* Played more realistically in ''Series/{{Leverage}}'', in the episode in which Parker pretends to be a candy striper to get close to a patient. She wears an unflattering pinafore rather than the sexy version of the outfit, and her role seems limited to offering books to read and listening to stories.

* A big reason why hospitals don't have these kinds of programs anymore is that insurance companies and managed care have shortened and sometimes eliminated hospital stays for many kinds of surgeries, procedures and conditions. For instance, many less invasive forms of surgery are done on a strictly outpatient basis. What this means is that hospitals have an overall sicker class of patients nowadays than in the past, and that means that having untrained, unpaid kids doing things for them might not be the safest idea. To a certain extent, these programs have been replaced by volunteer programs in nursing homes and inpatient rehab centers, where the patients and residents are less medically fragile and may appreciate visits from young people. Also, for-profit hospitals could be viewed as exploiting unpaid labour so as to turn an even bigger profit.
