* KickTheSonOfABitch:
** Manipulating the Zetsu parts in Obito to make him do his bidding certainly counts. Bonus points for Obito being beaten half dead by Kakashi, and even more bonus points for the technique that Madara's forcing him to use being a fatal one. It's hard to feel sorry for Obito after all the atrocities he's committed.
*** Partially subverted now that it's known Madara manipulated Obito in order to enact his plan from the beginning by setting up Rin's death. Him controlling Zetsu also prevented Obito from using the Sage Rebirth Jutsu to revive those who died during the war as a way to atone for what he's done.
** [[spoiler: Then he gets this treatment from Black Zetsu - whose will is actually that of Kaguya. See YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness. And for added [[HeManWomanHater irony]], he's been the pawn of a woman all this time.]]
** With the revelation that [[spoiler: Sasuke's supposed HeelFaceTurn was really just an EnemyMine, and his intent all along was to get Madara and Obito out of the way so he could start his own revolution, Madara impaling him through the heart suddenly seems a lot less cruel and more LaserGuidedKarma.]]

* BaitAndSwitchBoss: Zig-Zagging trope. Everything in the series pointed to Madara as the BigBad, until it's revealed that he was the unidentified corpse that was revived by Kabuto. Then we find out that he's still the guy ultimately responsible for Tobi and his plan, so he is still the BigBad. However later, Tobi hijacked Madara's master plan, promoting himself to the role of BigBad and lowering Madara. But after the defeat Tobi, Madara right back resumed being the BigBad until as Black Zetsu stabbed him from behind and started to take over his body the, revealing that Black Zetsu is a manifestation of Kaguya's will and that the still kicking Kaguya is actually the true FinalBoss.

Plot happens.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: He reads on a tablet that the world is a nightmare, life is pain, and the only way to end it all is put everyone in an eternal dream. He decides to believe it and carry it out, since it is something allegedly written by the Sage of the Six Paths. It doesn't occur to him that only a fool, or someone with a shadier purpose, could believe that as long as everyone is happy, trapping all of humanity in an eternal illusion is a good thing. [[spoiler: At the end, no one among the main characters has to prove to him why this is wrong, as it turns out that [[BlatantLies it was all a huge lie]]]].

* DramaticIrony: When Sasuke (now possessing a Rinnegan of his own) was able to quickly deduce the mechanics behind his Limbo technique, Madara notes that had Sasuke been born earlier, he could've used him instead of Obito. But because Sasuke was a reincarnation of Indra like Madara was, Sasuke would never have been born as long as Madara remained alive.

* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Once he takes back his left eye from Obito, he implants the Sharingan he stole from Kakashi into Obito's eye. [[spoiler:The reunification of both eyes would allow Obito (and later Kakashi) to play an instrumental role in stopping Kaguya.]]

* TimeMaster: In ''Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm: Generations'', Tobi's flashback of Madara's famous battle with Hashirama has him utilize a technique capable of reversing time for a few seconds with his Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. This ability is not showcased in canon, however.

* UndignifiedDeath: As brutal as the series can be, [[spoiler:rotting away]] after being [[spoiler:regurgitated]] still couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. That said, [[spoiler:his actual actual death scene and his attitude as he lays dying are surprisingly dignified]]--it even included a somber soundtrack in the background.

This is averted after he absorbs Shinju and gains the power of flight, allowing him to launch multiple asteroids without consequence.

* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: He can be seen as one to TheDreaded and TheManBehindTheMan. The series builds up Madara as an imposing figure that is feared by all, and he certainly does live up to his name when he gets brought back as an Edo Tensei zombie. But as the story progresses, Madara's once-imposing image gradually breaks down to reveal a more pathetic character, that of a bitter old man who couldn't move on from his past failures. In fact, his feared image causes him to be HatedByAll, leaving him with few people who could carry out his legacy.

** His feelings towards his former best friend and rival Hashirama is extremely...complicated. On the one hand, the mere mention of Hashirama's name is enough to tick Madara off. On the other hand, he still treats his rival with respect and laments how the current generation of shinobi paled in comparison to him. [[spoiler:After being humbled by Black Zetsu and on the verge of death, it was Hashirama's comforting words that allowed him to finally let go of his Curse Of Hatred, his last words being him expressing satisfaction that they could be friends once more.]]

** Despite being the original owner of Nagato's Rinnegan, Madara doesn't utilize in battle all the Six Paths abilities that Nagato had mastered, limiting his usage to the [[GravityMaster Deva Path]] and the [[EnergyAbsorption Preta Path]]. A possible justification is that Madara had plenty of other offensive abilities (such as his Susanoo and Wood Release) that are more efficient and destructive in scale compared to the Animal Path or the Asura Path, which renders them obsolete.

* {{Narcissist}}: Thinks of himself as "extraordinary" and the greatest genius who ever lived; he's totally self-centred and cares nothing for anyone or anything but himself and his own grandiose ambitions. He is also insistent that he, and '''he alone''', can complete his plan since no one except him is worthy to lead all in the infinite illusion. He is also was the leader of a clan especially known for their arrogance and even there he regarded himself as wholly superior.

What cements them as this, however, is when a reformed Obito asks Madara if he was worth anything to him.
