* KilledOffscreen: When Baltus sees [[spoiler:the Horseman advancing on Lady Van Tassel, he flees to the church without staying and potentially becoming a victim. This turns out to be a subversion as Lady Van Tassel is revealed to be FakingTheDead.]]

Steenwyck knows he's [[spoiler:full of crap, of course, because he actually wants to stop Crane from unmasking the true culprit behind the murders and the one who's actually pulling the Horseman's strings: Lady Van Tassel, whom Steenwyck also happens to support and is in an adulterous relationship with]].

* TortureIsIneffective: Ichabod's tasking in the Burgomaster's courtroom is preceded by a deleted scene, where an inventor is hawking a "foolproof" interrogation device to the law enforcement authorities. The inventor claims that a suspect placed inside his device - which resembles an iron maiden without spikes - will suffer no permanent injury, but have no choice but to confess the truth. Ichabod traps the inventor in his own device and refuses to release him until he signs a confession to the murder of the man discovered the previous night in the river. Of course the inventor had no involvement in the crime, but he is in so much pain that he signs immediately, and Ichabod facetiously holds up the confession as "proof" of the man's guilt. The part of Ichabod's tirade that innocent people are being convicted based on "evidence" and "confessions" of no more worth than ''"this one"'' made it into the final cut. Considering [[spoiler:what is later revealed to have happened to Ichabod's mother]], he was keeping his reaction to the inventor's sales pitch remarkably under control.

* DarkerAndEdgier: This interpretation of ''The Legend of Sleepy Hollow'' is much more legitimately frightening than the original, most notably thanks to the very real Headless Horseman killing people in cold blood. There are darker themes in this adaptation as well, ranging for sexual desire to black magic to religious fanaticism. Of course, we can expect nothing less from Creator/TimBurton.

* ArtisticLicenseBiology: Ichabod is sprayed in the face with blood when he cuts into a decapitated cadaver. Not only would a long-dead corpse have no blood pressure, but a headless one wouldn't really even have any more ''blood''. It's probably an exceptionally morbid example of RuleOfFunny, though (he is, after all, doing an autopsy on someone whose cause of death is quite obvious). There is an attempted hand wave for the latter case, as it's said the Horseman's blade cauterizes the wounds of the heads he cuts off.
