* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The original idea for the episode saw Angel and Spike fly out to England to see Giles, as Joss needed someone whom Angel considered credible to give the bad news. The limited budget prevented them from flying in Anthony Stewart Head for a cameo, though (ironically, from England).
** Joss had planned for Fred to return in season 6, fighting Illyria for control of her body. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled, and so Fred remains dead and even, as we learn in the next episode, deprived of an afterlife, which comes off as quite pointlessly cruel if you don't know the behind the scenes story.

* WhatIsOneMansLifeInComparison: Angel and Spike discover that they ''can'' save Fred by drawing Illyria's sarcophagus back to the Deeper Well... but since Illyria's essence has been freed, it will essentially become a mystical airborne virus and infect thousands of innocents (everyone between the Cotswolds and Los Angeles, according to Drogyn), killing them all. As much as they love Fred, Angel and Spike just can't let such a horrible thing happen, and are thus forced to let Fred die.
