* ButNotTooBlack: Despite still being recognizably black, she is much "whiter" than her cousin Mike Henke, to whom she's othervise very similar. Justified by the fact that ruling monarchs and their heirs are legally required to marry commoners, which exposes them to the much wider ethnic selection than other Wintons, who tended to marry "in the circle", limiting the diversity and preserving their original skin color.
** Which results in YouFailBiologyForever, as after several generations of marrying people without the 'black' genetic markers that were turned on specifically for the Wintons, she would not look so obviously black.
*** [[EpilepticTrees It is entirely possible]] that Manticore doesn't have a white majority since a substantial portion of the intial colony came from the Carriban, so some of the royal spouses could be black too, thus slowing the dilution. Weber is actually pretty vague about it, and, anyway, without active antimiscegenation laws the skin colors tend to average rather quickly, so ''anyone'' would have some black genes.
*** Alternately, the Wintons are genetically modified, with the modifications made to be dominant. It's quite possible that they tried to make the "Winton look" also dominant as part of the rest of the modification.

A mid-level Mesan security operative, who was coming from a less-tweaked genetic lines, but still high on the ladder and effective enough to be [[spoiler:(almost) fully brought into [[AncientConspiracy the Alignment]]'s plans, and]] one of Bardasano's henchmen. He was a chief of security in the scientific center [[spoiler: where Dr. Simoens worked, and, after hearing the man's story and becoming his friend, did a FaceHeelTurn, ensuring his escape to Manticore.]]

* EvenEvilHasStandards: His reaction upon hearing [[TheWoobie Herlander Simoens']] story.

** It was mainly Simoens who came up with the streak-drive -- the new-gen hyperdrive that allowed almost twice higher speeds than any other design.

* GeniusCripple: He is telepathically mute to his own kind, from injuries sustained from a StatSec rifle butt, but helped develop 'cat sign language to compensate.

* PlayfulHacker: The only other person in the whole series to have the similar way with computers is Anton Zilwicky, another GeniusBruiser.
** Well, Shannon Foraker and Ruth Winton come pretty close.
*** Ruth is more of an analyst than a pure hacker (also note that she's a student of capt. Zilwicky), and Shannon Foraker is too much of a GeniusDitz to be truly reliable. (Unless the Ditz part is ObfuscatingStupidity, which is entirely possible, Weber loves the trope.)
*** Evidence in books 8-10: Shannon's genuinely a ditz when it's not serious. When it is, [[LetsGetDangerous she's scarily reliable]].

*** There's also the fact that it's not "Benton Ramirez" but "Benton-Ramirez". One hyphenated surname versus two distinct ones. Also, if that same naming custom applied, either Allison wouldn't have taken Alfred's surname at all (since Spanish naming customs don't even have the maiden name concept) or would she would be

** Now she has.
*** Brought vials? Or grandkids? (Non-readers want to know.)
**** Grandkids, of course. That was the whole point!

Honor's father, one more in the almost endless line of biologists and physician Harringtons, Alfred is a no less famous doctor that his wife, but, sadly, doesn't have the same impact on the story. A top-notch neurosurgeon, his main occupation in the series seems to be patching Honor up after her more demanding adventures and providing some domestic air for the family with his [[SupremeChef cooking]].

* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Allison is barely to his waist.
* LastOfHisKind: [[spoiler: He and Honor are basically all that remained of Harrington clan after Oyster Bay.]]
* TheMedic: Spent almost half century at the Bassingford Medical Center -- the main Manticore's military hospital -- until his retirement as Surgeon Captain. He's also got to patch his girl up both times she needed it.

* LastOfHicKind: [[spoiler: He and Honor are basically all that remained of Harrington clan after Oyster Bay.]]

Andrew [=LaFollet=] is the head of Harrington Steadholder's Guard and Honor Harrington's personal armsmen. He is a close friend of Honor and for the longest time he was her personal bodyguard. Now, though, he has [[spoiler: become the her son's bodyguard.]] Do not harm Honor when you are in his presence if you wish to remain intact. It is a [[BerserkButton Very Bad Idea]].

*** It's no longer necessary; the Navy's Bureau of Personnel gave up on even trying to separate them.
