The movie skips ahead ten years, to when Danielle is eighteen. Their estate has fallen onto hard times and things keep "disappearing," to the anger of the Baroness. Danielle has, of course, become a virtual house slave to the family, but takes comfort in the familial love she shares with the servants and the kindness she receives from Jacqueline. One morning, she is gathering apples in the estate's orchard when she spies someone stealing the horse of her late father. Enraged, she chucks apples at him, ultimately causing him to fall. It turns out to be the Crown Prince of France, running away from a father who wants to marry him off.

A courtship ensues, in which Danielle keeps trying to tell Henry that she is really not a countess and the Baroness gets increasingly suspicious of Danielle's odd appearances and disappearances. The King and Queen, desperate to marry their son off, are delighted that he has found a girl...but are keen to meet her, something Danielle wishes to avoid. Meanwhile, LeonardoDaVinci, who has been invited to court, befriends both Danielle and Henry and everything seems to be going along well, save for Danielle's growing anxiety about maintaining the masquerade.

Danielle de Barbarac (DrewBarrymore) is the beloved only child of the widowed Auguste de Barbarac and his late wife, Comtesse Nicole de L'incre. When she is eight years old, he remarries the Baroness Rodmilla de Ghent (portrayed by AnjelicaHuston), and brings her home along with her two daughters, spoiled and cruel Marguerite and gentle but timid Jacqueline, into the family. Shortly thereafter, he dies, leaving Danielle to the care of her stepmother, who already resents the love that he displays to his daughter, and the estate's three devoted servants, housemaids Paulette and Louise and Paulette's husband Maurice.

When Danielle returns to the estate, she learns that, in order to pay off some of the debt, the Baroness has sold Maurice, who is to be shipped to the Americas as a slave. Not willing to lose her old friend without a fight, Danielle decides to go to the castle to rescue him. Disguised in her mother's fancy clothing and using her name, she makes her way to the castle... where she catches the eye of the Prince, who does not recognize her. He admires her spunk, though, and asks to meet her again.

off]].

Driving the "masquerade" metaphor home even further, the King and Queen hold a masked ball and tell Henry he must choose his bride by the end of the evening...unfortunately, the suspicious stepmother has figured out what Danielle is up to, and forbids her to attend. Luckily, Leonardo shows up and tricks her out for the ball after the family has left. When she arrives at the ball, all eyes fall upon the beautiful young woman. Just as she is about to meet Henry, though, Rodmilla reveals her true identity. Furious, Henry belittles her in front of the entire court, and Danielle runs away, humiliated. Henry then accepts his parents' choice of wife, the Princess of Spain, and goes up on a rampart to brood. There he encounters Leonardo, who proceeds to give him an incredible dressing down, ending with "you don't deserve her."

Back on the farm, Danielle buries herself in her work, causing Rodmilla to comment on her newfound productivity. However, that isn't enough to cause Rodmilla to keep her around. Instead, it is revealed that nothing has been stolen after all - the Baroness had been selling household articles all along to make some money. The buyer, Monsieur le Peu, agrees to trade back everything he's purchased in exchange for ownership of Danielle, and takes her away. Kept in chains, Danielle is forced to be the man's slave. He constantly sexually harasses her, but she has no recourse. Ultimately, however, he goes one step too far and Danielle, apparently a very good swordswoman, tells him either to let her go or she will "slit him from navel to nose."

In the meanwhile, Henry tries to go through with his marriage to the Spanish Princess, but the ceremony is disrupted by her increasingly desperate sobbing. Although Henry does not know a word of her language, she manages to make him understand that she is in love with one of her parents' courtiers, and does not want to marry Henry at all. He releases her from their betrothal contract, encouraging her to go and be with the man she loves, and promptly leaves the wedding with a similar goal in mind for himself. Outside, however, he encounters Jacqueline and the servants, who tell him what's become of Danielle. Chilled and angry, he rushes to her rescue... only to find that she has rescued herself. He begs her forgiveness and, once that is received, takes her to the castle and they marry off-screen.

The Baroness and her daughters are invited to the castle, and Henry's manservant Laurent even brings the carriage to collect them, saying that the King wants them to arrive in style. They promptly dress in their finest and make their way to court, where the Baroness and Marguerite are sure that Henry will ask for Marguerite's hand in marriage. However, upon their arrival, they discover that some shady dealings that Rodmilla made in the beginning of the film are coming back to bite them. Jacqueline, who has been aware the whole time that the situation is not what her mother and sister were expecting, has done nothing wrong and is left alone by the monarchs. Rodmilla and Marguerite, on the other hand, are stripped of their noble titles and are going to be sold into slavery in the New World -- unless someone will speak up on their behalf. After they endure the stony silence of the entire court, they are saved when Princess Danielle comes in and is introduced to them as Henry's wife. They curtsey to her, against their will, and she rescues them from slavery in the sugar fields, instead asking the King to show them the same courtesy they have shown her. He sentences them to work in the palace laundries, and Danielle and Henry live HappilyEverAfter.
