Usually a FusionDance is between two or more people who often don't have any connections other than [[RomanticFusion romance]] or [[SiblingFusion a familial relationship]]. However, there are instances where characters who are technically the same person merge together. This can involve clones, [[AlternateSelf alternate universe selves]], different variations from other timelines, or even someone who has been transformed into a doppelganger of another person.
How this happens may vary:
* Having two or more versions of the same person in one place causes them to merge against their will as a rule of the setting. This is usually a result of NeverTheSelvesShallMeet or OnlyOneMeAllowedRightNow.
* One of the variants wants to merge with one or more of their doppelgangers as part of some plan, perhaps an AssimilationPlot.
* The doppelgangers all agree to fuse together to defeat a bigger threat.
* A clone merges with their progenitor and/or other clones so they can become one being with their collective knowledge, powers and skills. This may be a way to avoid an ExpendableClone.
* The individuals were originally one being who was [[LiteralSplitPersonality split]] or [[SplitAtBirth reincarnated]] into more than one person and need to be reunited.
Compare SplitPersonalityMerge in which multiple personalities within one individual merge into one. This trope can also overlap with SiblingFusion if the siblings turn out to be one single individual split into two. If the fusion is made up different timeline variants, this may result in a version of RippleEffectProofMemory where a character is capable of simultaneously remembering multiple timelines that existed at some point.
