* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: While the other villainous groups were prone to infighting and [[BadBoss mistreating]] their workers, Tarakudo has a much more professional relationship with his generals and is fairly patient with the Enforcers, even explaining what Oni Masks' Shadowkhan do what.

* TheDreaded: Ikazuki is feared as Tarakudo's most fearsome general. But it's played for laughs as he ends up the ButtMonkey in all appearances - in his first, literally.

* TwoBeingsOneBody: The Rat Talisman is used on his mask to make him talk. Later he accidentally is stuck onto Finn's ''rear''.

* BadassGrandpa: He is an ancient and immortal demon after all.

* TheCorrupter: Anyone wearing a mask is slowly taken over by the Oni within. It's subtle at first, but the longer a mask is worn and more power is used, the more influence the Oni gains on the wearer until they barely act like humans at all anymore.

* DemonicPossession: When an Oni Mask is placed on the face of the user, they are still conscious of their actions, but are greatly influenced by the mask, and eventually it will completely take over. Finn was the only one who wasn't affected, because the Rat Talisman awakened Ikazuki was accidentally placed on his butt.

* BroughtDownToBadass: When Tarakudo is hit with a spell that causes him to [[spoiler:have a body so that the tenth mask can be used to seal away him and the rest of the Oni]], it also removes his MindOverMatter powers. [[spoiler:Even without them, sticking the mask to his face proved the only way to stop him and his armies.]]

* GlassCannon: Turns out that despite their armor, they're not that difficult to dissipate.

* ButtMonkey: Despite being the most powerful and the only named one of the Oni Generals, Ikazuki is often at the butt of all jokes. First by being revived without a body, then by literally being at Finn's butt for his debut episode, [[spoiler:and finally being "creamed" between Viper and El Toro's body slam]].

* {{Jerkass}}: He's respectful toward Tarakudo and presumably toward the other Generals, but toward everyone else he acts condescendingly. [[HoistByHisOwnPetard This attitude plays in his defeat]] when [[DogBitesBack Finn removes him from his butt and renders him back to his powerless state]], both because he's fed up with Ikazuki's arrogance and [[PottyEmergency needs to go to the bathroom]].

Demonic shadow spirits. They were introduced as {{ninja}}s who served Shendu, and briefly [[KidWithTheLeash Jade]]. In Season 4 we learn that their original masters were the Oni, and there are 9 different varieties of them.

* MookCarryover: Inverted. They are introduced as serving Shendu, but originally served Tarakudo, despite the latter not appearing until Season 4. Played straight with Shadow-Jade and to a lesser extent with anyone who put on a mask, though in both cases the summoner became BrainwashedAndCrazy. Daolon Wong ''tried'' to do this, but ended up freeing Tarakudo instead, though he had briefly controlled them in an earlier episode.

** When Jade got control of the Ninja Shadowkhan in "Queen of the Shadowkhan", she used them as household servants.
** When Ratso got the Razor-Khan Oni Mask, he used his Shadowkhan to play baseball.
** Captain Black is a double subversion. When he got the Sumo-Khan Oni Mask, he decided to replace all the Section 13 agents with Shadowkhan, claiming that they were better than humans in every way. We see several shots of Shadowkhan typing on computers, checking folders, arresting people... and mopping the floor.

* ShadowWalker: The Shadowkhan can use shadows as dimensional doors. They once travelled through the Shadow Realm in order to enter Jade's dream.
* SummonMagic: The Shadowkhan can be summoned anywhere there is ambient shadow.

* ReplacementMooks: When Daolon Wong gets fed up with the Enforcers' incompetence in "Sheep In, Sheep Out", he replaces them with the Ninja Khan until he decides that they're not superior after all.

* HumanoidAbomination: They don't look much different from Tohru. But their necks are more crouched.
* MightyGlacier: As stated above, they're strong and resilient. But they move slowly, and only by traveling through shadows they can move quickly.

* SuperToughness: The Talismans are required to destroy them.

* FakeUltimateMook: They're big, heavily armored samurai that wield shadow swords able to cut through anything, yet in the end they're just as easily defeated as the Ninja-Khan (or even easier). The fact that they're [[ButtMonkey Ikazuki's]] Shadowkhan is a justification.

* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: Valmont and Jade each end up wearing half an Oni Mask, so when they summon their Crab Khan, they each end up getting the left and right halves of each mook. But Valmont's Shadowkhan retain the heads, while Jade's don't.

* EldritchAbomination: Along with the Squid Khan, they look very monstrous and unearthly compared to the other Shadowkhan.

* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: They're not ninja warriors like the others, so they can't beat up enemies in a straight forward manner. However, they grow stronger with every shadow they consume.

* NearVillainVictory: [[spoiler:The Oni Generals are released [[NiceJobBreakingItHero by the heroes]] unknowingly doing the very thing that destroys their mask prisons -- by gathering them in one location. The Oni then [[AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs conquer Section 13]] and begin summoning enough Shadowkhan to cover the entire Earth in darkness. Tarakudo imprisons the J-Team and the Generals set out to spread the veil of darkness unopposed. The J-Team is able to stop and seal the Oni and the Shadowkhan away only after they accidentally discover the existence of the mask used for that purpose, and even then, getting the mask and placing it on Tarakudo's face is no easy feat.]]

* AffablyEvil: The least strict boss to the Enforcers and isn't particularly malevolent - while he still wants to take over the world, he isn't a dick about it.

* AristocratsAreEvil: He styles himself as the "Lord of All Oni" and "King of the Shadowkhan".

* EarlyBirdCameo: Well before he officially appears in Season 4, his face is first shown [[spoiler:on the cover of the Demon Archive, from which Jade makes [[MarkOfTheBeast a tattoo]] on her leg in "Queen of the Shadowkhan". Also, in "Sheep In, Sheep Out", the same mark is shown in Daolon Wong's cauldron when the dark chi wizard summons the Ninja Khan to serve him]].

And in "Ninja Twilight", when he first meets Viper, he says that she's quite a catch before trapping her in a fishnet.

* YouHaveFailedMe: When Chow loses the Ninja Khan Mask in "The Masks of the Shadowkhan", Tarakudo says this trope word for word. [[SubvertedTrope However, when Chow kneels for mercy, Tarakudo brushes it off, stating the setback to be minor in the long run]].
