What part of the times; that was almost depressing world could audiences credibly believe would allow itself to be taken over and isolated by a charismatic psycho with inexplicable legions of mindless followers, and which, furthermore, has a greater density of firearms than it has effective social services? Hmm, I wonder. 'Thank you, Yahtz. I think everyone's gotten the joke.' Oh, hello, rural America! Didn't see you there, hiding under Canada's frilly miniskirt! [[AC: Literature (Non-Fiction)]]
->"One did not expect such [[Film/ThePassionOfTheChrist a film]] to come to American screens in the first decade of the third millennium...The extent to which the film freely, perhaps unselfconciously, but pervasively borrows the most explicit stereotypes of antisemitic representation is nothing short of extraordinary. Indeed, there is so much of this representation that it may have escaped the eyes of some reviewers and critics. But they may also simply be ignorant. After all, antisemitic cinema is not the regular fare of film critics these days...But it does not take a genius, nor even a historian of cinema or of antisemitism, to recognize that ''The Passion of the Christ'' is based on two basic models of representing Jews.\\
\\
The first model is that of medieval Christianity and its interpretation of the story of the Crucifixion. This version, according to which the Jews were directly responsible for the torture and assassination of God, was of course at the root of much of the antisemitic violence that characterized Europe for centuries...But Gibson's personal beliefs and interpretations of the Gospels should be of little interest to us. What matters is the manner in which they mold the film...At this point the second model kicks in....Gibson's characters are directly lifted from the antisemtic cinematic imagination, one of whose most powerful and influential representatives was ''Jew Süss'', brought to German screens in 1940, at the height of Hitler's power and on the eve of the Final Solution...The geatures of the actors playing malevolent Jews are exaggerated through makeup, lighting, and angle of photography. They sway and gesture and whine and argue just as Jews would in the antisemitic imagination; they are, of course, caricatures, physically repulsive and morally corrupt. Even Satan (Rosalinda Celentano) is a much more attractive figure than these spiteful creeps. One would need to make a single change in their manner of speech, body language, or physical features to paste them into any scene from ''Jew Süss''.
