be controlled]] or stopped by the ponies. They can only take precautions and protect themselves from it, and if they ''can't'', then they'd better get out of there or else. Just like real life natural disasters.

** Sunburst was shipped off due to his apparent great magical talent, which caused Starlight's descent into villainy until she was talked out of it by Twilight. When Starlight finally meets up with him again, it turns out his talent is average despite earning a cutie mark from it, further proving her old philosophy wrong.

Princesses Celestia and Luna head out into the storm to attempt to keep the clouds at bay, while Applejack, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash attempt to make the crowd gathered for the Crystalling leave without inciting a panic. Everypony else searches for a spell to undo the damage in the castle's library. All the while, Shining Armor and Cadance attempt to keep tabs on their baby, who continues to fly around quickly, teleport, and blast laser beams. Meanwhile, Starlight Glimmer's attempts to rekindle her friendship with Sunburst ultimately go nowhere, each one of them hesitant to speak to the other. A dejected Starlight finally leaves Sunburst to himself with his important wizard work, convinced that she's failed Twilight's lesson, though Spike reassures Starlight that she still has him and Twilight for support.

Although Twilight finally finds a spell of relic reconstitution in an old tome, an errant laser blast being deflected by the various assembled ponies destroys it. Twilight tries remembering the spell she'd just read only once, while Starlight, after being informed of the situation, leaves to try and get Sunburst's help. Shining Armor and Cadance see that, even with Celestia and Luna fighting it off, the storm is becoming too intense, and call off the Crystalling, intending to get everypony in the city to evacuate to the train station. When Starlight returns to Sunburst's house, she tries to get him to help, but Sunburst insists he's too busy. Finally, after being pressured, Sunburst admits that he's not an important wizard as Starlight believes; in fact, he's not even a wizard at all.

Sunburst explains that, despite being very knowledgeable about the spells themselves, he had trouble casting all of them, saying that Starlight doesn't know what it's like to have such a regret on his mind. Starlight angrily counters that she does, having nearly destroyed Equestria because of her attempts at changing time. The two of them finally apologize to each other, and begin to work out their differences. Still, the storm rages outside, forcing Starlight to try and have Sunburst evacuate the Empire since the Crystalling is being cancelled. Upon hearing about the "Crystalling," Sunburst has an idea, grabbing several tomes from his shelf. As the ponies attempt to reach the train station, Celestia and Luna included as they've given up on holding back the storm, they meet up with Starlight and Sunburst, who tell them that they have to go back to the castle. Recognizing Sunburst as a former student from her school, Celestia allows it.

The princesses, sans Cadance, and Starlight, cast the spells on the Heart as Shining Armor and Cadance complete the Crystalling ceremony with their new baby, Sunburst using the fragment of crystal to restore the Crystal Heart to its full power, and one piece again, putting the storm's barrier back and dispelling the winter clouds.

* AllPartOfTheShow: Flurry Heart's horn blasts out of the castle is believed to be fireworks to celebrate Flurry Heart's Crystalling.

** While the Mane Six regain their Crystal pony appearances from "The Crystal Empire - Part 2" as well, this is the first time Celestia and Luna get to experience it as they had remained in Canterlot when it happened the first time in case King Sombra regained power. For them, it was just getting the crystal coating and matching eyes, not much else.

* EasilyForgiven: Sunburst took it surprisingly well that Starlight stole ponies' cutie marks and attempted to destroy Equestria's history.

* EncyclopaedicKnowledge: Though Sunburst's own magic isn't any greater than the average unicorn's, his ''knowledge'' of magic is superior to that of any of the Princesses. He even recognized at a glance Twilight's reconstruction of the Spell of Relic Reconstitution.

* PhotographicMemory: Twilight reconstructs the Spell of Relic Reconstitution after ''glancing'' through it once, which is lampshaded by her friends when she doubts her ability to do so. Sunburst, who reads through Twilight's reconstruction, seems to concur that she was accurate. The only reason why it failed is because an ancient and powerful relic like the Crystal Heart, which has been around for millennia, including the early years of Equestria when Celestia and Luna took the throne, required more than just another spell to fix it.

This basically meant that if they could not restore the Crystal Heart and stop the storm, they'd have to evacuate the Crystal Empire, or risk Equestria becoming leaderless/defenseless without the Royal Family or the Elements of Harmony bearers to protect it.
