* AdaptationalVillainy: The Genie was a good guy in the original story. Here, he starts out as this, but is blinded by his love for Regina and commits murder for her.

* KarmaHoudini: Even though he has killed to try and make Charming suffer, he never seems to get the punishment he deserves. In Season 6, we learn this was subverted and he has been in the asylum / jail since "Child of the Moon".

* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: Season 4 reveals that even his loyalty to Regina has its limits. After spending the past several months locked up in the asylum after taking the fall for her in regards to Katherine's kidnapping, he attempts to reassert himself as someone she considers more than a pawn when she frees him. However, after she imprisons him in a mirror again and continually threatens to have him re-committed should he not comply, he finally sells her out to Ingrid on the promise that she free him (which she actually made good on).

* ActorAllusion: He has dyed his hair platinum by the Season 5 episode 'Birth'; possibly more of a RealLifeWritesThePlot as this is due to his role on ''Series/IZombie''. However, Zelena noting that she thought he was dead (his character on the other show is a revenant) definitely counts.

* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: Whale manages to walk around with his arm ''ripped off'' with nothing worse than a few winces.

* AnArmAndALeg: When he brings Daniel back and he CameBackWrong, Daniel ripped an arm off. He goes to Rumple to get it repaired.

* AbhorrentAdmirer: To Ruby, though his abhorrence is related to his personality rather than his looks. His detestation seems to be relaxing a bit after his backstory episodes and his regained memories, so time will tell if he'll be less of a lech in future episodes.

* ActorAllusion: He has dyed his hair by the Season 5 episode 'Birth'; possibly more of a RealLifeWritesThePlot, this is due to his role on Series/IZombie. However, Zelena noting that she thought he was dead definitely counts.

* AmbiguousSituation: Is trapped in the Sorcerer's Hat as of "Fall".
** She's since been freed.

* NiceJobBreakingItHero: While he does have his [[OverprotectiveDad reasons]], his decision to not wake Belle from the sleeping curse ultimately pushes Gold even further over the edge in the attempt to save her and their unborn child, which only makes things worse. There's no real telling what he would've gotten up to if Belle ''had'' been awake, but it would've at least calmed him down.

* BalefulPolymorph: Was turned into a mouse by Gold in Season 2. After returning to the Enchanted Forest in season 3, he's human again.
