* GrowingUpSucks: Steven's CharacterDevelopment tends to skew this way. He starts off as a naive child who just wants to join in on the missions and be considered a full Crystal Gem. Slowly he gets his wish, but with great physical and emotional pain. He goes from seeing his mother as a great unbelievably perfect person to someone flawed and whose past he himself has to keep dealing with. When his powers first manifest it was a great and exciting time, but the slowly changed into annoyance and self-deprecation as his control of them never seemed to get better.

* ForWantOfANail: There is at least one timeline where he died, according to [[Recap/StevenUniverseS1E22StevenAndTheStevens "Steven and the Stevens"]]. It's only because the original timeline Steven had a JerkassRealization that it never came to fruition.

* TheOneGuy: Because Steven is half human and half Gem, not only is he the sole male Gem, he’s also the only Gem with a biological sex whereas while all the Gems shown have female identities, they’re all sexless.

** He seems to be acquiring more and more of these throughout ''Future''. It's eventually revealed that [[spoiler: suffering several near death experiences as a child has given him [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome Post Traumatic Stress Disorder]].]]

** Of the AllLovingHero — Steven is a kind kid who tries to befriend everyone he meets. The show never says that Steven's wrong to have these beliefs (and nobody InUniverse attempts to discourage it), but they do run into [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome very realistic flaws]]. Long story short, Steven's optimism and willingness to see the best in everyone is one of his best virtues, but just like everybody else on the show, he's still a flawed character.

* ItsAllAboutMe: A much less self-centered version of this trope than normal. Most of the events in the main series really did revolve around him[[note]] Of which Reynaldo voiced his displeasure of in [[Recap/StevenUniverseS1E31KeepBeachCityWeird "Keep Beach City Weird"]] [[/note]]. In ''Future'', when all events finally stop revolving around him and everybody starts moving on with their own lives, [[DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife he has no idea what to do with his own]].

* TheOneGuy: Because Steven is half human and half Gem, not only is the sole male Gem, he’s also the only Gem with a biological sex whereas while all the Gems shown have female identities, they’re all sexless.

* BellyButtonless: Despite being the only Gem who potentially could have a belly button, he still doesn't, with his gemstone being in the place it would be.

* MakeMeWannaShout: The only ability Steven uses in this state is a screech, powerful enough to knock over all three of the Diamonds and their ship, dispel Lapis's water chains, and even force Garnet to defuse (if only for a moment).

* HealingFactor: "Growing Pains" shows that while they apparently healed quickly enough not to bother him much, he received several bone fractures over the course of the show.

* TheHero: Steven is the main protagonist and often saves the world on a daily basis.

* TheSpook: Steven's medical form in "Growing Pains" lists his social security number as "N/A", implying his birth was undocumented. He presumably still has a driver's license, though.

** In [[Recap/StevenUniverseS2E20SadiesSong "Sadie's Song"]], he performs at Beachapalooza while wearing make-up, high heels and a very feminine dress that shows off his belly button. He not only pulls it off, [[HundredPercentAdorationRating nobody in the audience]] makes fun of his style or even bats an eye, and the only comment about his appearance is Nanefua telling Kiki that the "Special Mystery Guest" gimmick [[LargeHam had Steven written all over it]]. The only other comment they make is noting it's better than when [[NoodleIncident he did it]] ''[[NoodleIncident nude]]'' [[NoodleIncident two years prior]].

* HasTwoMommies: While Greg helps out, Steven is primarily raised by the three Gems. During [[Recap/StevenUniverseS2E26StevensBirthday "Steven's Birthday"]], it is shown though that Steven grew up initially with only his dad as a single parent. The extended intro for Season 2 shows that Greg gave the full responsibility of raising Steven to the Gems when he was somewhere between 10 and 13. The complicated family situation is really highlighted in [[Recap/StevenUniverseS1E32FusionCuisine "Fusion Cuisine"]], where Connie is terrified that her parents won't accept Steven because his family isn't a nuclear one, [[ComicallyMissingThePoint so all the Gems decide to fuse into one giant mom]].
** Also, metaphorically true after he discovers [[spoiler:that his mother, Rose Quartz, is none other than '''Pink Diamond''']]

* BareYourMidriff: Steven's gem is located in his navel. His shirt is often lifted, damaged, or removed to draw attention to this fact.

** In ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverseFuture'', after he pricks his finger, he brings Cactus Steven into existence after putting healing saliva on his finger and touching a cactus

* LoveYouAndEverybody: After Steven first meets Connie, Amethyst teases him because he likes her. Steven protests that he likes everybody. PlayedForLaughs whenever he casually inserts himself within Lars and Sadie's relationship, even when [[JustFriends there arguably isn't a relationship there in the first place]].
