* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler: Jane]] shows signs of seeing [[spoiler: John]] as one after finding out why he's called [[spoiler: [[TheRedBaron 'The Butcher of Tonfan']]]].

* ShoutOut: More than a few, but one memorable one where the team is trying to decide what to name a Kaiju. [[Machinima/RedVsBlue Wrex apparently doesn't think pumas are real animals.]] Also, Jondum Bau is apparently a fan of Batman.

** In John's memory of Torfan, two of the soldiers are [[Machinima/RedVsBlue Grif and Simmons]].

* AwesomeMcCoolname: [[HumongousMecha Neptune Overlord]], [[spoiler:the Shepards' Jaeger.]] Appropriately, it's named after [[MeaningfulName two of the codenames for the Battle Of Normandy]].

The story also has [[LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters a lot of characters in it,]] some who were mentioned, but didn't appear in game, other who show up far earlier than usual.

* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: A lot of Mass Effect's already huge cast shows up, as well as some people who were mentioned in the games, but never showed up, [[spoiler: such as Garrus' father.]]

* AdultFear: Jane's childhood [[DarkAndTroubledPast is never truly spoken of.]] All we really know is that she was raised in Hong Kong's ghettos, and that she [[LittleMissBadass killed a Krogan in a arena fight as a child.]] Imagine finding out where exactly your little girl has been all those years she was missing.

* BiggerBad: No one has seen the Reapers just yet. Also, it's implied that whoever was creating the Kaiju is still making them behind the scenes.

Though the story starts out much the same as the original games, it very quickly goes in a [[AlternateHistory completely different direction]]. Not least because of[[spoiler: Saren revealing his own Jaegers and Kaiju, all enhanced with space age technology]]. One very obvious change is the fact that there are two Shepards, male and female. One raised in space, the other in the ghettos of China. The differences that are caused by their different backgrounds are one of the things explored in-story.

* ActionGirl:
** Jane Shepard, full stop. Quickly proves to be the more vicious of the two Shepards.
** Ashley Williams, [[spoiler: now an N7 graduate]] proves to be at least as good as Jane, to the point where they even compliment each others work.

* BadassBookworm: Mordin is in top form here, [[spoiler:nearly taking out as many enemies in Saren's warehouse as the rest of John's squad put together.]]

* ChinaTakesOverTheWorld: technically, both the Shepards are Chinese citizens.

* GeniusBruiser: Jane Shepard, who not only loves fighting, but spends a lot of time hacking people for fun (Also see SherlockScan). Tali is also this, and John shows intelligence of his own.

* HeroOfAnotherStory: [[spoiler:Nihlus]], Jondum, and Tela, who head to Omega at the end of the Citadel Arc.

* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Tela when she comments on the Shepards' crew.

* ObliviousToLove: John in regards to Tali's affections.
* OddFriendship: Tali and Wrex seem to be hitting it off really well.

* OnlySaneMan: Kaiden is this when compared to the rest of the Normandy crew.

* SherlockScan: Jane pulls one on Saren, pointing out the various holes in his story for why he's on Eden Prime.

** [[JustifiedTrope Which makes sense.]] Having a giant robot that only works with two people and their special skills would mean that no one outside of those two people (or those with similar power sets) could use it to its maximum effectiveness.
* TemptingFate: On Illium, one of the Asari dockworkers states that she wouldn't let them dock even if they had Councelor Tevos on speed dial. Jane, who hacked Tevos' omnitool earlier, ''does'' have Tevos on speed dial. HilarityEnsues.
** In Mordin and Liara's lab, after being attacked by a miniature Kaiju (and killing it in seconds), Wrex ''deliberately invokes'' this by claiming that it was "Too easy." Cue many other monsters.

* NeverLiveItDown: the near-disastrous First Drifting of Mako Mori is why drifting is now tested out ''not'' connected to giant robots.
