However, it could be argued that his family's physical and emotional abuse for being "weak", combined with living the rest of his childhood with the hard-handed yet well-meaning Zeff, caused Sanji's innocent compassion to whittle away until he's mostly left with jade-colored glasses.

* BelatedBackstory: For the longest time, Sanji was just Sanji, much like Nami is just Nami, and the fandom began to think the author had nothing up his sleeve beyond that -- he was Sanji, and that was it. No one really expected anything more past that because his initial backstory was deceptively intricate enough as is, but two things burned at people's minds -- he was the only Straw Hat without a personal death under his belt, and he revealed he was not native to the East Blue. Turns out he's kept mum about his surname Vinsmoke and all the bad memories associated with it, [[spoiler:because his own father specifically told him to never mention them, and indeed, it included the memory of a late mother dying for his sake.]] It just took a certain interest in his familial background to open the can of worms.
