* WeaponsKitchenSink: Among the officers of the Nightmares, at least - you've got a SinisterScythe, CombatTentacles, [[DropTheHammer a big freaking hammer]], [[MoreDakka enough guns to arm a small platoon]], tonfas, and the obligatory {{BFS}}.

* DramaticIrony: A big part of drama surrounding Lauren is this.
** Lauren desires to "become fear" as a motivation [[spoiler: To this end, she sells her gun designs to a big name manufacturer with a stipulation that her epithet name be the brand name. This only leads to the World Government not only ''not'' immediately raising her bounty to prevent her notoriety, but gives them the drive to start reverse engineering the designs. Add to that Kaido's Beast Pirates buying out the whole first run of weapons ''and'' the fact that she surrounds herself with her "ghosts," and Lauren has essentially not only inadvertently ''armed her enemies, but also made it so Kaido's army, the Marines, and her own subordinates overshadow her as being something to be feared.'' Not only that, but she's also indirectly aided Kaido oppressing the land of wano, when she cites her being oppressed as part of her reasoning to "become fear."]]
** Despite shutting herself down emotionally to do her work, she's the most vocal about her self-loathing, the most emotionally vulnerable, and when given a chance quickly befriends Simo, a Marine Ensign, despite knowing Vinci's plans for a brutal betrayal.

* RuleOfCool: Occasionally, a cardinal rule in the One Piece universe is broken in order for something to work, usually to create a new element or character:
** [[spoiler: C is a hairless Ghoul clone of Captain Eustass Kid, grown accidentally from his dismembered arm in a vat of fluid and Kaneki's cells. Despite being seperate from Kid, C is also able to use the powers of the Magnet-Magnet Fruit, undiluted but only via the original arm. When Kid dies, C gets an upgrade to his power instead of it becoming a new Devil Fruit, without awakening it.]]
** [[spoiler: Foglio Claire is crucified by Kid when he loses it and goes on a rampage, despite it being established that her powers counter his (due to bronze of her Cog-Cog fruit not being able to magnetize). The cool aspect comes in while dying, as she saves her surviving (also crucified) shipmates by stuffing them with gears. Disregarding saving them as an Awakened ability, This creates (among others) Archimedes Newsam, who -somehow- is what amounts to an immortal (though not invincible) Bronze cyborg with a hive mind made up of robot beetles he can put into corpses to puppeteer them as extensions of himself.]]
** [[spoiler:''The Prometheus'', or Theo, is a giant EldritchAbomination GhostShip created by Vinci apparently giving the Haunt-Haunt Devil Fruit to the Klabautermann of their dying ship, ''The Ends Justified.'' By One Piece's logic, this would be a very bad idea because, as a ship, ''Theo spends most of his time with his body in contact with the sea'' which should outright nullify his powers and strength, or at least dampen them, and he becomes fairly huge, which means a ''lot'' of him would be submerged. Yet, he is a ghost who's able to be a RealityWarper in his own depths. Never mind the fact the devil fruit is eventually revealed to essentially kill its user to function in the first place, which raises several contradictions.]]

** Goro Gripper proves to be one when [[spoiler: ordered to burn Arcadia to the ground and kill everyone there, refusing to do so and even cooperating with the Hunt to avoid civilian casualties rather than accept horrific orders.]]

* {{Deconstruction}}: The Fic is one to the One Piece universe. It focuses on a Non-Straw Hat narrative, so it shows how a Non-Straw Hat pirate Crew would form and manage to become a threat, with all the ugly sides that would entail warranting a high bounty and making decisions
** Another angle of Deconstruction comes in the form of it also being partially one to the idea of a self-insert fic, as Kaneki front-loads all he knows not only to his crew, but also [[spoiler: to the Revolutionary Army]]. While that may help in the long run, the info is not immediately useful and the fact that he has his own adventures with a crew in a different stretch of ocean means a lot of One Piece's big players are incidental unless they come looking for him in some way.

* WeHardlyKnewYe: Many opponents and characters are set up and die within the same chapters they are introduced. They get [[OneSceneWomder powers, interesting abilities, and may even get a little backstory]], but most will be lucky to survive being a part of a MookHorrorShow.

** The sixth saga is titled Tyrant, and begins with the Law Arc (141-154), then Might (155-ongoing).

* ProtagonistCenteredMorality:The Nightmares are really a nasty, immoral bunch when you get down to it, prone to DisproportionateRetribution and violence that makes the worst of the original works' Pirates seem tame by comparison. The crimes they commit are arguably ''often just as equal to or worse than many of the canonical crimes of The World Government,'' and yet most people are okay with them visiting their islands initially, and if they do have issues, they'll be gone in short order after some sort of explanation or convenience, all while claiming to be the moral betters and having standards. Keep in mind that their crimes include:
** Cannibalism (not initially by choice, but still done often, even after Vinci [[spoiler: has more-or-less cured it.]])
** Human experimentation (Vinci's specialty)
** Weapons Dealing
** ColdBloodedTorture while stationed as a Warlord on false pretenses (in methodology similar to ''Blackbeard'' of all people, which also leads to [[spoiler: a whole town's worth of people dead from withdrawl and a good man commiting suicide for being tricked into nothing.]])
** destroying named blades (a big deal in One Piece, which has many swordsmen in its universe)
** DesecratingTheDead by turning a dead/dying person into a mechanical MeatPuppet via OrificeInvasion
** Terrorism

* SinisterScythe: Vinci wields one from the Crucix Arc up until the end of the Spice Archipelago Saga, where it gets broken. He replaces it after the Slaughterhouse Arc. In both cases, it's notable that it's a [[BladeOnAStick proper war scythe]] rather than the more traditional version, with the blade parallel to the shaft (and thus more practical than most examples of this trope).

''The Butcher Bird'' is a Manga/OnePiece[=/=]Manga/TokyoGhoul SelfInsert {{Crossover}} fanfic starring the eponymous Butcher Bird, Yoshimura Kaneki, who, a few years before canon, finds himself on an unknown island, his body changed into that of a flesh-eating ghoul. In short order, he finds himself joining a pirate crew...but, unlike many One Piece fics, ''not'' that of the Straw Hats. The crew, called the Nightmare Pirates, and their journey is the focus of the story, rather than the canon of Manga/OnePiece. Kaneki himself shares Protagonist duty with his captain, Grigori 'Alley Doc' Vinci.

* MookHorrorShow: Whoo boy. The first [[BreatherEpisode ''From the Decks of the World'']] is largely focused on [[ADayInTheLimelight various minor characters from previous arcs]], as well as showing the aftereffects of some of the Nightmares' more infamous adventures. And then [[MoodWhiplash the last segment]] is from the point of view of a Marine who sees his entire armada ''slaughtered'' by a massive...''thing'' that shares a lot of characteristics with the Dragon from Anime/TokyoGhoul.

* OneSteveLimit: Averted. There's [[AxeCrazy Jack 'The Drought']], Kaido's right-hand man and billion-berry bounty...and then there's [[OnlySaneMan Rubeus 'Thundering Hammer' Jack]], bosun of the Nightmare Pirates. In a manner of speaking, there's also Kaneki, who picked his name after forgetting whatever it was originally solely because it 'felt right', and thus ended up sharing a name with two characters from Manga/TokyoGhoul - the main character Ken Kaneki, and the One-Eyed-Owl's father, Yoshimura.
