He plays the authority figure far too much for his own good, and keeps secrets even when doing so is of no benefit. [[spoiler:If you confront him about his files in Episode 3, David will try to deflect rather than admit his reasons -- which are well-intentioned, if a bit misguided -- further alienating Joyce. he acknowledges this in a crumpled up letter you can find in Episode 4, saying he wanted to gather more proof, yet this further factors into it because he never gives the letter to Joyce.]]

* GoodAllAlong: [[spoiler:Despite being a huge {{Jerkass}} and being one of Max and Chloe's prime suspects for the strange happenings in Arcadia Bay, David turns out to be investigating Rachel's disappearance and saves Max from Jefferson in Episode 5.]]

* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: He belittles and victim blames Kate, but eventually expresses remorse and admits that he didn't fully understand her situation. [[spoiler: Then it's revealed he kidnapped and drugged Kate, along with a handful of other innocent teenage girls.]]

* {{Hypocrite}}: If Max takes the blame for Chloe's weed, David will later on tell Max that he won't bust her for it, as even he's not that much of an asshole.
