The stylized heart shape, '''♥''' (or <3 as an emoticon), is a classic visual metaphor. It has long been used in Western animation and comics to symbolize a romantic crush. Or anything [[HeartsAreHealth health-related]] in VideoGames, which may also relate to HeartContainer as well. A HeartSymbol is also usually used for love, which would be CardiovascularLove, which is also the symbol's primary use in SayItWithHearts and as a type of WingdingEyes.

If the symbol's associated with a villain, it's a WickedHeartSymbol.

When it's used as part of the symbols for an attack, it's HeartBeatDown, which may also be CardiovascularLove, if the hearts represent love/lust/attraction, and possibly beauty, instead of innocence.

A HeartSymbol is typically drawn floating near a character's head, or on WingdingEyes, or nearly bursting out of a character's chest where the actual organ should be. Possibly a DiscreditedTrope, as subversions, deconstructions and parodies seem more common than playing it straight these days.

Traditionally pronounced "love," as in "I love New York" for "I '''♥''' NY," though recent convention has been to actually pronounce the symbol as "heart" - for example, the film ''IHeartHuckabees''. This is turn has led to the Internet {{meme|ticMutation}} of typing "I less-than-three X," in reference to the mathematical meaning of "<3".
