Even those who deal regularly with the cultists' Dawnir technology are baffled by it (understandable when said technology can do things like teleport, create life from paintings and animate corpses into zombies). Also ancient human science had reached such an apex that the majority of the population could no longer understand it and they rebelled by going Luddite.

* InvadingRefugees: The Okun are alien invaders from another dimension are coming because their world is dying.

* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Papus, the leader of her cult thought she was the greatest scientist on Earth. However when she went through Dartun Sur's belongings, she finds out that he's much better versed in Dawnir technology than she ever was. Also Malum the half vampire is the king badass in Villren, but he's completely curbstomped when he goes up against the albino SuperSoldier Commander Brynd.

* AlienInvasion: A far-future Earth with a red sun is being invaded by the Akhaioi, alien invaders (sort of...they're former creations of humanity) from another dimension.

* AnyoneCanDie: ''Nobody'' is safe. People can drop dead when you least expect it.

* MoralEventHorizon: Dartun Sur completely leaps it when he makes a deal with the Akahaioi. They rebuild his body and allow the remainder of his cult to become housing for dimension gate couplings, instead of having their bones yanked out of the body. In return he is to summon a sky city over Villjamur which will completely destroy the city. Interestingly after the deal, Dartun Sur becomes increasingly more tyrannical and murderous.
** Malum has his after he hired a witch to kill his ex-wife, Bemi. After the attempt, Malum became greedier and more xenophobic.

* {{Transgender}}: Lan is a transgender acrobat at circus and makes a deal with a cultist to get a sex change operation. Afterwards, she gets found out by the Inquisition and is dragooned into becoming a Villjamur Knight, because of her tolerance to cultist medical procedures.

* TookALevelInBadass: Eir, by the end of the first book. She got lessons in dance and swordsmanship from Randur.

* FloatingContinent: The Akahaioi (Okun) have brought their entire civilization in the massive sky city Policharos. [[spoiler: Without the destruction of the Policharos, it would have been impossible to stop the alien invasion.]]

''Legends of The Red Sun'' has also been viewed as the closing chapter of the New Weird era of the 2000s, as that subgenre was falling out of favour after the heights of Mieville's ''New Crobuzon''.

* BadassGay: Brynd actually enjoys being the submissive and clandestinely purchases male prostitutes for a good time. He is also a fearless and effective warrior who can easily kick the ass of anyone who has an issue with him. [[spoiler: He defeats ''Malum'' in a duel of all people.]]
