A (former) [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3 Spike]] who first appears in part one of the "Seaside Stupidity" two-parter. After his debut, he made a few more appearances before finally graduating to main character status. At the end of the Lawsuit Arc, Miyamoto transforms him into a different form to stop his name being associated with Spikes. Five months later, he was redesigned again right in the announcement video for "It's Gotta Be Perfect" in response to fan complaints.

* AdorableAbomination: He may look like an ordinary Spike, but his father being a massive Cthulhu-like sea monster does question if he is a Spike. As of WOTFI 2022, he's definitely not a Spike anymore.

** Despite the fact that he has an obsession with anime girls, and the whole reason he created Saiko was because he wanted a real life waifu, in "I Can't Believe It's Not [=SMG4=]", after Bob says that the play that Mario is in reminds him of his rapping career, Boopkins says in a romantic voice "Aw, been there Bob, you'll always be a star in my eyes", Bob responds by asking Boopkins if he's gay.
** He's also the only one who wasn't disgusted by [=SMG4's=] [[ItMakesSenseInContext offer of love]] in "The Mario Hustle".
* [[AmbiguouslyHuman Ambiguously Spike]]: Boopkins used the model of a Spike for six years, but his father is a giant [[EldritchAbomination Cthuhlu-like sea-monster]] who laid an egg that turned into Boopkins' brother. Said brother looks more like a tiny bird than either Boopkins or their father, which opens up a few questions. Notably, Boopkins is rarely if ever referred to as a Spike, with the only implications beyond his appearance being him puking spike-balls. A mock nature documentary titles his species as "Fishy Boopkins". Any ambiguity is dropped after his post-WOTFI 2022 redesign.
* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: [[spoiler:He is unceremoniously caught and infected by [[ArcVillain Waluigi]] at the end of "Fishy Boopkins Plays [=VRChat=]"]].
* ArtEvolution: In response to fan backlash, Boopkins' redesign was modified as of "It's Gotta Be Perfect". He now has proportions closer to his original Spike design, as well as more fish-like features such as gills. * ButtMonkey: Slips into this role as time goes on, taking the brunt of insults and abuse from most of the cast. The mock nature documentary provides the the quote underneath his picture.
* CartoonCreature: His appearance as of WOTFI 2022. His second redesign heavily downplays this, making him more clearly fish-like in appearance and giving him a body structure similar to his original design.
* CastingGag: There are a few references to him being played by [=SMG4=]/Luke's brother, Kevin. The "Poppy Playtime" video has credits that say he produced the video, and he's featured in [=SMG4=]'s mind acting out a Hobo Bros video with him in the place of Kevin, normal voice and all.

* DirtyCoward: During "Mario Preschool", the [[ItMakesJustAsMuchSenseInContext Shipping Police]] show up to try and arrest him, and in a move not out of place from [[ItsAllAboutMe Bob]], he frames Meggy for the picture he drew of him and Hatsune Miku leaving her to be arrested by the Shipping Police. Granted, [[RewardedAsATraitorDeserves Fishy Boopkins]] does end up getting arrested too, [[NeverMyFault but thinks it's because they didn't like his painting.]]

For better or worse, it's his most prominent character trait aside for his love for anime.
* {{Flanderization}}: As of "High School Mario" the anime-obsessed weaboo side of his personality has become his primary and near-only character trait.
* {{Foil}}: To Bob. Both are based on enemy mooks, both are among the few characters that use voice acting (even if Bob's voice is text-to-speech). Both are TheFriendNobodyLikes from the rest of the cast and are shown to be losers. But the differences are that Fishy Boopkins is a WideEyedIdealist who's humble, doesn't really let the abuse get to him, and is a nice person; while Bob is cynical, [[SmallNameBigEgo has a huge ego]], cares deeply what other people think of him, and is a {{Jerkass}}.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: In his debut appearance, Fishy Boopkins had magical powers including the power to summon other sea creatures, swallow large amounts of objects a la VideoGame/PacMan, and allow humans and Toads to breathe underwater. After that two-parter, Boopkins isn't shown to have any powers unless one counts his [[BrownNote horrendous singing]]. ''May'' have given Meggy the ability to breathe underwater in "If Mario Went Fishing".
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Boopkins was initially characterized as a pathetic loser who was mocked or looked down on by those around him. Fortunately, this angle was dropped relatively quickly as the series started making him EndearinglyDorky rather than an outright dork.
* {{Hermaphrodite}}: [[RuleOfFunny Possibly]]. After getting blasted out of the school in "High School Mario", he mutters "[[GroinAttack My nuts]].", despite a line in "Stupid Mario Kart" stating he had a uterus.

** Boopkins considers Bob to be his best friend, and is willing to help him despite all the times Bob has either a)been the cause of his own misfortune, b) mistreated him and c) betrayed his trust. It comes back to bite him ''hard'' in "The Mario Concert" when Bob [[spoiler: reveals that he never considered Boopkins his friend and that he was the one that pushed Boopkins down the well, all so he could use Boopkins' rescue as a publicity stunt to further his rap career. To be fair to Boopkins on this point, he does wise up afterwards and Bob has to really prove to him that he's changed before they're friends again.]]
** In "Doki Doki Mario Club" he's ignorant at first to Saiko's true nature and even after seeing her at her worst he's very hesitant about breaking off his relationship with her until Toad and Toadette provide a demonstration of what will happen if he doesn't.
** In "Mario and the T-Pose Virus", [[spoiler:he greets his zombified friends and asks if they want to play Yu-Gi-Oh cards, to which they respond by painfully mobbing him and infecting him.]]
* ImmuneToFire: Is shown to be this in "The Floor Is Lava", where the lava actually makes him ''stronger''. This may have been a {{retcon}} since he was shown to be hurt by fire in some of his previous appearances.
* KidHasAPoint:
** When [[spoiler:Meggy gets kidnapped]] in "The Splatfest Incident" and Axol is the prime suspect, Boopkins has a good reason to vouch for Axol's innocence. Not only does Axol have a friendly if overdramatic personality, but he willfully helped Mario and Co. get anime unbanned while demanding ''nothing'' in return. ** From the same episode, he was the first one to stop the CivilWar from progressing any further when they could be [[spoiler:saving Meggy]].

A female [[Franchise/{{Splatoon}} Inkling]] that Mario found stuck in a paint bucket, causing her to run amok and flee into a manhole that leads to Inkopolis, taking Mario along with her. She originally competed in Turf War tournaments with her team, the [=SplatSquad=], but a series of events eventually resulted in her permanent transformation into a human. She was very popular in her debut episode and quickly became the series' biggest BreakoutCharacter, becoming a series regular after returning for "MARIO'S CHALLENGE" and eventually the full-on {{Deuteragonist}} of the modern era.\\\

The one that showed the most promise was being a police officer, but it was never followed up on for reasons still unexplained, though fans have speculated it might have something to do with the backlash against police brutality happening in the USA at the time. [[spoiler:Melony has the power of the Fierce Deity Mask and is probably the strongest of the main cast, but by the time she reaches Axol, Zero's possession is too deep rooted. Her sword just impotently bounces off as she tries in vain to hack him free. In the end, all she can do to free Axol from the possession is MercyKill him]].
* ProneToTears: Melony is prone to childish crying when things don't work out for her, although she slowly grows out of this, [[spoiler:which makes her true grief at Axol's death all the more heartbreaking as she hysterically sobs.]]
* TheQuietOne: She's fully capable of speech as a human, espcially when she is the focused character in a video, but still doesn't talk much.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Downplayed. Her human form has red eyes (because watermelon) and she wields the powers of a god, but is almost heartbreakingly innocent. Her Fierce Deity form has white pupils with black sclerae.
* ReplacementGoldfish: Shortly after [[spoiler:Axol's death]], Mario wished her to have a pet axolotl in "If Mario Was In… Nickelodeon". Although she has no clue where it came from, she appreciates the gift, named it "Axol Junior", and is seen with it in subsequent episodes.
* SleepyHead: Her human self seems to spend most of her time not involved in antics asleep.
* SuddenlySpeaking: Downplayed in "Mario's Mask of Madness" where her only spoken word is 'No'. "The Melony Felony" features the first notable sentences from her… but they're an odd mishmash of English clips from Japanese [=VTubers=] (notably [[Characters/HololiveJapanGAMERS Korone Inugami]], whose voice is used for the nightclub scene) and Wolfychu's custom lines – this episode is where she says Axol's name for the first time.
** "WHAT IF…?" is a more straight example, as she has the most lines of dialogue (fully-voiced, at that) out of any episode, even telling an entire story in one segment. Starting with "The Final Piece", she consistently speaks in full sentences and continues to do so after the Genesis Arc even though her sentences aren't always fully voiced. This is evidently due to the difficulty of getting Wolfychu in to record on short notice, as she's said publicly several times she adores Melony and enjoys voicing her.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: As it turns out, what we've seen from her prior to "To Become A God" was only a fraction of her power. Allowing her entire personality to be hijacked by the Fierce Deity Mask brings out her full potential at the cost of her compassion and the ability to reason. She learns to control it later on.
* TalkingToPlants: "Mario Goes To College" implies she can talk to fruit. She ''is'' a watermelon, after all.
* TerseTalker: Her human form rarely spoke outside of single-word sentences early on. [[SuddenlySpeaking This changed]] later on.
* UnskilledButStrong: She may have the powers of the Fierce Deity, but proves to be very incompetent without them.
* UnwittingPawn: By learning to control her deity powers, [[spoiler:it gave Niles a head start when he finally possessed her]].
* WardrobeFlawOfCharacterisation: Wears socks but no shoes for some reason. Turns out that they simply forgot to give her shoes and Kevin didn't notice until reacting to her human debut.
* WomanChild: As a humanoid girl (especially in "The Melony Felony"), she is shown to be very childish and immature, such as crying like a baby at times, pouting at Axol after his "special" where he "kills" Melon-kun, not knowing the concept of drinking booze, and folding the instructions on how to make a bed into a paper hat. This proves to be a problem when she's trying to learn to control her Fierce Deity powers.
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: Tapping into her full power (allowing the Fierce Deity to [[DemonicPossession possess her]]) results in Melony destroying anything that reminds her of Zero along with anything that tries to get in her way, plus becoming [[TheStoic almost completely emotionless]] in the process. She gets better at controlling her power later on, but there are still occasions where she will come close to killing her friends if they provoke her, particularly when [=SMG3=] gets greedy and threatens Mario for "unlimited power". By the end of the Revelations Arc, she has full control over her abilities.

They both share some similarities, being two young {{Delinquent}}s with demonic influences in high school and college, respectively, looking for trouble and causing problems for the [=SMG4=] crew. In addition, they get into girls' heads ([[spoiler:literally in Niles' case]]) in order to achieve their dreams, which both happen to involve reliving their glory days. But with that said, there are many differences between them in terms of appearances, relationships, actions, and ultimate fates. [[spoiler:For starters, Kaizo can interact with the [=SMG4=] crew fine, but Niles, while he was in Melony's mind, doesn't do so until near the end. While they are both OlderThanTheyLook, Niles is an ageless being that existed long before the [=SMG4=] series began, whereas Kaizo is a RefugeeFromTVLand that's been in a video game for who knows how long. More importantly, while both of their endgoals mean going back to the old days, Niles wants to create the "perfect" universe with [=SMG0=], whereas Kaizo just wants to cause destruction for the sake of it. After the girls they manipulated break free from their influence, Niles attempts to kill Melony as Zero, while Kaizo simply breaks off his friendship with Saiko and tries to get into a band without her help. And finally, while Niles is too far gone and dies before he gets the chance to right the wrongs he did, Kaizo ultimately reconciles with Saiko and agrees to reform KS-2 the right way.]]

This is especially noticeable in WOTFI 2022, where he voices his desire to participate in the challenges, but doesn't show up in even one, yet is one of the exhausted jurors seen in the rap battle's intro.
* PsychopathicManchild: He has a very immature idea of what constitutes as "cool" – namely heavy metal, swords, [[BreadEggsMilkSquick and illegal shit]].
