Strange legends surround the family at Pride's Point--stories of a Puritan ancestor accused of witchcraft, and of a ghostly fiddler who still haunts the Witches' Bridge. People say a curse follows whoever hears the Fiddler. Now young Dan Pride has come to live at Pride's Point with his uncle. He believes the stories are just superstition--until he learns that years ago his grandfather died near the bridge as the Fiddler played. Then one night Dan, too, hears the music. Will he be able to escape the terror that hangs over the Witches' Bridge?

* AffablyEvil: . While he's friendly, likable, and a joking tease from the start of the book, the behavior continues after TheReveal of his villain status. The mask does come off sometimes (particularly during said reveal scene), and some of this is clearly an act to fool the authorities, but even when there's no one around during the climax except for him, and Dan, he continues to whistle, laugh, and make jokes--which, true to the trope, makes him more chilling for it.

* MeaningfulName: Just about everyone in the story has one of these. Dan Pride (and by extension his whole family), very much exhibiting that FatalFlaw, just like his uncle, grandfather, and his ancestor Samuel. The HolierThanThou Bishops who started the feud by accusing the Prides of witchcraft. Caliban, the evil (looking) dog, who like his namesake is beaten, treated like a pariah and slave, unfairly hated, and rejected to the point of turning on everyone around him. It is inverted, however, with the Coreys--the name itself is a reference to Giles Corey of the Salem witch trials, who proudly went to his death by pressing to keep his land from being confiscated...but , is an even worse liar, manipulator, arsonist, and attempted murderer, and it is Dan who instead stays silent to keep from incriminating himself.
** In-story: The skiff Jinx is this, named by Dan to remind himself of the way people view the Prides as a motivator to expose the Bishops as the real source of ruin and blame. Of course he comes to regret that name when it ends up being viewed by the firemen, Billy Ben, and Julian at exactly the wrong time, reminding them of his having heard the Fiddler.

* AlwaysIdenticalTwins: Pip and Gilly. The fact they are pre-pubescent helps, since boys and girls have much more similar body structures at that age, but it is pointed out several times in the narrative how their facial features and hair color/style are identical. Not only does this allow for the MistakenIdentity moment at the town library where Dan thinks Gilly is Pip, it also lets Gilly replace Pip to lead the BigBad away on a wild goose chase so Dan can find the witches' passage.

* BrutalHonesty: Gilly suffers from this. While sometimes it manifests as her not thinking through how certain words or phrases might be construed, it usually relates to resentment over how the present-day Bishops are blamed for what their ancestors did or stating in no uncertain terms what she thinks of Julian. By the end of the story when the feud has been laid to rest, it takes a more heartwarming turn when she blurts out her wish that Julian could come with them in the skiff to visit Lamie.

First quoted in reference to the fate of Samuel Pride and his wife after they were accused of witchcraft, then repeated to Dan when the BigBad is hunting him down at the climax. * StarCrossedLovers: Julian and Ann Bishop were this.this, each hailing from one of the FeudingFamilies and determined at the time to be together anyway for the sake of their love. They had in fact intended to reveal their secret relationship after their fathers finalized an important business deal, as a way to end the feud. Unfortunately Old Dan's death and the disappearance of his briefcase ruined this, as the Prides believed the Bishops were lying and once more responsible for misfortune. Julian cut all ties with Ann, refusing even to go to her when she asked to meet at the bridge, since he believed she either knew what her family had been "planning" or did not disapprove after the fact/helped maintain the "lie."

* YouAreGrounded: Played for more significance (and seriousness) than usual. Dan is told never to see the twins again (because they're Bishops) but does so anyway because, after initially and bitterly agreeing with his uncle, he's made to realize by Lamie that the twins didn't lie to deliberately hurt him, and that the Bishops aren't responsible for the FeudingFamilies. So he tries to learn the truth...only for Billy Ben to catch them together. Understandably (but infuriatingly), Julian decides to not only ground Dan for this, but for this to be a precursor to sending him away back to boarding school for his own good as well as for breaking his word. However, Billy Ben later returns to let him out of his locked room. While this does allow Dan to find the witches' chamber and solve the mystery to end the story, it also deprives him of an alibi for , and as a result Gilly even tries to get him back and locked in again--but it's too late.
