Online retailer Amazon.com announced in 2010 that it would start providing original television shows and movies. Thus '''Amazon Studios''' was born, with content distributed through Amazon Prime.

Unusually, for a content provider, Amazon uses a crowdsourcing approval process to determine what gets produced. Scripts are submitted online and are reviewed by staff and site users before some are then greenlit for pilot production. The pilots are then provided for free on Amazon Prime, where viewers get to vote on which ones they'd like to see get ordered to series.

Critical and popular response towards Amazon's shows has been mixed (the most common complaint is that plots often don't move forward), despite the fact that they are produced based on a fan vote. There have been a few standouts, though. ''Series/{{Transparent}}'' made history when it became the first show from an online streaming service to win the Golden Globe for Best Series and Jeffery Tambor won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Tambor would go on to win an Emmy for his performance as well.

Amazon's kids' shows seem to be having the most success, with Annedroids, Creative Galaxy, Gortimer Gibbon and Tumble Leaf all getting second runs.

Breaking away from their pilot-testing model, ''Crisis in Six Scenes'', a series made by Creator/WoodyAllen has been ordered and is scheduled to premiere in 2016, with Allen directing and writing all episodes of the show. They also rescued ''Series/RipperStreet'' from cancellation, and are also moving into film production, helping to finance ''Chi-Raq'' for Creator/SpikeLee and [[Main/DevelopmentHell The Man Who Killed Don Quixote]] for Creator/TerryGilliam. They also paid a pretty penny for three series of ''Series/TheGrandTour'', a show starring the former presenters of the BBC car series ''Series/TopGear''.
