Inspired by the manifesto of German Philosopher Creator/KarlMarx, Communism evolved and became a very popular social, economic and political movement in the East, most famously Russia. The hammer and sickle were meant to represent the working class, the hammer representing the industrial worker, while the sickle represented the farming class, toiling in the fields.
In fiction, the hammer and sickle are a popular, DualWielding weapons-of-choice for your TokenMinority Russian character, be they DirtyCommunists, ChummyCommies or some other third flavor of communist.
