* ''Manga/ChainsawMan'': A CentralTheme. The whole series deals with uncomfortable or even heartbreaking truths that various characters ultimately wish they never learned. Denji's entire arc is him having various new experiences, some of which he had been hoping for, and growing wiser but otherwise less happy due to many of them being letdowns. Many characters are given a LeaveYourQuestTest, a chance to bail out before anything worse happens to them, only for them to fail to accept and fall deeper into despair the more they advanced the plot and the more they learn, [[spoiler:like Aki discovering that his revenge quest was AllForNothing as the target of his hatred, the Gun Devil, had long been defeated. Makima plans to take this further by sending Chainsaw after Devils like Death, War, Hunger, and even herself to bring about a happier world where nobody remembers that they ever existed.

So, the hero has found the giant factory belonging to the BigBad. He enters with his TrueCompanions and finds weapons that could kill thousands or maybe even millions, all built by and being built by the locals. While the hero believes that the locals all knew about the Big Bad's plan and were helping him willingly, a few questions from TheHeart clears up the matter -- the locals simply think the weapons are harmless machinery that will be used for building houses and/or farming.

This trope describes situations where somebody uses someone to make or do something by lying about what exactly it is that they're doing, or assuring them that it's for the greater good. It could be something as simple as stealing plans or moving an item to another location, or something major, like building a DoomsdayDevice or breaching a boundary -- if the BigBad plays on their ignorance to make them do something; it's this. This can often result in a HeelFaceTurn or MyGodWhatHaveIDone. See also EvilPlan, NiceJobBreakingItHero, AwfulTruth, RedemptionEqualsDeath and AmbiguousInnocence. Characters made of Ignorance Is Bliss include the NobleSavage.

Compare DumbIsGood. Not to be confused with WhileRomeBurns, when everything is going horribly wrong but everyone responds to it with denial.

something. This trope describes situations where is about being happier or better-off not knowing the truth--of any sort, from the AwfulTruth to the TownWithADarkSecret. It can play out in a few ways:
* Somebody is given the choice to learn the truth and decides to decline it, stating they'd be happier not finding out
* Somebody has a choice of notifying another character of the truth but decides not to, believing the other person is better off not knowing
* Somebody learns the truth and regrets it, citing this trope. Or
somebody uses learns the truth, and consequences/the effects it has on them are clearly framed as a bad thing by the narrative

This can be the reason a party responsible for TheMasquerade decides to uphold it: TheWorldIsNotReady, and there'd be less turmoil if no one knows. It's sometimes also the reason a character keeps a SecretIdentity, believing that keeping loved ones in the dark will cause them less grief and trouble. When
someone trying to make or do this decision for another is conflicted about it, they learn that KeepingSecretsSucks. Can overlap with TheyreCalledPersonalIssuesForAReason, if the person isn't just worried about the wellbeing of someone else.

Often part of someone's ForHappiness motive.

BrainBleach is a stronger, usually more humorous, version of learning
something by lying the learner wishes they didn't. See also TheseAreThingsManWasNotMeantToKnow, when the trope is applied to a thing that cannot be observed or learned about what exactly it without dire consequences to humanity.

The phrase "ignorance
is that they're doing, or assuring them that it's for bliss" was coined by poet Thomas Gray. In the greater good. It could be something as simple as stealing plans or moving an item to another location, or something major, like building a DoomsdayDevice or breaching a boundary -- if poem, the BigBad plays on their line is usually written as: "Where ignorance to make them do something; it's this. This can often result in a HeelFaceTurn or MyGodWhatHaveIDone. See also EvilPlan, NiceJobBreakingItHero, AwfulTruth, RedemptionEqualsDeath and AmbiguousInnocence. Just thought that I would add a bit more context to this example! I have to say though, I'm surprised by the trope description- I thought that this trope described when a hero lets allies or bystanders believe a lie that's easier than the truth.

Added DiffLines:

** Unfortunately, this example ended up [[SubvertedTrope subverted]] in short order. What Trip [[DidntThinkThisThrough failed to consider]] is that Goh's ''ChildhoodFriend'' had just vanished without a trace, and Goh had already [[HeroicRROD worked himself sick]] trying to find her. Moreover, Trip's reasoning for this belief edges on InsaneTrollLogic. As a Train veteran, he should have known that the EpiphanicPrison doesn't appear to people who ''want'' to find it. It appears to people in emotional turmoil- such as, for example, ''a ten year old boy'' whose friend has just disappeared and [[LockedOutoftheLoop left no sign of where she went, or even if she was still alive]].

there is some major title/definition dissonance here; all of these examples are about "happier because not knowing" and not the trope's actual definition of "making people do a thing by lying/hiding what the thing is"

* In ''Manga/BlackButler'', Ciel tells Snake that his missing friends' whereabouts were unknown and that staying with Ciel is the fastest way to see them again. [[spoiler:The reader knows that they were all killed by Ciel's staff when they attempted to ambush the mansion.]]

* A major theme of the story of ''Manga/TheGodsLie''. Natsuru was able to have a blissful time with Rio before finding out about [[spoiler:her grandfather being [[DisposingOfABody buried]] in the backyard]], and Rio was able to stoically wait things out with Yuta before finding out that [[spoiler:her father was ''not'' on a fishing trip and had simply abandoned them]]. This is the basis of the Title Drop at the end: sometimes the gods lie in order to keep humans happy.

* In ''Fanfic/ADovahkiinSpreadsHisWings'', Ned Stark thinks that Ignorance equals bliss equals safety, and as such [[LiesToChildren lies to his children]] and willingly keeps quiet about "dangerous" information. Yes, the Stark children grow happy and safe, but the deconstruction hits ''hard'': Sansa is so naive she's easily manipulated by unsavory people such as Cersei Lannister, while Jon lost trust in Ned for not giving him the tools to protect himself and became estranged from him.

* Thanos in ''Film/AvengersInfinityWar'' expresses this sentiment at least once.
-->'''Thanos:''' You're not the only one cursed with knowledge.
* ''Film/DiamondsAreForever'': Blofeld kidnaps Willard Whyte and uses his industrial empire to build and launch a Kill Sat. Only one other person in Whyte's organization knows what's going on: the rest are kept ignorant.
** Also in ''Film/DiamondsAreForever'', we have a rocket scientist who helped Blofeld to build the KillSat because he thought Blofeld would use it to help achieve world peace. Of course, this wasn't the case.

* Cypher in ''Film/TheMatrix'' decides to betray Morpheus to the Agents. "Ignorance is bliss" is what he uses to justify it when he meets with Agent Smith:
-->'''Agent Smith''': ''[He and Cypher are eating at a fancy restaurant]'' Do we have a deal, Mr. Reagan?
-->'''Cypher''': ''[cuts a piece of steak and holds it in front of him]'' You know, I know this steak doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize? ''[Eats the piece of steak and sighs contently]'' Ignorance is ''bliss''.
-->'''Agent Smith''': Then we have a deal?
--> '''Cypher''': I don't wanna remember nothing. ''Nothing'', you understand? And I want to be rich. You know, someone important … like an actor.
-->'''Agent Smith''': Whatever you want, Mr. Reagan.
-->'''Cypher''': Okay. I get my body back into a power plant, re-insert me into the Matrix, I'll get you what you want.
-->'''Agent Smith''': Access codes to the Zion mainframe.
-->'''Cypher''': No, I told you, I don't know them. I can get you the man who does.
-->'''Agent Smith''': Morpheus.
* This, combined with the fact that TheWorldIsAlwaysDoomed, is why the ''Film/MenInBlack'' go to such lengths to keep up TheMasquerade.
* Used in ''Film/CabinFever'' when the busty brunette [[CoitusEnsues suddenly offers herself to the lone surviving hero.]] She has the killer [[AntagonistTitle fever]], though she isn't showing any signs yet. Midway through sex, the guy tells her he's worried that they aren't using a condom. So the woman assures him that she's perfectly healthy, because by that point, the only thing that telling the truth could do is spoil their fun.
* In ''Film/CafeSetareh'', Ebi feels that Fariba and her mother would be better off not knowing that [[spoiler: Khosro is dead]], so he burns all the newspapers that would tell them.

* In George Orwell's classic dystopia ''Literature/NineteenEightyFour'', the last of three core slogans that the Party propagates to the citizens of Oceania is "Ignorance Is Strength". (The other two being "War Is Peace" and "Freedom Is Slavery")

* ''Literature/TheLostFleet: Outlands: Boundless'' When Dr. Bron realizes that any warnings about the potential hypernet gate collapse won't give the people of Midway or the Alliance fleet time to evacuate, he despairingly wonders if they should even bother broadcasting a warning and filling everyone's last few minutes with terror.
* In ''Literature/{{Pact}}'', ignorance keeps the vast majority of humans safe from the supernatural by maintaining the {{Masquerade}}. As almost all supernatural creatures have been forced over the centuries to swear to abide by the Standard of Solomon, which prevents them from attacking the innocent without cause, this has allowed humanity to expand to its current levels of population, to the point that they reproduce faster than the Others can kill them, Others are steadily being driven from their hiding places by ignorant humans against whom they can't fight back, and those few that ''can'' are dealt with by the few humans that know the truth.

* ''Series/{{House}}'' had an episode called "Ignorance Is Bliss" where it turned out that [[spoiler:the Patient of the Week (who was a genius) was regularly taking cough medicine so he would be around the same intelligence level as his girlfriend]].
* The Dark Curse in ''Series/OnceUponATime'' exiled characters from a fairy tale world into the real world with new memories. Considering nearly all of them have ridiculously tragic back stories, sometimes not knowing is a blessing. As Ruby puts it:
-->'''Ruby/Red Riding Hood''': Regina thought she was punishing us by erasing who we were. She underestimated just how much crap we wanted to forget.

* The fourth season finale of ''Series/TheVampireDiaries'' has Bonnie bringing Jeremy back to life but then staying in the afterlife herself to "balance the scales." Jeremy decides to keep this quiet and let everyone think that Bonnie is vacationing in Europe, complete with faking text messages from her. Bonnie's spirit pushes him to continue this as she thinks knowing of her death will ruin everyone's good spirits. It's when Damon presses Jeremy to call up Bonnie as they need her help on a spell for Jeremy to finally confess the truth. As it happens, Damon's reaction is to be more furious on the fact that had the two just come clean earlier, they could have found a way to bring Bonnie back to life faster.
* ''Series/AlteredCarbon'': It turns out that Laurens Bancroft [[spoiler:really did kill himself. He [[DisposableSexWorker murdered a prostitute]] while violently raping her (not just her current body; he smashed her stack too) and caused another one to run away and jump to her death. He felt so ashamed that he shot himself, knowing that he would simply wake up in a new body with no memory of his actions.]]

* In ''VideoGame/AliceMadnessReturns'', the loading screen may give this piece of advice: "Ignorance is bliss, except when it's fatal."
** This turns out to be central to the plot. [[spoiler:Dr. Bumby wants to take away Alice's memories so that he can pimp her out like he's done to other girls]].
* ''Franchise/{{Persona}}'':
** The motivation behind [[spoiler:Ryoji asking you to kill him]] in ''VideoGame/{{Persona 3}}''. Nyx is coming to destroy the world, and it's generally believed that there's no way to stop it. [[spoiler:Killing Ryoji]] will eliminate [[TheHiddenHour the Dark Hour]] and erase any associated memories, leaving the world to live out what's left of its life in peace.
** One of the main themes of ''VideoGame/{{Persona 4}}'' is about how humans desire a peaceful lie instead of accepting any harsh truths. Major turning points are centered around the cast rejecting the lies, which eventually clears the supernatural fog plaguing the town.
* Played in a ''far'' darker variant in ''VideoGame/ShinMegamiTenseiIV''. [[spoiler:The Archangels' idea of a peaceful, harmonious Mikado is one where literacy, education, and worship or even mere admiration of anyone besides God doesn't exist. You help achieve this in the Law ending.]]
* Referenced in ''VideoGame/PlanescapeTorment'', when Morte tells a story about a man who suddenly finds himself with no memories at all. An old hag appears before him and asks him for his third wish, and he replies that he hasn't had a first or second wish yet. The hag tells him that his second wish was to undo his first wish, which is why he doesn't remember making any wishes. The man, though clearly skeptical, nevertheless wishes to remember who he is. The hag bursts out laughing and grants his wish before disappearing forever. "Funny... that was your ''first'' wish."
* ''VideoGame/{{RuneScape}}'' has this in the quests "Priest in Peril" and "Devious Minds".

* In ''VideoGame/StarControl2'', ignorance is not only bliss, but armor. The Arilou hint at a malicious presence from [[EldritchLocation Beyond]], but refuse to elaborate further when asked, claiming that ignorance is the best protection against Them, as They can not see mankind unless mankind show themselves.
-->'''Arilou''': They have names, but you do not know them. They would like to find you, but they cannot see you, unless you show yourselves. In a way, ignorance is your best protection. If I tell you more, you will be able to look where you could never look before, and while looking you can and will be seen. ''You do not want to be seen.''
* ''VideoGame/CloseYourEyes'' implies this by the storyline and its multiple endings, especially the "Best Ending", where the [[spoiler: V.I.E.W facility self-destructs, killing Cecily, the Witch, and the Husks]] and the subtitle being, [[spoiler: ''"Everyone closed their eyes"'']].
* In ''VideoGame/CrusaderKingsIII'', if you have good relations with your vassals and you're confident there's nobody literally trying to kill you or those you care about, sometimes it's for the best to ''not'' have your spymasters search for schemes at your court. A smoothly running court will still have courtiers having romantic affairs, harboring doubts about their religion, dabbling in harmless witchcraft, and the like, but dredging these petty misdeeds up is simply not worth the drama it causes.
