* Torso-mounted weapons are commonplace in TabletopGame/BattleTech. Arm-mounted ones enjoy wider firing arcs for obvious reasons (though not as much wider as one might think since the torso itself can be twisted sideways to some extent), but the side torsos in particular have more free room to actually install equipment in. No mech does it to quite the same extent as the Fafnir, which mounts *two* 18 ton Heavy Gauss Rifles, one on each side of its chest.

** Torso weapons also have the advantage that the torso (or the central piece anyway) is usually the last piece of a 'mech to go before the 'mech is put out of action (barring lucky shots to the head or legs). So-called "zombie 'mechs" commonly mount energy weapons in their center torso, allowing them to keep firing even as they're reduced to nothing but a torso on legs.

Practically speaking, the chest is a pretty bad place to mount a weapon. It would make more sense to put it on the arm, or pretty much anywhere where it could be aimed in a direction other than where the user is facing. Really, this trope only exists for two reasons: 1) so the user can kill you while flexing, and 2) because the beam appears to be emanating from the heart, implying that their desire to kill you comes from their very soul.
