No, actually, ALL tropes need explanation, no matter how Self Explanatory you think they are.

I really don\'t think we need to explain \'\'why\'\' the Shadow Queen is the Big Bad when it flat out told that she is the main villain. I don\'t think Zero Context example escuse works that way when its pretty obvious that she is the Big Bad, so no example is needed in my opinion.. I\'m removing the %\'s from Big Bad and Blondes Are Evil, becuase the Shadow Queen is the main villain and she is blond so she counts for both tropes.

Although most references in the fic come from ''VideoGame/PaperMarioTheThousandYearDoor'', many characters from other Mario games have and will appear, at least as cameos. Cyber Commander has said that there were four characters he definately ''never'' intended to appear: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser, the first three because they would overshadow the actual heroes of the fic, and the last because he feels that Bowser is Mario's enemy, and should not be anyone else's.

Not an example. Painful Transformation requires the character to be a shapeshifter. Removing accordingly. If someone insists the example fits the trope, then apply the right details that are clearly described in the story; no vague details, please.

* PainfulTransformation: In ''Redux'', [[spoiler:Iris was taken to a demon institute of sorts after agreeing to serve Graz'zt.]] During her stay, she was taken apart, reshaped, and put back togther. To say it was excruciatingly painful is an understatement. (Oddly enough, she claims that after only week, she started to enjoy it, suggesting that the bargain she made caused her to become masochistic.)

Adapted Out, Adaptation Expansion, and Adaptational Heroism only refer to adaptions. A remake, which is what \'\'Redux\'\' is, is NOT an adaptation. Removing accordingly.

* AdaptationExpansion: ''Redux'' expands on some more plot points that are only mentioned in the original version as well as includes a couple other subplots that include characters who otherwise stopped playing a role back in the original version.
* AdaptationalHeroism: A good number of characters who served the Shadow Queen in the original version are instead against her in ''Redux''. Some major examples include Rawk Hawk, General White, the Shy Guy General, and Tutankoopa.
* AdaptedOut: Quite a good number of characters from the original version are completely absent from ''Redux'' and are either replaced with new characters or have their roles filled in by already existing characters. The biggest case of this being important is the removal of Wanda Underwood, as she was a finalist in the original version. (See OldShame below for the reasons why.)

* ReassignedToAntarctica: While the inmates in the Shadow Queen's dungeons are clearly miserable, so are the demons summoned to guard them. They consider guarding humans to be a boring, mind-numbing job (even the ones in charge of "punishing" them) and would much rather be back home fighting in demonic armies. Many of them are sent here by the Queen's patron after messing up.

* WrongGenreSavvy: In the original, Melissa, Kurtis, Tyson, Maria, and Leopold attack Stan, Fran, and Andy upon their entry into the Palace of Shadows. Ordinarily, this would be a very [[WhyDontYaJustShootHim practical move on their part]] since the trio is an enemy of theirs and this act would get rid of them, but it becomes this trope since Shadow Queen's CurseEscapeClause ''requires'' the threesome to be defeated by her or someone under her employ (such as the aforementioned Shadow Spawn) in a fair contest. Since this attack would be anything ''but'' a fair contest, the Shadow Queen has to enact a VillianousRescue so as to keep her only way out of the Palace from being destroyed. Nevertheless, the actual damage to the place seems to be minimal (although it is shaken up a little) and even everyone at the ''impact point'' manages to survive (even though that actual part of the Palace doesn't; more than likely there was powerful magic in place by the Queen to buffer most of the impact, and she simply didn't bother mentioning it.)]]

But there are still a few sad events that keep the ending from being entirely happy. The Companions have to leave (although Francesca realizes asking them to stay after so long would be selfish). The worst part, however, is the horrid fate of Iris' soul; even though she repented, renounced her evil side, and helped the heroes win in the end, her bargain with Graz'zt still stands, and her soul is quickly claimed by the demon lord, possibly damning her forever. ** In ''Redux'' the Shadow Spawn are warned that should they lose their rematches against the heroes, they each get sent to the sixth floor of her dungeon. During those rematches, the Spawn refuse to tell the heroes what exactly is in the sixth floor. Leopold even stops the heroes attempts to save him from the evil portal that sucks the loser into the dungeon, because it's that frightening. (The most [[NightmareFuel unsettling thing about this]] is previous statements that the prison has ''nine'' floors total, suggesting that the sixth isn't even the worst.)

* HellholePrison: The prison below the Palace of Shadow is referenced a lot over the course of ''Redux'', but when Hyde infiltrates the place late in the fic, a good look at the inside of it is finally revealed, showing that it ''is'' a horrid place. Inmates are BoundAndGagged, ''and'' consigned to small cages, a few are trapped in [[CrystalPrison Crystal Prisons]], and in one area (where Hyde meets and rescues Rave) there's a large, fiery pit of flame that is serious NightmareFuel, clearly used for torture. While the demonic jailers (at least the ones on the top three levels) are [[TheGuardsMustBeCrazy incompetent at best]], it's obvious that they are only there to ''punish'' and abuse the inmates, and several other features of the prison itself prevent their escape.

* MugglesDoItBetter: Several instances spring up in the fic:
** Diana is able to defeat the Shadow Queen in a BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind, despite having no supernatural powers and no ties to the conditions surrounding her curse at all. (However, it does seem to take a severer drain on her energy.)
** Merlowe recruits Hyde to infiltrate the Queen's prison, as it is specifically warded to defend against magical intrusion, and has only light defenses against nonmagical intruders. Indeed, Hyde is able to make short work of most of the Mooks who serve as jailers and free Rave and Bianca quickly.
** Near the climax of the story, [[spoiler:the resistance outside the Palace starts to gain a clear advantage over the Queen's demonic army, although at least some of this comes from the inspiration they feel when it seems Stan and Francesca finally manage to wound the Queen.]]

Also, when Cindy duels Hino-Kagu-Tsuchi - who is working for the Queen - Puddingcess drops any illusion of being nice, and dispatches his monster with a violent kick.)

Although most references in the fic come from ''VideoGame/PaperMarioTheThousandYearDoor'', many characters from other Mario games have and will appear, at least as cameos. Cyber Commander has said that there are four characters that will definately ''not'' appear: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser, the first three because they would overshadow the actual heroes of the fic, and the last because he feels that Bowser is Mario's enemy, and should not be anyone else's.
