* ''Comments'': One thing I'd like to point out is how incredibly well-written the Azuma Ichi (the OC) is. His looks are barely commented on at all throughout the entire story. Instead, it's his quirky personality that draws Haruhi (and the reader) to him. And by quirky, I don't mean "Tamaki" quirky; it's more mysterious-guy-with-weird-habits-and-hobbies kind of quirky. And unlike most OCs, his relationship with the other host club members goes as well as one would expect if Haruhi fell in love with another guy; Tamaki and Hikaru react with jealousy, while everyone else is worried but minds their own business because hey, he's not that bad. The plot itself is rather interesting since it's not just about the blooming romance between Haruhi and Ichi; it goes out of its way to explain more about Ichi's past. I won't say anything because that would be spoilers but nonetheless, the story's a great read for those who are open to the idea of Haruhi dating someone outside of canon.

* ''Comments'': Short, wickedly clever, meticulously characterized.

* ''Synopsis'': A magical AU fic where elementals live amongst normal humans, Ouran teaches elemancy at a high level, each of the Host Club members controls one of the elements (light, dark, fire, lightning, wind, earth and water) and the Host Club get dragged into a problem with group of elementals that are much more powerful and experienced than they are.
* ''Comments'': An AU world that is plausible and well thought out while keeping the characters recognisable.
** @/{{Guessmyname}}: It's a brilliant fic: the AU is consistent and both fits into the story easily whilst not detracting from the characters. Despite being different, it's just as good as the original work (though more serious).
** @/{{flames04}}: This is seriously one of the best fics in the entire category. It's the kind of fanfic that just makes you wish it was the actual anime. The progress is splendid and the descriptiveness is bloody amazing.
** @/{{blankdude}}: If this troper had one complaint, it'd be that the author obviously set up a sequel and then dropped off the face of the internet. WhatCouldHaveBeen, indeed.

* ''Commentary'': An angst-y and very long oneshot about a character no one ever hears anything about. Very sad, but still very good.

* ''Commentary'': Both fics are well done, but incredibly sad, the second one in particular.

* ''Synopsis'': Events occur that cause Tamaki to reevaluate his decision to come to Japan...however, intervention becomes necessary to show him just how much his absence will effect everyone he knows.
* ''Commentary'': Technically, this is a pairing fic (Tamaki/Haruhi) but the story focuses on Tamaki's friendship with all the former hosts rather than just his relationship with Haruhi. It is, as you may have guessed, based on ItsAWonderfulLife and as such, does get very sad when you see the Host Club members fates had Tamaki not come to Ouran (the twins in particular). The only potential downside is that the author may or may not have intended for the identity of Tamaki's guardian angel to be a surprise; if she did, then she didn't really do a good job of it.

* ''Commentary'': ...I don't think it needs to be said that this fic is sad but just in case... yeah; it is really, REALLY sad.

* ''Commentary'': A pretty good Hurt/Comfort fic. Rather depressing at some points, but it still has its heartwarming moments.

* ''Commentary'': A very well-written fic that manages to mix [[TearJerker Tear Jerkers]] with [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming Heartwarming moments]] as well as highlight the close relationship between the twins and [[TrueCompanions the tightknit nature of the Host club]] while giving Hikaru a real BigBrotherInstinct. Also includes two alternate endings; the first is...well...[[AllJustADream odd]] but still manages to have a [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming heartwarming]] first portion and a second portion that's just mysterious enough to be slight NightmareFuel while the second alternate ending is a complete TearJerker. Well worth a read.
* ''Trigger warnings'': Torture and [[spoiler:character death]]

* ''Comments'': This fanfic proves that the author's name is appropriately chosen. It's clever and funny, and captures the whimsical, self-deprecating tone of the original show/manga perfectly. The characterization is spot on, and I'd love to think that this is how it all turns out.

* ''Comments'': That's what this story is. Freaking...freaking cute. Haruhi falls in love by degrees, oblivious until it's so obvious even she can't miss it [[spoiler: (not that things become clear even after she does)]], and the journey is just...cute. The protagonists are well-written, rounded--and the author is really good at writing [[OriginalCharacter original characters]], as seen in the case of the Black Magic Club members, whose shenanigans, although a relatively small part of the plot, are entertaining on their own.
** @/{{Guessmyname}}: Seconding this. The [=OCs=] don't feel anything like [=OCs=]; they feel like they've always been there and that they belong. Having not read the manga, I even uncertain as to whether they were simply characters the anime had dropped, curtsey of the reduced focus on the DMC. On that note, I should also mention: this fic follows the ''manga'' plotline. Not big differences from the anime, only that Nekozawa turns up more often. [[spoiler: That beach house where Tamaki discovers Haruhi's fear of lightning? That's actually Nekozawa's in the manga, which is important for reasons that turn up later.]]

* ''Commentary'': Yes, this is a fic were the hosts are basically Haruhi's harem, but it's very realistically done. The former hosts all had to give up any family inheritances they might've had, few family members still speak to them, and Haruhi continues to remind them that this may not last forever.

* ''Commentary'': It provides a good look into Ranka's mind. Very sweet and well written.

* ''Pairing'': Tamaki/Haruhi

* ''Commentary'': Every story is sweet, cute, and romantic. Some are funny, some angst-y, but they're all great and definitely worth the read.

* ''Commentary'': There aren't a lot of fics out there about Benio, but this is probably one of the best. There is a bit of [[spoiler: one-sided]] femslash, just so you know.

* ''Commentary'': Though this is a pairing fic, I'm not going to say what it is because that would just ruin the story (it's not yaoi or yuri though).

* ''Comments'': A very brilliant take of Kyouya's relationship with Tamaki and the Host Club through the eyes of Yoshio Ootori. The relationship between Kyouya and his father is also expertly explored in an unexpected fashion.

* ''Comments'': A rare-ish main pairing, and most welcome for those of us who like thinking that Kaoru and Kyoya quietly got together int the background of the manga. On top of that, it's well-written, true to the series, in-character, and even manages the right mix of drama, comedy, and utter sap that makes the manga so enjoyable.

* ''Commentary'': Probably the only Ranka pairing story you're going to find on FF.net (so far). It hasn't been updated in a while, but what's there is very good. The OC is well written and his and Ranka's interactions are fun to read. It comes off as the real deal, rather than a yaoi fantasy.
