* CoolLoser: She is a NiceGirl with a great sense of humor, but she doesn’t like any of the same stuff the cool kids do, so they shun her, write “We Hate You” on her locker, and even refuse to come to Evan’s party if she attends.

* GirlNextDoor: Literally and figuratively, as she is the NiceGirl and CoolLoser living next door to Evan’s new house.

* TheCheerleader: Downplayed. She is head cheerleader, and acts nice most of the time, but still cheers when Evan humiliates Patrice and rejects Archie for Brett even after the jerk disses her.

* TheCheerleader: On the squad with Kendra and the other popular girls, bad to the bone.

* BastardGirlfriend: Once she and Brett start dating, she is really nasty to him, keeping him away from his friends and getting easily jealous.

* SugarAndIcePersonality: Towards Patrice. He tries to remain friends with her, but his drive to be accepted by the popular kids makes him do some pretty mean things to her.

* DawsonCasting: Subverted. Evan Rachel Wood was 15 during filming, while the rest of the child cast members were between ages 13 and 14. She is even older than Brady Corbet who played Mason, her older brother.
* DisappearedDad: Melanie and her husband divorced sometime before the film, and he doesn't seem interested in his former family at all. Tracy blatantly reminds him of this by stating "Dad, do you even remember what the last thing we did together was?", to which he responds by taking a phone call, and calling her a "client", and walking away.
* DrugsAreBad: Tracy desperately wants to be popular, and will do anything to gain popularity, including hardcore drugs. By the end of the film, she realizes the damaging affects that the drugs have done to her, and her family.
** Ironically, she despises her mother's boyfriend for being a recovering addict.
* EtTuBrute: Tracy has this reaction by the end of the film, after she realized Evie told Melanie and Brooke about their "hiding places" for their drugs and stolen money. Tracy gets all the blame, while Evie gets off somewhat scottfree.
* EvilFormerFriend: Tracy's friends, Noel and Yumi may see her as this.
* FishOutOfWater: Tracy is this when she first decides to take the bus to Melrose, and go "shopping" with Evie and Astrid.

* OddCouple: Subverted. Tracy and Evie seem like this at first, but by the middle of the film, they are best friends.

* SelfHarm: Tracy cuts her arm with a razor as a way to deal with all the stress in her life. You can tell she started cutting before the events of the film, because she constantly wears a sweatband on her wrist, and long sleeves, long before she befriends Evie.
* SexAsRiteOfPassage: After Tracy has sex with Javi, Evie seems to fully accept her into her group of friends.
* SmokingIsCool: Even before she forms a friendship with Evie, Tracy begins to smoke one of her mom's cigarettes to look cool.

* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: She thanks Archie for being nice to her after Brett dumps her in front of her friends, and kisses him on the cheek. But then she realizes that she’s surrounded by losers, and goes running back to Brett.
