* AlasPoorVillain: Right as he was about to flee White Base he's accidentally killed by a bazooka blast that was only meant to open a door he'd locked but ultimately damaged his jet pack and sent him plummeting to his death. Omur and Sayla are quite shaken by this, having wanted to capture him alive but instead having killed him

* LadyOfWar: Gundam's first example of a lady who's involved in a faction caught up in war.

* ActionGirl: The ''original'' in the series.

* TheQuietOne: With her troubled background and many secrets [[spoiler:such as her relations to Char, her family lineage and actual name of Artesia]], Sayla more or less keeps to herself unless she has something important to talk about... although as a DefrostingIceQueen she eventually becomes much more open with the rest of the WB crew.

* DefiantToTheEnd: When the Big Zam is rapidly getting turned into scrap he gets out and start firing a gun at the Gundam, scaring the hell out of the "[[TheDreaded White Devil of the Federation]]" in the process.

* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: [[spoiler:At the end of the series she's just about to flee A Baoa Qu and negotiate peace with the Earth Federation, only to get a beam rifle through the head courtesy of Char Aznable.]]

She's still a fascist dictator but a more palatable one, possessing some empathy for her family, and a willingness to work with other people rather then lord it over them. It makes it possible, if just barely, to root for her as she and Gihren maneuver for position.

* MomentOfWeakness: Ramba's death comes about due to him running into Sayla [[spoiler:(actually Artesia Som Deikun, Zeon Zum Deikun's daughter)]], distracted as to why the person he watched over when she was little was doing on ''White Base''. As he aptly puts it, "in the middle of a battle," Ramba Ral "forgot how to fight."

* EvilChancellor: His relationship with his father has definite aspects of this, given Gihren's positions. First as his father's top advisor, then prime minister and eventually supreme commander.

** Haman Karn and her Axis/Neo-Zeon, appearing in the second half of ''Zeta Gundam'' and as the BigBad of ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamZZ'', were Zabi loyalist forces that fled to Axis and invaded Earth, at least purportedly in [[EvilChancellor Haman]]'s case, to reestablish the Zabi family dictatorship Gihren had once presided over.

* {{Nepotism}}: He got his job as Zeon's supreme commander because his father is the ruling Sovereign. He's kept it by being an efficient, imaginative, [[ManipulativeBastard charismatic]], and utterly ruthless psycho.

** If you consider Zeon a stand-in for Japan, then he is the Hideki Tojo to his father's Hirohito [[note]]in which case Degwin's glasses can also be viewed as a ShoutOut to the Emperor[[/note]]. A ruthless politician and military leader who allow numerous atrocities to happen and fuels those under him with his charismatic speeches.

* NonActionBigBad: Following [[spoiler:Degwin's exit]]. Gihren's a schemer and an orator, not a frontline combatant.

* EvilRedhead: More like MagnificentBitch redhead.

* ShesGotLegs: And a miniskirt and high boots to keep showing them off.

* CoolPlane: The G-Fighter, which can combine with Amuro's Gundam to form the G-Armor (another cool plane) and the G-Bull (a [[TankGoodness cool tank]]).

* OvershadowedByAwesome: Courtesy of Amuro and Char being on the frontlines and going wild in their achievements and daredevil feats.

* HeroicSacrifice: He pilots Big Zam (a tank which needs at least four people to operate properly) alone against the Federation to buy enough time for his soldiers and young family to escape Solomon, knowing that he won't survive the encounter.

* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: For the bad guys.

* TheJuggernaut: The Big Zam is a mobile armor with near-impenetrable defences and sheer firepower, easily demolishing any Federation troops in its way. It only falls thanks to a Federation ace pilot's sacrifice to allow Amuro and his Gundam to damage it from below within its I-field perimeter and shove a beam saber to the main body.

* AmbiguousDisorder: Gets hyperfocused on building things such as Haro, at the expense of eating, sleeping, bathing, or tidying up his place. And that's ''before'' the trauma of being involved in the war. Subverted when things like his hyperfocus and sensitivity turn out to be ''powerful'' Newtype capabilities.

* InsufferableGenius: Tem Ray may be a horrible person, but when he was tasked to crash develop something that could hold the line against the Zaku I he not only came up with the Gundam that handily outperformed the replacements for the Zaku ''II'' (even the downgraded mass-production version, the GM, is superior even to the Dom) and made sure [[CrazyPrepared it could survive re-entry]], he also made it easy to pilot (enough it could be piloted by [[FallingIntoTheCockpit someone with no training literally holding the operator's manual on their lap]]), he even anticipated that he couldn't possibly get everything right on the first try and thus made sure it could be easily modified and equipped it with advanced recording systems so that he could come up with said systems based on combat data (while he was unable to do it himself, his replacements used Amuro's combat data to improve the Gundam and the GM and build even more advanced machines).

* ImplausibleDeniability: Degwin came to power ten years ago after the sudden and suspicious death of Zeon Daikun for whom he served as chief of staff. Degwin claims that Zeon, on his deathbed declared Degwin his successor. Given this much, of course Degwin couldn't possibly had anything to do with the highly questionable [[SoapOperaDisease Soap Opera Illness]] that caused Zeon Deikun’s untimely passing, could he? Notably, had the original plan of 52 episodes been followed Degwin would have admitted that he had indeed murdered Zeon.

* TheUsurper: The few people in Zeon who would dare have this opinion don't voice it out loud, but whether you believe Degwin is the rightful successor to Zeon Zum Deikun or not, he indisputably changed the Side 3 government from a republic to a monarchical dictatorship controlled by his own family.
* VillainousLegacy: He's supplanted by his son not long after, but Degwin taking the reigns from Deikun was when the Zeon movement really went off its rocker.
