* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: The technology, capabilities, and overall doctrine of interstellar warfare and starship combat have changed considerably over the course of the books. In ''Shadow of Freedom'', rather than repeatedly mention that the Solarian League Navy is hopelessly obsolescent (as had been done in previous books), they simply put the POV on a Solarian admiral trying to figure out what the Manticorans intend to do with a handful of destroyers by predicting the strategies they'd need to use to successfully lay in an attack. Even with the longer-ranged missiles, she still assumes they will be limited by useful payload, fire control lag, weight of fire, and the need for several of the missiles to be penetration aids to divert enemy point defense to allow the missiles to strike their targets - all tactics highlighted in the first few books before the development of FTL communications and the Manticoran Missile Massacre rendered all that moot over a half dozen books earlier.

** In ''Shadow of Freedom'', the ships led by Commodore Zavala is part of the same squadron whose ships were killed by Josef Byng in ''Storm From the Shadows.'' Especially ''Tristram'', who was the survivor of that attack and the one who brought word to Manticore. They're almost itching to fight the Solarians in Saltash as payback. Zavala even contemplates whether his plan to attack outright instead of use the [[MacrossMissileMassacre Missile Massacre]] fake out and detonating the missiles just before they would hit was a result of pragmatism (not wanting to waste a now precious limited number of missiles) or this trope. He decides he's fine either way until the Solarians surrender and [[spoiler:his ships have locked the salvos too closely together, making them unable to ''stop'' the attack in time to let the Sollies abandon ship]].

** In ''Shadow of Freedom'', Captain Zavala and Lieutenant Hearns mercilessly dig into the Saltash governor and the leaders of the Solarian gendarmes respectively. ** Captain Zavala in ''Shadow of Freedom''. He has no problem with attacking the Solarian force when it refuses to surrender. The moment they do -- after Zavala's first salvo utterly destroys its target -- Zavala realizes the ''next'' three salvos are already committed, preventing several thousand Solarians from abandoning ship in time, including the Vice Admiral.

For added irony, Zavala had gone with this plan instead of a [[MacrossMissileMassacre Missile Massacre]] fake-out partly to ''avoid'' overusing a now limited supply of missiles if the fake-out hadn't worked.

* DamageSpongeBoss: The Solarian League's navy is obsolete in every meaningful way. Earlier books (and at least one short story taking place farther in the past) feature the Plasma Torpedo, an immensely powerful starship weapon that is capable of entirely coring through a Battlecruiser... but is entirely useless against even the weakest sidewall and is very limited in range, being used almost exclusively to finish an enemy off at close range. ** In ''The Honor Of The Queen'', the religiously conservative Graysons initially can't handle Honor's mere presence, due to their prejudice against women. This changes after the planetary newsnet gets their hands on a security-camera recording of [[spoiler:Honor decimating a small army of armed assassins who were trying to kill the planet's leader -- with her bare hands.]] Afterwards, nobody dares question her worthiness of command, which may look like they're following the logic of this trope.
