** Studies done on rats have shown, in fact, that the sweeteners used in diet sodas cause a spike in insulin levels, which causes more calories to be stored in the cells, including fat cells. Because insulin eats blood sugar, this also causes temporary hypoglycemia, which will lead to a craving for sugary food to restore the balance. Hence, the overall effect of diet soda is a tendency toward weight gain, not loss.

* Sugary drinks by themselves aren't really fattening. People who drink a lot of sugary drinks tend to have bad eating habits all around. The sugary drinks are a contribution, but not the main problem.
* The term "diet" is a misnomer for marketing purposes. Diet sodas by themselves do not counteract fat or weight gain. "Sugar-free" is more appropriate, but not sexy enough.
* Diet sodas are incredibly helpful for those with diabetes and also those who are prone to heartburn. Both of those groups can actually eat most things at a fast food restaurant - it's just the sugary drink that is most likely to set them off.
* [[NineOutOfTenDoctorsAgree Most dentists agree]] that diet sodas are much easier on your teeth if you're intending on drinking it over a period of time, say at work or at the computer. Drinking something sugary over the course of an hour just keeps replenishing the coating of sugar on your teeth.

A standard comedic effect used in various media to emphasize the overindulgence that came before. In various talk shows that featured exceptionally obese people, they would often show a fast food customer ordering an exceptionally large meal including multiple sandwiches, fries and desserts, and concluding with, "and a Diet Coke." The comedy value is the apparent disconnect between caring so little about your weight that you get to that level, and the diet cola being an acceptable demonstration of effort to reduce that weight. Of course, the fact that a sizeable chunk of the soft-drink drinking population just prefer the taste of Diet Soda never comes into it. Nor is the fact that Diet Coke is the number one drink sold in the United States.

Oh, and Diet Coke's sugar substitute, Aspartame, as well as being 200 times sweeter than sugar, actually increases your appetite. And now you know.

It usually shows up by adding one more small amount to an otherwise fantastically large order.
