Rory and Lorelai are planning to backpack through Europe for the summer. Luke tells them he and Nicole are going on a cruise. Lorelai suggests that he propose during the trip.

During a town meeting Taylor thinks they should kill all the roaming deer in the area because they invade his garden. Everone else thinks it sounds barbaric to kill the little Bambis. After the meeting Rory talks to Dean and tells him to get the photographer at his wedding to take candid photos so that not all their memories of the day are stiff and posed. He thanks her for the advice and she gives him a catalogue and tells him to pick out a wedding present for him and his future wife that Rory can give them. Dean says she didn't have to do this and Rory replies that that's why it's fun.

The Independence inn isn't going so well after the fire. They only have one guest. The owner ends up shutting it down and Lorelai heads over to Sookie and Jackson to announce that they have no jobs, that she can't pay her share in the Dragonfly inn because Rory didn't get any scholarships so now she has to put up the money for her, and concludes that life is now open. When Rory learns of this she goes behind her mother's back to ask her grandparents to pay for Yale, which they agree to in exchange for more Friday night dinners with Rory.

When Rory tells Lorelai this on graduation day she calls it "no strings attached" except that she has to pay them back in installments after she graduates Yale and come to dinner every Friday. Lorelai points out that those are strings, but informs Sookie that she now has the money so they can bid on the Dragonfly.

At the graduation Brad sings a song to express his fondness for his fellow students. Rory gives the Valedictorian speech in which she says that for all the admirable women she had been influenced by, the person she wished to resemble the most was always her own mother. Lorelai and Sookie cry at this, but Jackson and Luke cry even harder. After the graduation Emily and Richard give Rory a car. Jess calls Rory and hangs up, then calls her again and listens to her say that she may have loved him, but that she is moving on.

Lorelai suggests they carve their names somewhere inside the school building. Rory objects to the vandalism, but suggests they carve their initials reversed in tiny letters on the bottom of a wall. Lorelai gives up on the idea, but points out that the building isn't so scary anymore.

Luke has a dream that Lorelai tells him not to ask Nicole to marry him.
