If you don't have their permission, it could be considered ''physical assault''; a common motto of convention conduct policies is "Cosplay is not Consent." Even if you ''do'' ask before glomping, your or the subject might underestimate the force of your tackle-hug and at least one of you could end up with bruises, damaged costumes (cosplay is known for being expensive and/or delicate), broken ribs, or other sorts of nasty injuries, especially if there is a significant difference in weight and muscle power between the both of you. As a result, many {{Fan Convention}}s, where attendees have been known to glomp others, have outright banned the practice.

Suffice to say, he doesn't get glomped very often anymore.
* A fan once did this to Creator/GregAyres at the top of a flight of stairs while his back was turned, causing both to tumble down the stairs. Is it any wonder cons are cracking down on these?
* During an episode of ''Voiceprint with Creator/TrevorDevall and Guests'' interviewing Creator/ScottMcNeil, Scott admitted to being afraid of the very word, having once had his back injured in a glomping incident.

* Glomping used to be a popular thing to do in anime conventions but has since fallen out of favor with the anime community due to instances of cosplays being damaged, people getting injured, and just the general idea of invading a stranger's personal space by surprise hugging them becoming frowned upon.

Kirby looks utterly confused the entire time, even as he leaves a tiny skidmark from Dedede hauling him off.
* ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfHeroesTrailsOfColdSteelII'': GenkiGirl Millium Orion. She's a great fan of this maneuver, with Claire, Rean, and Jusis often at the receiving end.
* ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'': The "GORON HUG!" scene has the Gorons try to do this ''en masse'' to Link, who responds to this like any rational person would -- by screaming and fleeing in terror.

* In the 'Subspace Emissary' campaign of ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosBrawl'', Kirby is subjected to one of these by King Dedede when they reunite outside of the Great Maze, right after watching Bowser rough up Ganondorf's trophy.

* ''WesternAnimation/{{Arcane}}''. In The Boy Savior", Vi is captured by Ekko after he's grown up and become the leader of the Firelights. Their initial terse discussion becomes heartwarming when she suddenly hugs him, to Ekko's shock as [[SlippedTheRopes Vi was supposed to be chained up at the time.]]

* ''Manga/FruitsBasket'': [[OlderThanTheyLook Momiji]] glomps Tohru ''twice'', even though it makes him [[InvoluntaryTransformation transform]]. She returns the favor with a little less velocity.

* At the end of ''Film/{{Armageddon}}'', a stripper that Rockhound mentioned dropping a hundred grand on (which he is afraid he will be unable to pay back) by the name of Molly Mounds greets Rockhound on the tarmac after the survivors get home and hugs him so enthusiastically that they are both knocked to the ground.

A glomper is often the CuddleBug. See also NoSenseOfPersonalSpace, which glompers often exhibit. If the glomper is frightened, it's a SecurityCling. If the glomper is genuinely ''[[PersonalSpaceInvader attacking]],'' it's a DeadlyLunge or AttackHello. In Real Life, it can turn into a DeadlyLunge regardless of the glomper's intent, especially if the glompee is much smaller, possessed of a medical condition, or just [[HatesBeingTouched doesn't like being touched]].

* ''Series/ThePunisher2017''. In "Two Dead Men", Frank Castle makes contact with [[IntrepidReporter Karen Page]] for information, the first time they've met since the events of ''Series/Daredevil2015'' Season 2. It's implied Karen is still in mourning for Matt Murdock (who [[NotQuiteDead supposedly died]] during the events of ''Series/TheDefenders''), so as Frank is leaving she spontaneously hugs him.

* ''LightNovel/ReignOfTheSevenSpellblades'': Oliver is on the receiving end in volume 4 after Nanao gets drunk off a restaurant drink that turned out to be a lot stronger than expected. Unfortunately, Oliver is still having symptoms from a prior antagonist's SexMagic, and the close contact with his LoveInterest sends him running for the bathroom to cool off.

** In the ''Anime/MyOtome'' manga, Natsuki often gets this from her younger sister, Alyssa, and once gets it from her mother, Saeko.

* ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' has a bizarre and dark example- for whatever reason, this was the visible sound effect when Dabi ||tried to burn himself and Shoto to death|| with what can only be described as a violent hug.
