MCU has its own page now

to:

* ''EnsembleDarkHorse/MarvelCinematicUniverse''

* The Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse has created a few Darkhorses:
** The ComicBook/HowlingCommandos in ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger'', considering they're only in a handful of scenes and one montage. Since then they've returned for cameos in ''Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'', the ''Agent Carter'' short film, and the ''Agent Carter'' TV series.
** Another example from ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheFirstAvenger'' is Agent Peggy Carter, as played by HayleyAtwell. In the comics she's mainly just TheLostLenore to Steve, appearing first namelessly in flashbacks to the 40s. This film gave her a larger supporting role and [[http://www.heraldscotland.com/arts-ents/more-arts-entertainment-news/hayley-atwell-on-any-human-heart-and-flirting-with-captain-america-1.1068462 a new actress determined to do her most in portraying her]], showing her to be just as badass as Cap and his emotional partner. As a result the popularity of both the actress and the character ''exploded'', to the point where Peggy received her own {{Film/Marvel One Shot|s}} and then ''[[Series/AgentCarter TV show]]'', as well as cameos in ''[[Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier The Winter Soldier]]'', ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'', ''Film/AntMan'', and ''[[Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron Age of Ultron]]''. Peggy is, without a doubt, the most popular heroine in the MCU.
** Loki from ''{{Film/Thor}}'' has been hugely popular since the movie was released despite the fact that he is the villain and only has roughly twenty minutes of screen time. His popularity seems to rival that of [[ComicBook/TheMightyThor Thor]], the hero and [[AloofBigBrother older brother's]] popularity, especially the [[MrFanservice female]] fanbase, no doubt because of [[Creator/TomHiddleston his actor]]. And he does a repeat performance in ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'', in many places beating characters who are popular enough to carry their own movies (and sequels): ''Film/IronMan'', ''Film/{{Captain America|TheFirstAvenger}}'', ''Film/TheIncredibleHulk'' and Thor (again). Advertising for the ''Thor'' sequel quickly became almost entirely "Here's more Loki". And several months after filming ended, they went back and shot some additional scenes just of him.
** Idris Elba's performance as Heimdall in ''{{Film/Thor}}'' gets this. A classic case of AbilityOverAppearance, all but the most rabid of detractors enjoyed his performance and the hints that he's even more powerful than he lets on.
** For villain's side in ''{{Film/Thor}}'', there's Laufey. In the comics, he's been long dead and more or less forgettable. And while he's DiscOneFinalBoss in this film, he has pretty good characterization and is surprisingly favorable thanks to his PragmaticVillainy and ReasonableAuthorityFigure (despite still evil). The less can be said for Malekith in [[Film/ThorTheDarkWorld the sequel]] who is a BadBoss, FlatCharacter, and GenericDoomsdayVillain.
** [[Characters/AgentsOfSHIELD Agent Coulson]] from ''Film/IronMan'' ''Thor'', ''Film/IronMan 2'', and ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'' has quite a few fans. Remember the guy who kept trying to get Tony to get Iron Man to join SHIELD, was mostly ignored, and there's a RunningGag of him saying SHIELD's full name and being told it was too long? ''That's him.'' This gag's pretty much all he gets as well as being in a few crowd scenes. By now, he's one of the most popular characters in the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse just due to being his lovable Woobieish self, the face of SHIELD to everybody who doesn't like organizations like SHIELD. Watch "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer". You'll see why. PowersThatBe have definitely taken note and the actor has ''really'' gotten into the role, so he wound up in ''Thor'' and had a much bigger role in ''The Avengers''. There are ''two'' [[Film/MarvelOneShots short films with him]] (the other being The Consultant) and now he has appeared in first a non-canon side story in the comics, and then an [[CanonImmigrant appearance that definitely counts]]. Also, he's a major character in ''WesternAnimation/UltimateSpiderMan'', being the SHIELD agent who is under cover as the principal at Peter's high school, keeping an eye on them. His design is basically [[InkSuitActor the exact likeness of his actor, Clark Gregg]], and he also has the same voice - Gregg has so much fun with the role and is somewhat protective of it by now. There's just one Agent Coulson! He's also got a cameo in ''WesternAnimation/IronManArmoredAdventures.'' Coulson's gone from a bit part to a ''phenomenon.'' For a middle-aged human in a world of superheroes, he really impressed.
*** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJkXktD8PC0 "COULSON!!! YOU WILL BE AVENGED!!.... COULSAAAAAN!!!" ]]
*** And now, in likely the penultimate performance for an ensemble darkhorse, is the lead character of his own spin-off TV show.
** In ''Series/AgentsOfSHIELD'', Lorelei is also quite popular due to her cunning, [[EvilIsSexy looks]], and skill in battle.
** Antoine Triplett gets a lot of love for being a really nice guy and for having nice chemistry with Simmons. Many fans were ecstatic when he joined the team near the end of Season One and essentially [[spoiler: replaced Ward]].
** Before she had even ''appeared yet'' (or even being ''cast'' yet), Mockingbird had gained a lot of hype after she was revealed to be joining ''Agents of SHIELD''. [[http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=poll&id=250 CBR's SDCC announcement poll]] has her announcement as the ''highest'' rated announcement of the second day, even beating Sam Raimi's ''Franchise/EvilDead'' TV series announcement, ''Series/TheWalkingDead'' season 5 trailer reveal, and ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy'' sequel announcements. She also dominated [[http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=poll&id=264 a later poll]] concerning new characters people are hyped for in the second season, with 46% of the votes going to her. When she ''does'' appear, this does not change. Going from Tumblr, in less than twenty minutes of the episode finishing people were posting their love for her character, even ones who never heard about her or what was such a big deal about her.
** To a lesser extent than Bobbi, Mack, who joined the supporting cast in the second season, is also beloved for his friendship with Fitz, as well as being a genuinely friendly and charming character.
** Skye's father. Thanks to him being a complex, CreepyAwesome character and Kyle Maclachlan's magnificent performance, everytime he appeared on screen, you can bet the review and comments will be gushing about him and place him as the best thing in the episode.
** Raina has got a lot of attention from fans to her AffablyEvil, AntiVillain and MonsterFanGirl status, with many prasing Ruth Negga's awesome performance. It's the point that in the 5th episode was renamed to 'Girl in the Flower Dress' from 'Scorch' because even the creators like her.
** Dummy, from ''Film/IronMan''. Sure, it's an artificially living thing but it has its fans.
** [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy Yondu]] is gaining some popularity due to his badassery and fun lines.
** [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy Korath]] is quite well-liked, despite his lack of screentime compared to Ronan or Nebula.
** [[spoiler:Howard the Duck]] due to his hilarious cameo at the end at the end of ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy''. Marvel predicted this would happen and took full advantage of by digitally re-releasing his original comic series the same week as the movie's launch. He's also getting a new series which likely wouldn't have happened without the film.
** Heartwarmingly, [[spoiler:Laura Barton and her children]] from ''Film/AvengersAgeOfUltron'', who have been embraced by the fandom for adding more depth to Clint and [[spoiler:not dying at the end]].
** Spider-Man stole the show in ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar'', with his part in the big fight between the allies of Captain America and Iron Man being one of the most memorable parts of the film.
** Pre-release, Black Panther received a lot of attention despite his limited screen time in the trailers, thanks to his cool, comic-accurate costume and badassery (outrunning Captain America, roundhouse kicking Winter Soldier in the face, and casually shrugging off bullets). Upon the release of the movie, he's considered one of the best things about it.

* Colonel Miles Quaritch from ''Film/{{Avatar}}'' was probably not intended to be nearly as popular as he was (after all, he wasn't a perfect blue-skinned space alien or someone who joined their side). But when he showed as much sheer badassery as he did, it became impossible not to admire the guy to some extent, whatever side you're on. To further illustrate, Quaritch is not the main character of this movie. He is, in fact, a villain. ''The'' villain. Yet for a while, his was the longest and first section on [[Characters/{{Avatar}} the character sheet]]. Not to mention the only character to get his own listing. All the other characters were grouped together. Even James Cameron acknowledges the power of this trope, as he has announced that Stephen Lang will be returning to play the good Colonel [[http://www.flickeringmyth.com/2013/10/james-cameron-confirms-stephen-lang.html in all three sequels]].
** It is especially notable that Mr. Lang was the first member of the original cast to be officially signed on for the sequels. Yes, even before Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, ''the main protagonists.''

Word cruft: recently.

Yet until recently, his was the longest and first section on [[Characters/{{Avatar}} the character sheet]].

Upon the release of the movie, he's considered one of the best things about it.

!!Works with their own pages
* ''EnsembleDarkHorse/StarWars''

!!Examples:
* Vasquez, and Hudson or maybe the colonial marines in general from ''Film/{{Aliens}}''.
** The original film has Jonesy the cat-- partially because of Jonesy's CuteKitten status, and partially because one of Ripley's main motivations is to save the station's cat. This got to the point where, when Ripley finally got her own action figure in 2015, it was even bigger news (to some) that she came with a Jonesy accessory.
* Jennifer Coolidge in ''Film/AmericanPie'' became an instant pop-culture icon--to the point where the word "MILF" is now in the Oxford English Dictionary--despite having ''less than five minutes'' of screen time!
** Steve Stifler himself, going from being a frenemy to the main quartet in the original, to TheFriendNobodyLikes in the sequel, and due to his BreakoutCharacter status, the protagonist and deuteragonist in the third and fourth films, respectively.
* It seems the only character everyone likes in ''Film/{{Annie 2014}}'' is Grace Farrell. The fact that she's played by Creator/RoseByrne has something to do with it.
Yet until recently, his was the longest and first section on [[Characters/{{Avatar}} the character sheet]]. Not to mention the only character to get his own listing.
* "Bob the Goon" from Creator/TimBurton's ''Film/{{Batman}}'', aided in no small part by his hilarious death scene. Toy Biz may have predicted this with the toyline: the only characters to get figures were Batman, SelfDemonstrating/TheJoker and Bob.
* "CIA" from ''Film/TheDarkKnightRises'', due to the scene he appears in being considerably [[MemeticMutation memetic]]. Barsad "The Masketta Man"/"The Mosquito Man" and "Brother" (the man who stays behind on the plane when it crashes after Bane tells him to) also have attracted popularity for similar reasons, but none quite as much as CIA.
* Jesus "The Jesus" Quintana from ''Film/TheBigLebowski''. Despite the fact that he's only in the movie [[OneSceneWonder for about five minutes]], he's nearly as popular as the main characters themselves. ''"Nobody fucks with The Jesus!"''
* Megan in ''{{Film/Bridesmaids}}''. Depicted in the trailers as being just TheLadette, she ends up being the most well-developed character in the film and her actress, Melissa [=McCarthy=] would get an Oscar nomination for the role.
* Missy Pantone from the original ''Film/BringItOn'', thanks to her memorable audition scene and for acting as the film's AudienceSurrogate to the world of cheerleading. Being played by Creator/ElizaDushku also helps.
* Yvette, the French girl who cries during the singing of "La Marseillaise" in ''{{Film/Casablanca}}''.
* The Djinn from the 2010 ''Film/{{Clash of the Titans|2010}}''. They save Perseus & Co. from the giant scorpions, not by defeating them, but by ''taming them''. One of them (credited as "Sheikh Suleiman") joins the quest to slay Medusa. As it turns out, since he is not a being of flesh, he is ''immune to her stare''. Wrapped in her coils, [[spoiler:[[TakingYouWithMe he uses his magic to self-destruct]], [[HeroicSacrifice providing Perseus the opening needed to decapitate her]]]].
** While we're on the subject, Hephaestus from the sequel ''Wrath of the Titans'' also qualifies. He's the only remotely funny character in the movie, [[LargeHam he's quite hammy]], he's CrazyAwesome, and he spends most of his time [[ItMakesSenseInContext getting into arguments with an owl figurine]]. Unfortunately, like Sheikh Suleiman, [[spoiler: he doesn't last very long and [[HeroicSacrifice he sacrifices his life to help Perseus]]]]. Did we mention he's portrayed by ''Bill Nighy''?
** Bobo from [[Film/ClashOfTheTitans1981 the original film]]; while the fanbase is divided about whether he is a good character or not, there is no denying he is one of the most talked about characters of the film.
* [=DeeJay=] & Zangief of ''Film/StreetFighter'' both have a lot of fans. [[MemeticMutation QUICK!]] [[Funny/StreetFighter CHANGE THE CHANNEL!]]
* Jean Reno's Victor 'The Cleaner' managed to become the most memorable character of the French (original) version of ''Film/{{Nikita}}'' with just a few minutes of screen time. His popularity led Luc Besson to make him the main character of his next movie, ''Leon'' (''Film/TheProfessional'').
* Music/LLCoolJ's character in ''Film/DeepBlueSea'' spends most of the movie alone, separated from the main cast, who never even seem to remember he's there. This makes one wonder if he was even originally intended to be in the movie, but eventually he turns out to be a lot more intelligent and probably more likable than the other characters. Apparently he was popular enough that the movie was rewritten to have him survive at the end.
* The most popular character in ''Film/{{Doomsday}}'' is undoubtedly the DarkActionGirl Viper, who has about maybe seven minutes of screentime and just one line. [[NeverTrustATrailer Trailers made it look like]] this sexy tattooed badass was going to be a major character, causing some disappointment when she's rather casually dispatched early in the film.
* The Elder Vampire has quite the fan following despite only appearing in a few scenes in ''Film/DraculaUntold'', courtesy of Creator/CharlesDance's charismatic performance.
* Kit in ''Failure to Launch''. She's the roommate of one of the leads, but is often considered the funniest and most likable character in the film. Being played by Creator/ZooeyDeschanel certainly doesn't hurt any.
* Han of the ''Film/TheFastAndTheFuriousTokyoDrift'', who proved to be such a popular character they basically rearranged the entire timeline of the franchise so he could appear in three more movies afterward.
* ''Film/FullMetalJacket''.
** Animal Mother, the SociopathicHero
** Also, RLeeErmey's character, DrillSergeantNasty Hartman. He was only in the first half of the film, but the way people go on about him, you'd be amazed that there's actually more to the film after the boot-camp arc. He also gets a lot of MisaimedFandom and DracoInLeatherPants treatment from fans.
* Just as in the comics, Snake-Eyes was the EnsembleDarkhorse for ''Film/GIJoeTheRiseOfCobra''. During test screenings, audiences were given cards to fill out, answering various questions about the film, including their favorite character. Despite the fact that he wasn't even listed as a choice (because he didn't have a speaking role), Snake consistently won as a write-in. All of the film's ads even featured him over the film's actual stars. ''Film/GIJoeRetaliation'' keeps Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Zartan, but also adds Firefly as well.
* ''Franchise/{{Godzilla}}'':
** Poor Anguirus - he crawls around on the ground, he's got no flashy beam-weapons, and whenever he appears you know it's just so ''Franchise/{{Godzilla}}'' or the new MonsterOfTheWeek can beat him up to show how tough they are. For this reason, a lot of fans who [[TheWoobie feel sorry for him]] name Anguirus as their favorite {{kaiju}}.
*** Just a punching bag? Anguirus nearly took down Gigan all on his own - which is no small feat, considering that Gigan is one of the few kaiju that is truly on-par with Godzilla himself.
*** Let's not forget that he was Godzilla's very first opponent and nearly won! Plus, as noted above, he matched Gigan and was one of the three kaiju who directly [[DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu kill one of King Ghidorah's heads]] in ''Film/DestroyAllMonsters.'' Punching bag my ass.
*** In the Mark Cerasi ''Godzilla'' novel series, Anguirus fights and defeats Gigan by himself, after the cyborg monster totally obliterates several Russian cities and new cosmodrome, and pulls him into the Baltic Sea to his death. Later on Anguirus twice battles the Russian-built super-robot MOGUERA and nearly wins both times (he is defeated, but merely sedated so he can be kept in an enclosure).
** Don't forget ''Film/GodzillaMothraKingGhidorahGiantMonstersAllOutAttack'' The movie features [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah]] and some other monster who appeared for five seconds in ''Film/DestroyAllMonsters'' and who doesn't even make it to the final showdown. Which just means little Baragon went up against Godzilla ''[[CrowningMomentOfAwesome all by himself!]]''
** Hell, nearly every Toho {{Kaiju}} is an EnsembleDarkhorse of one kind or another. The most notable examples besides Anguirus are: [[Film/GodzillaVsBiollante Biollante]], a gigantic rose/Godzilla/human hybrid that operates on sheer terror; Gorosaurus, the giant TyrannosaurusRex from ''Film/KingKongEscapes'' who got a CrowningMomentOfAwesome in ''Film/DestroyAllMonsters!'' (Heck, if fellow EnsembleDarkhorse Baragon's suit hadn't been so damaged, he might not have appeared at all!); and Mechagodzilla, Godzilla's HumongousMecha EvilTwin that always gives the King a run for his money.
** [[WhatCouldHaveBeen/{{Film}} BAGAN]]. The one Monster in the series that to this day is still no where to be seen except on one video game, but is one of the most powerful monsters in the series. Also being the only monster to force Godzilla to transform into a Superpowered state, ONLY for Bagan to not only SURVIVE the fight, but just be beamed away by the retreating aliens.
** In many ways, Series/ZoneFighter. Despite [[FollowTheLeader being a ripoff of Ultraman]], He is the only [[{{Toku}} Tokusatsu]] superhero to have teamed up with Godzilla (and vice versa). Thanks to the internet, many fans still hope to see him return alongside Godzilla to this day.
* ''Film/{{Godzilla 2014}}'':
** Joe Brody is considered to be the best human character in the movie, and to some, the franchise as a whole. Being played by Bryan Cranston probably has something to do with that. [[spoiler:The real reason he's listed as part of the ensemble is because he dies in the first half of the movie, but gives a memorable performance in that time.]]
** The nameless BadassDriver bus driver who not only passes through a military/police barricade, he ''drives like hell'' when Godzilla has an explosive skirmish with the military.
** Sergeant Morales has only three scenes but he is liked for being amicable and polite even in the face of danger.
* Both Sinestro and Tomar-Re from ''Film/GreenLantern'' are considered to be this by a good deal of people. It doesn't hurt that Sinestro already has an established fanbase carrying over from the comics, though Tomar-Re has developed a small following in [[UsefulNotes/FurryFandom other places]].
* Given that the series is often referred to as the "Franchise/HannibalLecter series" and the latter two books are named after him, it's easy to forget that Lecter was a supporting character in ''Red Dragon'' and ''Literature/TheSilenceOfTheLambs''. Creator/AnthonyHopkins' 16 minutes of screen time in TheFilmOfTheBook for ''[[Film/TheSilenceOfTheLambs Silence]]'' is the least of any Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar winner.
* It might surprise you to realize that Pinhead is actually the EnsembleDarkhorse of the ''Franchise/{{Hellraiser}}'' series. In [[Film/{{Hellraiser}} the first film]] he was only known as the 'Lead Cenobite', had very little actual screen time and wasn't even the main antagonist. He wasn't the villain in ''Film/HellboundHellraiserII'' either (he was actually ''killed'' by that film's BigBad) and it wasn't until [[Film/HellraiserIIIHellOnEarth the third film]] where he took center stage. Creator/CliveBarker himself said of Pinhead that "It quickly became clear to all of us that he had made a mark on the consciousness of the audience out of all proportion to his screen time."
* Ryan Evans of the ''Film/HighSchoolMusical'' series. In the first film, he seems to just be Sharpay's dumber, less bitchy, and AmbiguouslyGay twin. In the second film, however, he steps out of Sharpay's shadow, gets some much-needed CharacterDevelopment, and [[HiddenDepths is revealed to have mad baseball skillz]] in a [[HoYay hoyay-tastic duet with the lead's best friend]]. By the third film, he's the Wildcats' mascot and well-liked by everyone. When he's charged with the choreography of the "Senior Year" musical, he turns out to be so good at it that [[spoiler: the scouts sent from Julliard offer him a scholarship on opening night.]] [[MST3KMantra Please ignore how unlikely this would be in real life.]] Debates rage over among the fans whether Troy and Gabriella's relationship is [[WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway genuinely sweet]] or [[{{Glurge}} sickening]], whether Kelsi is adorable or annoying, whether Sharpay is grating or utterly fabulous - but no-one disagrees that Ryan is ''awesome''.
** Not only that, his actor is arguably the best singer, second best dancer and definitely the best with acting. In an interview, all the cast agreed Lucas was the most serious one of them and actually thought of character motivation, which is more then the writers seem to do, giving Ryan little quirks and realistic reactions to the insanity around him.
* ''Film/{{Hook}}'': [[BadButt Rufio]], leader of the Lost Boys. Ru-fi-OOOO!!!
* ''Film/{{Hostage}}'', from [[TheFilmOfTheBook the book of the same name]], has [[AxCrazy Marshall]] [[PsychoForHire "Mars" Krupcheck]].
* ''The Hunger Games'':
** ''Film/TheHungerGames'':
*** Curly Haired Constipated Fuck (aka the tribute from District 4). The reason for his popularity? His amazing head of red curls as well as his constipated look in the magazine shoot.
*** Seneca Crane, thanks to his BadassBeard.
** Cressida from ''Film/TheHungerGamesMockingjayPart1''. Being played by Creator/NatalieDormer helps.
** She only got one shot in the teaser trailer for ''Film/TheHungerGamesMockingjayPart2'', but Commander Lyme is already proving popular among fans, helped by the fact that she's played by Creator/GwendolineChristie. She ends up being a OneSceneWonder too, due to having a relatively minor role.
* ''{{Film/Inception}}''
** Tom Hardy's con-man-type character Eames is a definite case of this. He received a lot of buzz around the role, which, for an actor who was supposed to have gotten his big Hollywood break from ''Series/BandOfBrothers'' nearly a decade ago, is probably a relief at this point.
** Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Point Man Arthur is another case. A high percentage of fanworks made are focused on either character (whether paired with each other or not).
* ''Film/InglouriousBasterds''
** Sgt. Werner Rachtman has only one scene, in which his brains get bashed out with a baseball bat by Sgt. Donny Donowitz. Despite being a [[strike: Nazi]] German soldier, his refusal to sell out his countrymen, ''even to save his own life'', definitely made him a OneSceneWonder. This is probably because he falls into MyCountryRightOrWrong.
** Donowitz himself, even though [[spoiler: he doesn't survive to the end of the movie]]. Aside from his superb nickname ("The Bear Jew") and his muscles on top of muscles, Donny is just darkly comic enough to make the film bizarrely whimsical when it could have been an outright horror show. His [[{{Fauxreigner}} in-universe performance as "Antonio Margheritti"]] also helps.
** Though he has a larger role, [[TheStoic Sgt.]] [[TheQuietOne Hugo]] [[AxCrazy Stig]][[KnifeNut litz]] falls into this trope as well. He does little in the film's actual present timeframe, but he won people over by [[spoiler:murdering thirteen Nazis officers in a flashback]].
* Q, in the ''Film/JamesBond'' series. Not only because he provides the gadgets that save his life, but also his lab with all the other cool and deadly spy equipment and his grumpiness towards 007. So much so that his final scene in ''Film/TheWorldIsNotEnough'' is really moving knowing that you will never see him again
-->"I've always tried to teach you two things. One, never let them see you bleed; second, always have an escape plan."
* ''Film/JupiterAscending'':
** The two bounty hunters who go after Jupiter; there were probably many watching who wished the film could have been about ''them'' instead.
** Kalique has proven to be quite the darling on Website/{{Tumblr}}, having gained a small but vocal fanbase.
** Diomika Tsing, the no-nonsense Ageis ship captain who is also a reasonable authority figure.
** Jupiter's mother Aleksa, particularly for fans of Creator/MariaDoyleKennedy. Bonus points that she's the most tolerable of Jupiter's family and [[TheWoobie actually has a backstory]].
* Robert Muldoon and Roland Tembo are usually quite popular among the ''Franchise/JurassicPark'' fandom. {{Justified|Trope}}, as both are the OnlySaneMan and GreatWhiteHunter in their respective novel/movie. Not to mention that both are the ones in [[AuthorityEqualsAsskicking charge of the security of a lot of people]].
** Before the film, no one really knew what a ''Velociraptor'' was. After the film, however, they became THE go-to dinosaur, rivaling ''Tyrannosaurus rex'' in popularity.
** ''Dilophosaurus'', too. It only fully appears on-screen in the first movie and the original novel ([[spoiler: unless you count a hologram from ''Jurassic World'']]), but you'd never know that looking at the larger franchise: it's in every toyline and almost every video game. Being able to spit poison and having that freaky-cool frill certainly helps cement it's reputation as one of the most unique dinosaurs in the franchise.
* ''Film/JurassicWorld'' gives us a load of examples, mainly dinosaur ones. To no one's surprise, audiences fell in love with Owen's [[RaptorAttack raptor]] [[SiblingTeam pack]], but the standout is the ''Mosasaurus'' -- it's speculated that this film will do what the original 1993 movie did for the ''Velociraptor'' and really put the species firmly in the public interest. On the human side, Zara, played by the beautiful Creator/KatieMcGrath, has garnered a surprising amount of viewer love [[TheWoobie and sympathy]] for being the film's ButtMonkey and for [[spoiler:her truly horrific death at the hands of the ''Pteranadon'']]. Also of note is the so-called "[[http://d2nv22tjwik63z.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/scene-stealer.jpg Margarita Man]]", an unnamed park visitor who is seen briefly running for cover during [[spoiler:the flying dinosaur rampage]] [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments with a margarita cocktail in each hand]]. To top it off, he's played by Music/JimmyBuffett.
* Creator/MNightShyamalan put a [[StrawCritic film critic]] in ''Film/LadyInTheWater'' mainly so he could [[TakeThatCritics bash film critics]] for not liking ''Film/TheVillage''. A great many viewers felt this critic was the only likeable character in the film.
* Creator/JetLi in ''Film/LethalWeapon4'' was just so ''cool'' that he stole the movie. It ended up becoming his breakout role to American audiences.
** "He took your gun apart with just ONE DEFT MOVEMENT... how did he DO THAT?"
* In ''Film/{{Maleficent}}'' there was this one guy who was captain of the watch. Or the soldiers. He tries to talk some sense into the crazy king, who then yells at him. The favourable contrast to the crazy king earned him some fans. Who [[SlashFic ship him with Diaval]].
* [[Music/FlightOfTheConchords Bret Mackenzie]]'s character from ''Film/TheLordOfTheRings'' gained a very, very devoted following of fans. He first appeared as a silent background extra in ''The Fellowship of the Ring'' at the Council of Elrond scene, where fans noted his expression and named him [[http://www.figwitlives.net/oldsite/ Figwit]], which stands for "Frodo is great... who is that?" Creator/PeterJackson himself became aware of the "Figwit" phenomena, so he asked [=McKenzie=] back for ''The Return of the King'', where he got a little more prominent scene, with two lines and even a close-up. He even got some official merchandise as "Figwit" at that point. Then, when filming ''Film/TheHobbit'' ten years later, they asked him to come back ''again'', and even gave his character an on-screen name by retconning him as Lindir, a minor Elf in the Book of ''The Fellowship of the Ring''. This time around, he appeared in four different scenes, had several lines and plenty of screentime.
** Arwen -- the film [[ActionGirl slightly expands]] on [[AscendedExtra her role]], combining it with the most badass elements of Glorfindel, and bringing in most elements of the love story which Tolkien left to the appendices.
** Then there's Legolas, thanks to Orlando Bloom's portrayal of him.
* In ''[[Film/TheHobbit The Hobbit]]'' Trilogy...
** Gollum in the first film, for being creepy and hilarious.
** [[CanonImmigrant Radagast the Brown]], mostly thanks to his CrazyAwesome badassery, dealing with the giant spiders, the Nazgûl and the orcs with ease. (And among older fans, for being the Seventh Doctor in addition to the above.)
** Within the group of Dwarves, there is Bofur, in part because of his greater character development, and his CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming with Bilbo. It may also have something to do with him being played by the always charming James Nesbitt. He also has some of the best facial hair in the film, which is saying something in a film full of bearded men.
** Kíli and Fíli as well, enjoying a case of AdaptationalAttractiveness and a lot of screentime.
** Ori, for those that don't despise him. He's just adorable.
** Bifur, despite having a smaller role than any of the above characters, is quite popular on {{Tumblr}} (mainly because of his head injury).
** Thranduil. [[PrettyBoy Good grief, Thranduil]]. He even has a Fan Nickname: "Dwarf [[FantasticRacism Racist]] Party Dad".
** Bard's children are generally well-liked as well for being adorable, helping expand Bard's character and mostly because they surprisingly avert being TheLoad.
** From ''The Battle of the Five Armies'' comes Dáin Ironfoot, for being CrazyAwesome and the way he [[LargeHam devours the scenery]]. Not to mention riding a huge boar to battle, headbutting everyone to death, and his magnificent ScrewYouElves speech.
* The Black Knight from ''Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail'' is one of the most memorable characters in the entire movie, despite being a OneSceneWonder. Ditto for the Knights Who Say Ni and the French Taunter.
* While showing movies that would have faded into obscurity on their own, the hosts of ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000'' will sometimes find a favorite character in a generally-subpar film. Often, the fans agree.
** Dablone, the boisterous, laughing resistance leader from ''{{Film/Escape 2000}}''. Mike and the 'bots nickname him "Toblerone" and seriously begin to miss him when he is absent from a large chunk of the movie.
** Vadinho, the hulking Aztec from ''Film/PumaMan'', as described on the [[Quotes/EnsembleDarkhorse quotes page]].
** Phantom of Krankor from ''PrinceOfSpace''.
** "[[Film/ManosTheHandsOfFate I aM TORgo. I Take CARe oF THe pLaCE whILE the MASTer is awAY.]]"
** Megaweapon from ''Film/WarriorOfTheLostWorld''.
** Klein!
** Rowsdower!
* ''Film/{{Phantasm}}''
** Rocky and to a lesser extent Tim from ''Film/PhantasmIIILordOfTheDead''.
** Some would argue that Reggie is right up there with Inspector Clouseau and Pinhead as far as defining this trope goes. He's the balding ice cream salesman sidekick in the first film -- and the protagonist of the next three!
* The original ''Film/ThePinkPanther1963'' was designed as a star vehicle for Creator/DavidNiven as a charming gentleman thief. Unluckily for Niven, Creator/PeterSellers was cast as the thief's nemesis, the bumbling Inspector Clouseau, and ended up completely stealing the film. [[BreakoutCharacter Several other movies were made]] featuring Clouseau, and when the thief character returned, he was played by Christopher Plummer.
* Mac from ''Franchise/{{Predator}}'' is arguably the third most memorable character in the movie after Ahnold and the Predator himself.
** Blaine makes a fair case for himself as well. That portable minigun certainly helps.
* Inigo Montoya from ''Film/ThePrincessBride''. This statement says it all:
-->--''{{JustForFun/Hello}}, MyNameIsInigoMontoya. YouKilledMyFather, PrepareToDie.''
* The [[MauveShirt nameless chubby guy]] always sipping from a hip flask in Troma's ''Redneck Zombies'' is popular with fans of the film, despite never doing anything really relevant or [[TheVoiceless even speaking]]. Even his actor ("Bill Johnson" according to the DVD commentary) went uncredited. And yet fans love the "Always Drinking Guy."
* ''Film/RepoTheGeneticOpera''
** Grave-Robber's actually a fairly minor character, but fans ''adore'' him. Him being played by the incredible Terrance Zdunich doesn't exactly hurt matters.
** Pavi Largo could also be considered an example of this; he should be funny-but-creepy-as-hell, but he's played by Ogre, who makes the whole thing just too cute for words.
* The Tarman zombie from ''Film/TheReturnOfTheLivingDead'' seems to be rather popular amongst zombie movie fans. He has had a figurine made and people also like to make Tarman costumes.
* Wallace Wells in ''Film/ScottPilgrimVsTheWorld''.
* ''Film/{{Scream 4}}'' was the least successful film of the series by far, but just about everyone who's seen it declared Creator/HaydenPanettiere as Kirby the ''real'' FinalGirl.
** Both Dewey (all four films) and Randy (the first two and a cameo in the third) are really popular too. Dewey because of his awkward characteristics, and Randy for being the lovable GenreSavvy MetaGuy.
* Queen [[UsefulNotes/ElizabethI Elizabeth I]] in ''Film/ShakespeareInLove''. Eight minutes of screen time for Dame Judi Dench, and it wins her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar!
* Promotion for ''ComicBook/SinCity'' showcased major actors like Creator/BruceWillis and Creator/JessicaAlba. Marv, one of the more popular characters from the comics got a few seconds in the trailers, likely because he was hideous and played by a lesser-known actor, Creator/MickeyRourke (he hadn't made his comeback yet). Just look at the page image and find Marv on the movie poster. Fans of the film and critics focused most of their attention on Marv's character anyway. Comic fans and the filmmakers weren't surprised, though.
* ''Film/SpiderManTrilogy''
** Creator/JKSimmons absolutely stole every scene he was in as J. Jonah Jameson while [[LargeHam hamming it up like no other.]]
** Though minor, Creator/BruceCampbell's cameos were always memorable in each film. It's also worth noting that Campbell loves to credit himself for naming Spider-Man in the first film.
** Ursula, Peter's cute Russian neighbor with a fairly transparent crush on him. Despite being a character original to the films and never formally dating Peter, some fans actually prefer her as a love interest to Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane, who is something of an AdaptationalWimp in these films.
* Some supporting players in Film/TheThreeStooges shorts have sizable fan bases, especially Vernon Dent, Christine [=McIntyre=], and Emil Sitka.
* ''Film/{{Transformers}}'': Maggie and Glen, the systems analyst and the hacker who end uncovering the secrets behind the Transformers. Some fans felt they deserved their own movie.
* No one watching later entries in the ''Film/{{Tremors}}'' franchise, whether film sequels or TV series, would suspect that Burt Gummer was originally a supporting character.
* ''Film/{{Tron}}''
** Ram. A laid-back BadassUnintentional, BadassBookworm, and overall NiceGuy who just happened to fall in with the system's biggest badass and a displaced User. He was darkhorse enough to give his User (who was merely credited as "popcorn guy") a name and substantial role in the ''Flynn Lives'' ARG.
** Castor in ''Film/TronLegacy''. How can you not love a guy who plays air guitar on his cane in the middle of a BarBrawl?
** Likewise with [[ThoseTwoGuys the Club's nonchalant DJs]], whose only reaction to the BarBrawl is to [[SorryILeftTheBGMOn change the music to something more fast-paced]]. Being played by Music/DaftPunk [[AsHimself as an expy of their stage act]] was definitely a factor.
* Yuri Boyka from ''Film/UndisputedIILastManStanding''
** Gaga, the gangster who is Boyka's patron, also is quite adept at stealing the scenes he's in. Also, quite a few people think Andriago Silva, a UsefulNotes/{{Capoeira}} fighter played by Lateef Crowder in ''Film/UndisputedIIIRedemption'', should have had a much more prominent role than he did.
* Michael Jai White in ''Film/UniversalSoldierTheReturn''.
* [[Film/{{Downfall}} Bruno Ganz]] as Jurgen in ''Film/{{Unknown 2011}}'' steals the movie and swallows it whole for breakfast. With tea.
* In the ''Film/XMen'' movies:
** Nightcrawler is exceedingly popular amongst many, mostly due to the opening of the second film and the truly memorable scene he had. Its almost a tradition for him to be the most surprisingly popular character in every adaptation, but it's usually because he's FunPersonified. In the film, they played up his religious side, and downplayed his funny charmer side. While many would see this as a worsening, the simple fact he's so damn badass in that one scene makes up for it, and the fact that his scenes after that play up the TheWoobie factor to full effect.
*** Similarly, his father Azazel, who appears in the prequel ''Film/XMenFirstClass'', is also a rather popular character, due to being, basically, Nightcrawler with red skin. Sure beats his really lame comic version.
** Surprisingly, Cyclops has attracted a large group of fans. Due to being repeatedly screwed over by the directors and writers, many have taken to preferring him over [[SpotlightStealingSquad Wolverine]], a large flip from the comics. Many are wishing for his [[spoiler:death in 3 to be ignored or retconned, and with rumors that it's now in CanonDiscontinuity, many are happy]]. Considering this is the guy many hate for being 'boring', this is quite a feat. It helps that James Marsden, who plays Cyclops, is possibly the biggest X-Men fan in the main cast and ever enthusiastic about his role.
** Colossus shows up for a grand total of three minutes in ''Film/X2XMenUnited'', during which he saves Siryn from being kidnapped, armors up on-screen, beats the crap out of several soldiers and offers to help Wolverine. The character proved to be so popular with moviegoers and fans that he returned as one of the six team members (although several of his scenes were cut) who take part in the final battle in ''Film/XMenTheLastStand'', and gets a few badass action scenes in ''Film/XMenDaysOfFuturePast''. However, his appearance in ''Film/{{Deadpool}}'', where he has a larger role than all his previous films combined, may be his most popular yet, thanks to how hilariously Adorkable he is.
** Kitty Pryde a.k.a. Shadowcat became one in between the second and third movies - thanks to the character's appearance in the ''WesternAnimation/XMenEvolution'' cartoon. So her role is greatly expanded and she's widely thought as one of the better parts of ''Last Stand''. Being played by a pre-''{{Film/Juno}}'' Ellen Page helps too.
** Even though Toad only appeared in the first movie, he is very popular. This is mainly because he is tasked with taking out Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm by himself...and he utterly [[CurbStompBattle annihilates all three of them]]. [[WhatCouldHaveBeen Toad was supposed to appear in the second movie and have a fight scene with Nightcrawler, but these plans were scrapped due to conflicts in Ray Park's schedule]].
** ''Film/XMenOriginsWolverine'': Wade Wilson. Not [[InNameOnly Deadpool]], oh no, but critics and fans pretty much unanimously praised Creator/RyanReynolds as pre-experimented Wade Wilson; when the much TruerToTheText ''Film/{{Deadpool}}'' movie was ''[[DevelopmentHell finally]]'' made, it would have been ridiculous had they picked someone ''other'' than Reynolds to portray the title character.
** Despite his short amount of screen time, Gambit has been well-received.
** [[BadassAdorable Yu]][[TheLadette kio]] from ''Film/TheWolverine'' has acquired some remarkable popularity amongst the fanbase and movie audiences.
** ''Film/XMenDaysOfFuturePast'': Even with all the FandomRivalry shenanigans and costume grievances over Quicksilver, he ends up stealing the show when he's on screen.
*** Blink is one of the highlights of the movie because of her unique look and creative uses of her power in the action scenes. Most fans predicted this, since the character's comic counterpart is already a pretty big fan-favorite, and for the exact same reasons, no less.
** In ''Film/{{Deadpool}}'', Negasonic Teenage Warhead won plaudits for being an EmoTeen DeadpanSnarker who hilariously contrasts both [[PsychopathicManchild Deadpool]] and [[TheCape Colossus]], and can kick plenty of ass too. She's certainly already more popular than her original CListFodder comic book self.
* Given his tendency to show up as a OneSceneWonder Creator/ChristopherWalken ends up in this role frequently, and many of his longer performances qualify as well.
* [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Johnny]] from ''Film/{{Airplane}}'' and its sequel.
--> Well, first the Earth cooled, and then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, and died and turned into oil, and then the Arabs came, and they all bought Mercedes Benzes, and then Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it...
%%* [[Film/MeanGirls "Four for you, Glen Coco!]] [[MemeticMutation You go, Glen Coco!"]][[note]]And none for Gretchen Weiners, bye.[[/note]]
* In ''Film/{{Jumper}}'', most audiences believe that [[CrazyAwesome Griffin]] played by Jamie Bell was the ''true'' hero of the film and should have been the protagonist, wanting wangsty [[DesignatedHero David]] to quietly teleport out of his own movie.
** Due to his popularity even the author of the original novel ended up writing a spin-off [[CanonImmigrant based around him]]. This troper wouldn't say 'due to his popularity', given that said spin-off novel was written and published almost six months before the film came out! So, unless someone has a time machine.... (The real story is that the film company wanted a new book for a tie-in for the movie, but the author didn't want to write one featuring David, since the film made major changes from the original book. Thus, he decided to pick the secondary teleporter from the film, since that would center the tie-in book around a character who didn't exist in the previous Jumper books, making it clear to fans of the books that this was set in the 'movie universe' rather than that of the books.)
* ''Film/TheRockyHorrorPictureShow'' has Columbia, the BigBad's groupie. Fans usually see her as the most sympathetic character in the film, much moreso than [[DesignatedHero nominal heroes]] Brad ("ASSHOLE!") and Janet ("SLUT!").
* Jules Winnfield of ''Film/PulpFiction'' has emerged as the movie's most popular character. Being played by Samuel L. Jackson will do that.
* Doc Holiday, from ''Film/{{Tombstone}}''. A man dying of TB, he decides to gamble and get into gunfights, since he won't be living for much longer anyway.
* ''Film/PacificRim'': '''''Cherno Alpha''''', the Russian Jaeger, despite it and its pilots not getting a lot of focus in the film [[spoiler:and getting killed off]], has become a fan favorite across the fandom. Could be its unique head and that it apparently has [[ShockAndAwe Tesla-infused fists]]. Or because the Russian-designed Jaegers operate under the simple rule that either the Kaiju goes down or ''they'' do, preferably whilst taking the Kaiju [[TakingYouWithMe down with them]]. As such, they [[NoOSHACompliance don't come equipped]] with escape hatches. Cherno's pilots [[HappilyMarried Aleksis and]] [[BattleCouple Sasha]] [[HuskyRusskie Kaidanovsky]] have been the subject of much fanart. And it seems like [[http://jaegercon.tumblr.com/post/58032749716/jaegercon-interviews-guillermo-del-toro del Toro himself]] agrees with the Cherno love.
** Among the human characters is Tendo Choi, the {{Adorkable}} MissionControl engineer behind the Shatterdome operation who looks like the secret love child of Creator/JosephGordonLevitt, [[Film/TheAdventuresOfBuckarooBanzaiAcrossThe8thDimension Buckaroo Banzai]] and [[Series/DoctorWho The Eleventh Doctor]]. Oldschool mecha anime fans like Tendo because he looks like a Go Nagai character.
** And of course there's [[CrazyAwesome Hannibal Chau]]...
** Newt's quite popular as well, the little {{Keet}}!
* Red from ''Film/TheLoneRanger'', mainly for her ivory leg ''with a gun in it''.
* Hit-Girl from ''Film/KickAss''.
* ''Film/ManOfSteel'':
** Faora has received a surprisingly large amount of positive fan attention considering her status as a tertiary character who has few lines or screen time. However, she offers one of the best fight scenes in the movie and is arguably more of a badass than either Superman or Zod, leaving everyone raving over her. Which is a great stroke of luck for her actress, [[http://herocomplex.latimes.com/movies/man-of-steel-flew-in-just-in-time-for-antje-traue/#/0 considering she was considering quitting acting]].
** Colonel Hardy for having the biggest balls to start a knife fight with Faora despite being severely outmatched. He even quips a PreMortemOneLiner [[spoiler:before doing a suicide run into Zod's ship, sending her and himself into the Phantom Zone.]]
* Spider from ''Film/{{Elysium}}'', whose fast talking antics and his determination as a badass make him very charismatic.
* ''Film/PainAndGain'':
** Ed [=DuBois=], the only heroic character in the movie and is much more likable in the movie than Lugo himself.
** Paul Doyle, for being a tragic AntiVillain that didn't want any part and [[spoiler:gets redeemed by the end after all his troubles.]] Wrestling/DwayneJohnson portrays that quite well in the movie.
* [[NoNameGiven The Wizard in the Leaky Cauldron]] from ''Film/HarryPotterAndThePrisonerOfAzkaban'' only has roughly ten seconds of screen time. During those ten seconds, he's seen reading Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" (which covers things like the beginning of the universe, black holes, and thermodynamics) while stirring his tea with wandless magic. So not only is he a complete genius, he'd have to be one of the most skilled magic users in the world.
* Both Justin Long and Fred Willard's characters in ''Film/YouthInRevolt'' as well as just about any of the reputable character actors with smaller supporting roles.
* Despite ''Film/{{Neighbors 2014}}'' being pitched as Rogen vs. Efron, most critical reviews -- even the negative ones -- heaped the most praise on Rose Byrne's Kelly, who doesn't get stuck with a WomenAreWiser role and gets a lot of laughs going from button-downed house-wife to scheming partner-in-crime with Mac. Plus, she does a hilarious {{Keet}} impression of Creator/AnneHathaway.
* Bernard in the first two movies in ''Film/TheSantaClause'' trilogy, for being a funny sarcastic elf. His disappearance in the third movie certainly didn't help its reception.
* An almost absurd case in ''Film/{{Scrooge 1951}}''. At the end of the film Scrooge goes to dinner at his nephew's house. The maid that takes his coat and sweetly urges him to go inside to the party. She has no lines and that's her only scene - and yet has a huge amount of fans. There was even a lengthy discussion on IMDB about the identity of the actress (even with theories that it was a young Audrey Hepburn). She was [[http://dickensblog.typepad.com/dickensblog/2013/05/meet-the-maid-an-interview-with-theresa-derrington-cozens-hardy.html eventually identified as Teresa Derrington]].
* ''Film/MadMaxFuryRoad''
** Nux. Mostly for Nicholas Hoult giving us a funny and [[LargeHam hamtastic]] - "[[MemeticMutation OH WHAT A DAY! WHAT A LOVELY DAY!]]" - performance, his [[BadassDriver driving skills]], his [[WalkingShirtlessScene lack of a shirt]] and [[spoiler:his HeelFaceTurn and HeroicSacrifice.]]
** The [[ThePowerOfRock Coma Doof Warrior]]. Battle rages around him, cars blow sky high, adrenaline-pumped warriors fight to the death on his stage, and what does he do? He [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsirxA_cso4 keeps on a-shreddin']] his kick-ass ''[[RuleOfCool flamethrower-guitar]]'', that's what he does!
* Both "Doggie" - the pug that is lovingly referred to as such by Johnny at the flower shop, The Football and Chris-R seem to be considered the only good actors in the film, but that is not really saying much.
** [[OnlySaneMan Peter, the psychologist,]] is this in several circles, giving some solid (and sadly ignored) advice partway through the film, and then [[ChuckCunninghamSyndrome disappearing during the finale]] because of his actor leaving the film after the filming of the "football in tuxes" scene. His character's last line? [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere "That's it, I'm done."]] Some people even make him into a bit of an AudienceSurrogate.
* In ''Film/TheThing2011'', Lars became a fan-favorite character for his badassery, being one of the more memorable characters in the otherwise [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter underutilized]] Thule Station team, his no-nonsense approach to fighting the Thing, and [[spoiler: his status as a walking reference to the [[Film/TheThing1982 original film]] - at the end, he's revealed to be the Norwegian who the American team encounters trying to kill the Dog-Thing]]. When the fan site Outpost 31 ran a poll on favorite characters from the movie, Lars received more than half the votes, beating out the actual main characters by a considerable margin. Even some people who disliked the movie cited him as one of its bright spots.
