** Vincent, though he also has traits of an UnscrupulousHero. His hate for the cult has reached AxCrazy levels, to the point where he'll kill anyone who he thinks is standing in his way against them. Eventually, he comes around to [[EnemyMine cooperating with Daniel]], [[spoiler:and pulls a HeelFaceTurn after being [[BreakTheHaughty broken]] by a hallucination of his wife and trying to kill Simon.]]

''The Void'' is a 2016 CosmicHorror film.

Officer Daniel Carter is sitting in his cruiser on a desolate road one night, when he finds a man covered in blood. He brings the man to a hospital, where one of the nurses murders a patient and mutilates herself. Shortly after, he finds the hospital surrounded by a group of mysterious hooded figures, and something far more horrific inside the hospital itself.

* ConspicuousCG: While almost all effects are done using practical means and are really good, [[spoiler: the greenscreen showing empty desert behind Daniel and Allison in the final scene is almost painfully obvious]].

* HelloNurse: Downplayed. Allison and Kim are very attractive, but aren't objectified in any way.

* EldritchAbomination: Discussed by [[spoiler:Powell]]. Some amoral entity from the other side gave [[spoiler:him]] the means to bring people back from the dead, though certainly [[CameBackWrong not the way they wanted]]. But while the tentacled monsters summoned from the Void are certainly creepy, the actual godlike Eldritch Abomination is revealed at the end [[spoiler:to be [[SinisterGeometry a giant floating pyramid]] (the symbol of the cult), or at least that's the form that Daniel and Allison perceive it as.]]

* KillItWithFire: Vincent and Simon put on fire anyone or anything that they've killed. Or just ''wounded''. [[spoiler: It doesn't work with Transformed!Sarah, as it survives even being put ablaze]].

* AxCrazy: It's telling that Vincent's first scene on camera sees him shooting a girl, then soaking her in gasoline and lighting her on fire while she's still alive. Once he and Simon get to the hospital, he doesn't show any qualms with trying to chop off Daniel's head, and even considers burning down what's left of the building.

* {{Foil}}: Carter, to [[spoiler:Powell. Both of them lost children, although Carter's child was stillborn, whereas Powell's daughter was a little older when she died. Furthermore, Carter is accused by Powell of being relieved at said stillbirth, and Powell is always polite and soft-spoken as opposed to the crass and stubborn Carter.]]

* NoNameGiven: Every character in the story is named, even if they play no role in it or are TheGhost... except for the girl from the very opening scene.
* NoSell: [[spoiler: Daniel axes Richard. He doesn't even flinch, while the axe remains in his shoulder.]]

* WhyDontYouJustShootHim: The cultists could easily take over the hospital at any moment, [[spoiler: perform the ritual and be done with it]]. Instead, they just stand outside and wait, [[spoiler: which gives the trapped characters all the time they need to figure out what they need and stop said ritual from the inside]]. Largely justified — the heroes are afraid of the monsters inside and being held hostage by Vincent and Simon, and thus ultimately have nowhere to go, regardless of whether the cultists storm the hospital or not.

** [[spoiler:Dr. Richard Powell is a more straightforward example. He believes that he's doing something beneficial for humanity. Said "something beneficial" is summoning the spirits of the dead and placing them in the bodies of the living, resulting in self-mutilation and transforming into disgusting, mutated abominations.]]

* JumpScare: Subverted — or at least downplayed — when Kim hides in the vent. There's a lingering shot of the corridor in front of her, but a disciple just casually walks in, without a ScareChord.

* MadDoctor: [[spoiler: Richard was already insane enough to start the cult and perform a string of ritual murders/summonings, but when he dies and get back himself, he goes on a lengthy rant about ability to study new, uncharted territory, while cutting off his own face. ForScience]]

* AntiHero: Carter is a mix between types III and IV. He's [[GoodIsNotNice perfectly willing to let Vincent and Simon smash James' hands with a hammer]], but overall, he's a decent guy who wants to protect Allison from harm. Vincent and Simon are {{Unscrupulous Hero}}es, though Vincent teeters towards an AntiVillain status, given his outward demeanor.

* BlackGuyDiesFirst: The only non-white character is the asian Kim [[spoiler: and she [[AvertedTrope doesn't die]]]].

* HumanoidAbomination: [[spoiler:Powell. For whatever reason, he's the only person to come back from the Void and retain his human form, albeit with a lot less skin, though this is implied to be self-inflicted.]]
* ItGetsEasier: [[spoiler: After Daniel shots Bev, he hits PTSD attack and suffers a breakdown. By third act he has absolutely no qualms about killing Allison, whom he was trying to rescue for past hour]].

* CosmicHorrorStory[=/=]LovecraftLite: It falls somewhere between these two spectrums. On one hand, it's action-packed [[spoiler:and has a relatively hopeful ending]], but on the other, there are proven to be [[EldritchAbomination ancient forces out there beyond human comprehension]], and [[TimeAbyss far older than time as we know it]], and the afterlife isn't really shown to be a place one would want to go.

* TheLoad: Carter, Vincent, and Simon drag James with into the basement against his will, despite him being handcuffed, defenseless, and claiming to not being involved with the cult. As it turns out, [[spoiler: James was telling the truth, so taking him along was useless]].

* ButtMonkey: James, by far. First, he's [[spoiler: kidnapped by a cult, drugged, forced to participate in sadistic sex rituals and watch them murder people]]. Then, [[spoiler: he barely escapes death, only to be taken to a hospital where's sedated by the same man who kidnapped him, wakes up to being attacked by the Beverly-creature, and is knocked unconscious and handcuffed to a rail for rightfully killing the Big Bad.]] And when he tells everyone what happened to him, they [[spoiler: don't believe him, assume he's part of the cult that tortured him, and drag him against his will into the basement]] where he is [[spoiler: promptly murdered, mercifully quick, by a monster.]]

* TheLoad: James. For starters, he's a junky. A still drugged junky. And if that wasn't enough, [[spoiler: [[DrivenToMadness he was already roughed up by the cultists]]. However, when he turns into TheMillstone, Daniel feeds him to one of the monsters without any remorse and to buy some time]].

* AntiHero: Carter is a mix between types III and IV. He's [[GoodIsNotNice perfectly willing to let Vincent and Simon smash James' hands with a hammer]], but overall, he's a decent guy who wants to protect Allison from harm. He [[WouldHitAGirl tries to hurt Allison]] and refers to Maggie as "the teenage fucking slut". Also, he strongly considers burning down what's left of the hospital with everyone still in it. However, he eventually starts to cool down slightly, and it's clear that he loves Simon and only wants [[spoiler:to avenge their family.]]

* InMediasRes: The film opens with what looks like a murder of random young woman and then the plot picks up from there. While the context is eventually provided, none of the events prior to that scene are shown and they are only alluded or sparsly discussed.
