* KickTheSonOfABitch: When coming across Konishi and Sho on the brink of Erasure, he lets out some rather scathing remarks and even an IncrediblyLamePun when it comes to Sho. While this would come across as cruel, the two Reapers in question have repeatedly shown themselves to be unrepentant and cruel when it comes to their various actions, making Neku's mockery of them come across as rather cathartic.

* NotSoDifferentremark:

** The Darklit Planet pins. If all six are put in one deck, their attack power triples and they become some of the deadliest pins in the game. However, [[spoiler:Hanekoma]] only sells you one of the six pins, and you have to find the rest either by defeating rare and powerful Noise on the highest difficulty and getting the pins from random drops, or using Mingle shops. [[spoiler:Angels help you if you can't find the one that comes off of [[BonusBoss Panthera Cantus]].]]

* {{Bishonen}}: As a Creator/SquareEnix protagonist, it’s to be expected. His handsome looks are regularly noted on by the various shopkeepers that end up [[ChickMagnet attracted to him.]]

* BladeBelowTheShoulder: How his [[BladeSpam Shockwave]], [[BladeOnAStick Lance Lunge, and Spear Strike]] psychs are manifested, with a large blade of energy covering his arm for close-ranged combat.

* DefrostingIceQueen: Starts off cold and uncaring about people in general. His character arc revolves around him getting out of that mindset and opening up to people.

* NotGoodWithPeople: And how. He openly states in the beginning that he doesn’t want to open up to people ever and constantly rejects others’ attempts at getting him to connect with them. Later on, he outgrows this and truly starts to open up to his partners.

* JerkToNiceGuyPlot: [[spoiler:Invoked by the game itself. The entire point of the current Reaper’s Game that Neku finds himself in was due to [[PhysicalGod Joshua]] and [[WellIntentionedExtremist Kitaniji]] making a wager over whether or not Shibuya and its people deserve to continue existing, with Neku playing a large role as the representative of what Joshua hates about Shibuya; a selfish, anti-social JerkAss who had no regard for anyone but himself. If even a selfish loner like Neku could change for the better, then perhaps Shibuya isn’t so lost after all.]]

* TookALevelInKindness: Throughout the course of the game, Neku massively changes for the better, turning from a self-absorbed {{Jerkass}} who couldn’t give two craps about others into a genuine hero who comes to care for other people.

* OppositesAttract: How his friendship with Shiki functions. Neku is a [[DeadpanSnarker sarcastic]], [[NoSocialSkills asocial]] JerkWithAHeartOfGold with a penchant for being [[BrutalHonesty brutally honest]] and [[StepfordSnarker covering up his insecurities and inner turmoil with tons of snark]] whereas Shiki is a [[ShrinkingViolet insecure]], [[TheChick socially aware]] NiceGirl who tries to [[StepfordSmiler cover up her insecurities and inner turmoil with smiles and laughter.]] After they go through several trials together, this dynamic actually ends up helping them both grow as people, with Neku helping Shiki to learn to value her true self and Shiki helping Neku to learn how to value other people.

* WeaponOfChoice: He can use any pin in the game, but his favorite clothing brand is Jupiter of the Monkey, which specializes in casual athletic wear. He also has an affinity for the mysterious Gatito label, which is known for its frequent collaborations with CAT.

* GrumpyBear: Is incredibly cynical, pessimistic, and jaded at the start of the game, especially when compared to his more outgoing partners. However, he eventually outgrows this as the story progresses.

* EverythingsBetterWithSpinning: The Vortex Saber psych, which has him spinning a {{BFS}} around him in order to strike foes.
