* SillyReasonForWar: During the Yamada's show arc, Koito's gift in acrobatics threaten to overshadow Sugimoto's harakiri's trick (the ''whole reason'' of them being in the show, to begin with). A subplot develops with Koito [[SmugSuper refusing to tone down his performance]] and Sugimoto trying to outdo and eventually ruin Koito's show.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: [[ButForMeItWasTuesday He doesn't seem to recall them and vice versa]], but he's not only met a number of the Russo-Japan War soldiers involved in the gold hunt, but his actions have had a vital role in their backstories and may have even have led to their participation in the hunt to begin with.
** During his hunt for his sister's killer, Tanigaki joined the military and took part in the Russo-Japan War in hopes of locating him. During the war, he met a certain First Division soldier who was part of the White Sash Brigade. ** [[spoiler:After Tsurumi and Tsukishima are injured in a bombing, they need sleds to cross an ice-cap to a nearby military hospital, the problem being that there was only one sled left. This leads to both Tsukishima surviving the war and becoming Tsurumi's right hand man.]]
* TheSocialDarwinist: Only in a fight situation but he makes it clear that in a matter of life and death, the strong survive and the weak perish.
* TisOnlyABulletInTheBrain: [[spoiler:He gets shot in the head by [[ColdSniper Ogata]], and for all his HealingFactor, does show [[ShownTheirWork the realistic effects]] of brain damage afterward, though they are pretty mild in his case: slight dyslexia and enhanced emotional response — he becomes significantly more sentimental and easier to anger afterward.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Miso goes well with anything to him, and he always carries some around.
* UnfriendlyFire: Sugimoto admits to having almost killed an officer who pissed him off.
* WeaponOfChoice: An Arisaka Type 30 rifle plus a bayonet.
* WhereIWasBornAndRazed: Sugimoto burned down his house to have "a clean slate" and sever his ties to his native village.
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Fakes being on the verge of death to convince Tsurumi that he's willing to cooperate as long as they bring him to the hospital, enabling his escape from the 7th Division.
* WorthyOpponent: To both Hijikata and Ushiyama. Both saw Sugimoto kicking ass and praised him directly, looking forward to the moment Sugimoto would clash with them.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: Delivers a Shining Wizard to Ushiyama.

[[folder:Asirpa]]
!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/HarukaShiraishi (Japanese), Creator/MonicaRial (English)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goldenkamuyv11.jpg]]
A young Ainu who meets Sugimoto at the beginning of the series. She quickly befriends him and agrees to help him look for the treasure to get revenge on the man who killed her father. Asirpa is unique among Ainu women in that she is a skilled survivalist and hunter; although she doesn't partake in violence, she ensures that her group can survive while trekking through the wilderness of Hokkaido.
----
* ActionGirl: Asirpa doesn't kill people, but still participates in the action.
* AncestralWeapon: Her ''menomakiri'', a dagger made for women, was crafted by her father.
* ArcherArchetype: She uses a bow with great accuracy to hunt bears. She's usually calm, but sometimes NotSoAboveItAll.
* BadassAdorable: Very badass and extremely adorable, at least when she isn't making hilariously ugly expressions during funnier moments.
* BadassNative: She is an Ainu on the island of Hokkaido.
* BadassesWearBandanas: Asirpa wears an Ainu bandana.
* BrokenBird: She is noted to have rarely smiled ever since her father died, and only Sugimoto would break that stoicism.
* CantHoldHisLiquor: Justified since she's probably never drunk alcohol.
* CerebusRetcon: She is surprisingly adept at hunting and survival in the mountains for a little Ainu girl, especially in a culture where women are expected to StayInTheKitchen. It is mostly presented in a lighthearted way to expose the most interesting parts of Ainu culture, and seemingly give Sugimoto a competent KidSidekick. When Sugimoto meets the real Noppera-Bou/[[spoiler:Wilk]] in Abashiri Prison, the disfigured prisoner confesses that [[spoiler:he had been secretly grooming her into becoming a freedom fighter waging war against the Japanese government for the Ainu, using hunting and survival training as a pretext]]. TheReveal is all the more shocking since Asirpa is a BadassPacifist and a follower of ThouShaltNotKill, yet Wilk planned [[spoiler:for her to eventually become a martyr through violence]].
* CharacterDevelopment: After watching a cinematograph (early film), she starts to understand the significance of her people and their culture and is more driven to finding the gold to use it for their welfare.
* ChekhovsGunman: She is the only one who knows how to decipher the codes. The only other person was her father, who got shot.
* TheChiefsDaughter: Her grandfather was the most important man in her village.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Implied. When Sugimoto tells the group that he wants the gold for the widow of his friend, Ogata asks Sugimoto if she and the woman Sugimoto loved is one and the same. Asirpa suddenly dances with a darkened face and later gets a LuminescentBlush as she answers Sugimoto that she did the Crane Dance because the group ate a crane.
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: Both her parents died when Asirpa was young. Thus she spent time in the mountains acquiring her hunting skills.
* CradleOfLoneliness: Asirpa is cradling to Retar, whom she and her dead father raised together.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Has dark blue hair and eyes.
* DaddysGirl: Asirpa has nothing but fond memories of her late father and praises his ability as a hunter. He's also the one who taught her how to hunt, although Ainu women typically stay at their village. Justified in that her mother died of illness right after giving birth to her.
* ExactWords: "'''I''' won't kill you" ''(emphasis added)''. Said during a MexicanStandoff with [[spoiler:Ogata]], who calls her bluff for her ThouShaltNotKill creed. Cue a ''very'' angry [[spoiler:'''Sugimoto''']] right behind him.
* FireForgedFriends: With Sugimoto after they work together to kill a man-eating brown bear.
* GenderIsNoObject: Surprisingly, most of the cast doesn't call attention to her gender, even though the series takes place during the early 20th century and Ainu culture expects women to StayInTheKitchen. The only exception is Asirpa's grandmother, who worries about her granddaughter's lack of traditionally feminine skills.
* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: She asks why Anehata would [[SexIsEvilAndIAmHorny kill the animals with whom he's made love if he knew how wrong his actions were]].
* GoodIsOldFashioned: Downplayed, Asirpa follows her culture but ignores some customs such as being tattooed around the mouth when she is near to age.
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: She speaks Japanese fluently but mixes her speech with Ainu words.
* HairColorDissonance: She's portrayed in the manga artwork and the anime as having dark blue highlights in her black hair. Her hair is outright dark blue on the covers for Volumes 2 and 11 of the manga.
* HunterTrapper: Asirpa is skilled at hunting and setting traps.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Asirpa has a rule against eating man-killing animals but finds excuses to eat them anyway because she's hungry.
* IDoNotLikeGreenEggsAndHam: At one point, Asirpa becomes convinced that miso is poop and refuses to eat it. When she forces herself to try a Japanese dish with miso, she finds it delicious.
* IKnowYourTrueName: Hijikata knows the Japanese name she has in the family registry. It's "Asuko Kochoube", the one clue Noppera-Bou gave Hijikata about Asirpa's identity.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Asirpa has blue eyes. It becomes plot-relevant when it's revealed her father came from Russia and the eyes confirm her link to Noppera-Bou.
* JabbaTableManners: One omake has Asirpa managing to get a whole boiled otter's head on her cheek while eating.
* JeanneDArchetype: [[spoiler:Invoked. Wilk had been secretly grooming her into becoming a freedom fighter waging war against the Japanese government for the Ainu, using hunting and survival training as a pretext. Once [[ShellShockedVeteran Sugimoto]] finds about the truth, the Japanese ex-soldier calls him out for trying to [[LampshadedTrope make her some Ainu Joan of Arc]] because it would mean she has to be a murderer.]]
%%* KidSidekick: To Sugimoto.
* LittleMissBadass: Asirpa is only 11 or 12 years old, and though she doesn't fight people, she's the most adept survivalist and hunter of her group. In fact, she was hunting bears with her father before that. [[spoiler:It turns out Wilk had been secretly grooming her into becoming a freedom fighter waging war against the Japanese government for the Ainu, using hunting and survival training as a pretext]].
* LongHairIsFeminine: Played with. She is [[TheSmurfettePrinciple the only girl]] of Sugimoto's group and has the longest hair down to her mid-back. However, she has no skill in typically female occupations, much to her grandmother's worry.
* MasterPoisoner: Asirpa can cook deadly poison able to take down bears.
* MeaningfulName: Asirpa means "new year" but can also mean "future" in Ainu, reflecting that she calls herself an Ainu woman for a new era because while she respects the Ainu traditions, she doesn't follow all of them blindly. Meanwhile, her Japanese name, Asuko Kochoube, comes from the Japanese word for tomorrow (''asu'') and a locational surname derived from Kochōbetsu in Tōbuchi, Sakhalin. The first name roughly corresponds to her Ainu name, while the surname {{foreshadow|ing}}s that her father is a half-Polish half-Sakhalin Ainu settler. [[spoiler:As her father wanted her to become a figurehead for an eventual Ainu uprising, her names take on a much darker meaning.]]
* MixedAncestry: She's very much an Ainu girl, but Hijikata speculates early on that she has European ancestry upon seeing hints of green in her blue pupils. Downplayed, as she's the daughter of a half-Polish half-Sakhalin Ainu settler and his Hokkaido Ainu wife.
* MsExposition: About the Ainu culture.
* ObsessedWithFood: She is always eager to eat.
* PeltsOfTheBarbarian: Asirpa wears a fur over her clothes to protect herself from the cold.
* PhenotypeStereotype: Hijikata speculates early on that Asirpa has European ancestry upon seeing hints of green in her blue pupils. Later, it's revealed that her father, Wilk, is half-Polish.
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: She begged Retar to stay with her when the wolf heard the howl of another wolf. Retar still comes back to her from time to time.
%%* PrecociousCrush: [[LittleMissBadass Asirpa]] is occasionally implied to have a crush on Sugimoto, who is in his early twenties.
* RealityEnsues: As Makanakkuru mentions, for all her maturity, Asirpa is still a tender young girl dealing with the loneliness of being left behind by her late father and [[CanineCompanion Retar]].
* SecretKeeper: A non-private situation; she decides not to pass on her code to her partner Sugimoto, because he'd abandon her for her own protection and she doesn't want that.
* ShipperOnDeck: She thinks that Tanigaki and Inkarmat should marry.
* SkewedPriorities: Asirpa running out of her favorite seasoning seems more urgent than [[spoiler:really making sure if her father is a murderer or not]].
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: She is the only female member of Sugimoto's group.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Asirpa could be alternatively spelled as "Ashirpa", which is used in the official French translations.
* ThankYourPrey: Asirpa thanks her prey by making use of anything possible from them.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Not kill humans, otherwise hunting animals is fair game. She strictly adheres to this code. When she sees that her own father is a murderer, she weeps out of disappointment. Even when Kiroranke continuously exposes her to the multiple injustices of the Japanese and Russian governments towards the Ainu and their reprehensible exploitation of the natural resources, Asirpa still wonders if the gold is worth finding at all since it will fund a new bloodshed.
* TrainingFromHell: She went through harsh training since early childhood by her late father, Wilk, with the secret intent of [[spoiler:grooming her into becoming a freedom fighter waging war against the Japanese government for the Ainu]]. Judging from what is shown in the series, it involved telling her to hunt a bear alone when she was seven or younger. As a result, she's the most adept survivalist and hunter of Sugimoto's group.
* TrapMaster: As a hunter, Asirpa is, of course, skilled at setting traps, not only for animals but humans as well.
* {{Tykebomb}}:Wilk trained her for hunting and survival since her early childhood as a pretext to [[spoiler:turn her into a freedom fighter for the Ainu against the Japanese government.]] Sugimoto, being a ShellShockedVeteran, calls him out on going to such extreme lengths for the cause of independence.
* WeaponOfChoice: A wooden bow with a string made of whale's dorsal muscle, and [[PoisonedWeapon Poisoned Arrows]].
%%* WiseBeyondTheirYears: For an 11 to 12 years old girl, she is quite mature. Combined with NotSoAboveItAll, though.
* YouKilledMyFather: She wants to take the treasure to get back at her father's murderer.

[[folder:Shiraishi Yoshitake "The Escape King"]]
!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/KentaroIto (Japanese), Ben Phillips (English)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goldenkamuyv9.png]]
One of the Abashiri convicts and a robber, on which a part of the map was imprinted. As his nickname suggests, his specialty is escaping from all sorts of bonds or cells. Impressed by Sugimoto, he decides to gamble on his success and support when he can. Unfortunately, he's also useless whenever "escape" is not part of the plan. He later reveals that he became famous as a prison escape artist when he fell in love with a nun he never met. Breaking multiple times out of prison to try to meet her, Shiraishi ends up at Abashiri where he does meet that nun and is sorely disappointed by how she looks.
----
* AccidentalMisnaming: Shiraishi is called the "Excrement King" by Asirpa.
* AmusingInjuries: Various animals bite Shiraishi in the head, to his dismay.
* BadassBoast:
** He utters a one-time boast when they ask him if he could break into a certain prison to speak with a convict in there.
--->"I've been thrown into every single prison they've got in this country! But there wasn't a single one of them... that I couldn't break out of."
** He boasts about his legendary skill to frighten prison guard.
--->''(To an annoying guard, while in prison)'' "Really, you shouldn't bully me ''too'' much... or I'll break out when '''you're''' the one on duty."
* BoysLikeCreepyCritters: Shiraishi used to have a pet lizard and a pet rhinoceros beetle. [[spoiler:It turns out the beetle is an empty shell in which Shiraishi hides small objects such as the copy of his cell's lock's key]].
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He is generally an incompetent idiot most of the time, but his ability for breaking in and out of places is undeniable, and comes in handy several times.
* ButtMonkey: The one character who draws the short end of all the jokes involving him.
* CasanovaWannabe: His attempt at seducing Ienaga is pathetic, to say the least.
* CrazyPrepared: He keeps many items in his stomach that do come in handy whenever he's bound, like a cartridge full of gunpowder to break locks.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: Shiraishi can easily dislocate his joints, enabling him to pass through narrow orifices or escape arm locks.
* EnemyMine: His initial confrontation with Sugimoto is interrupted after they both fall into a frigid lake. They agree to a truce so they can not die from the cold.
* EscapeArtist: Shiraishi's specialty. He's not only nimble or knows his way around locks, but exploits the organization of the prisons themselves to his advantage.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Shiraishi is so annoying no one from Sugimoto or Hijikata's groups wish to really take the effort of saving him when he's captured by soldiers from the 7th Division. Only Sugimoto volunteers to save him.
%%* HotBloodedSideburns
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: One of the only sympathetic convicts shown so far. It helps that he isn't a murderer.
* LeParkour: Shiraishi is a practitioner of this.
* LovableRogue: He is a convict, but is so far portrayed sympathetically and or comically.
* MasterOfDisguise: He briefly infiltrated the 7th Division headquarters and slipped away unnoticed, disguised as one of the soldiers.
* TheMillstone: Shiraishi screws up a lot. One notable instance is tripping and dropping a bag of bombs into a fire in a building, not only putting the whole group in danger but forcing them to stop their hunt for the gold to replenish their supplies.
* TheMole: Shiraishi secretly works for Hijikata's team after being coerced into occasionally feeding them intel or giving copies of Sugimoto's skins. [[spoiler:However, the copies he gives them of the skins are fakes, letting Sugimoto know he really didn't want to betray them.]]
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: Based on and named after [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshie_Shiratori Yoshie Shiratori]], who escaped prison 4 separate times. In the museum that the historic Abashiri prison was converted into, a statue of Shiratori escaping through the skylight in his underwear is attached to the ceiling.
* NonActionGuy: Shiraishi is not a fighter, nor is he brave. Whenever trouble occurs, he flees or hides.
* NoRespectGuy: Nobody respects him, nobody.
* PoliticallyIncorrectHero: When he first meets Sugimoto and Asirpa, he asks the veteran if she is his "dog". Sugimoto, [[BigBrotherInstinct outraged]], threatens to make him unable to speak before Asirpa says she's used to being called like that because of her Ainu heritage. Sugimoto calls her out because he thinks that no one should be used to such things. Afterward, he stops acting condescending towards Asirpa.
* RedBaron: "The Escape King"
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: In Chapter 91, Shiraishi tries to run away from his companions because he knows Sugimoto will learn of his status as TheMole for Hijikata and thus fears his vengeance. However, Sugimoto later puts it behind him, as he checked the skins Shiraishi gave to Hijakata and saw that they were fakes.
* ShaggyDogStory: Shiraishi's flashback involves endlessly chasing after a nun because of a lousy portrait, breaking out of various prisons before inevitably getting captured by the police. In the end, said sister turns out to be as ugly as her picture suggested.
* StatingtheSimpleSolution: He has a knack for finding simple solutions to aid Sugimoto and Asirpa. Firstly, he said that rather than locate the convicts bearing tattoos, they should locate the ''author'' of the codes, which kicks off the Abashiri prison arc.
** Later on, [[spoiler:he brings up the event of Noppera-Bo taking part of the gold and his ship capsizing as a reference that that specific gold could be used to trace where the majority's location, thus removing the need for the tattooed skins.]]
* StomachOfHolding: He keeps some items in his stomach he ties to his teeth for later regurgitation, such as a [[ConvenientlyPlacedSharpThing small razor blade]], needle, wires or even cartridges.
* SweetTooth: Shiraishi [[FridgeHorror always]] has some candy on him. In chapter 92, when he's captured by a platoon of soldiers, the only way Hijitaka has found to catch his attention while the soldiers kept on being distracted was to disguise himself as a sweet merchant.
* ThisLooksLikeAJobForAquaman: Discussed – Shiraishi's only good at escaping from cells, which isn't particularly useful when most of the manga is spent fighting people to the death outdoors.
* TunnelKing: Shiraishi can dig through snow very easily.

A Russian sniper who was left wounded and his unit wiped out by Ogata and Kiroroanke, he decided to desert from the army and join Sugimoto to take revenge on Ogata.
----
* ColdSniper: Had no problem shooting an old man in the head in an ambush simply for carrying the best rifle. He also shoots a 7th Division soldier in the head after being told by Aspira to shoot them in the foot.
* EnemyMine: Vasily and Sugimoto have a mutual grudge against Ogata and thus easily become allies in order to kill him.
* FacialHorror: Covers up the bottom half of his face after being shot there by Ogata. By Chapter 245, it appears to have healed and scarred over, the scar being more prominent on his left cheek, where the bullet exited.
* HandicappedBadass: Is left unable to speak due to Ogata shooting him in the mouth, but is easily up there with Ogata and Tanigaki as the best marksmen in the series.
* HiddenDepths: Revealed to be a talented artist who when not sniping makes very accurate drawings of people and animals.
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: His sniping skills and mouth injury recall Finnish sharpshooter Simo Häyhä. He's also named after Soviet sniper Vasily Zaitsev.
* SixthRanger: Tried to kill the gold hunters while Aspira was still traveling with Ogata and Kiroroanke, and shoots at them again after being reunited with Sugimoto under the belief Ogata and Kiroroanke were still with them. Ends up becoming a member after following them around for a while and joins them in their escape from Sakhalin.
* TalkingWithSigns: He doesn't speak any Japanese, so he has to communicate with Sugimoto and his group using surprisingly detailed drawings.

An Ainu and a friend of Wilk, but a veteran of the 7th Division too. He meets Asirpa, Sugimoto, and Shiraishi and soon cooperates with them. However, Sugimoto still has doubts what his true motives are. It is revealed that he played everyone after the gold in Hokkaido and has managed to take Asirpa with him to Sakhalin, exposing at the same time is motives as revolutionary fighting for the independence of ethnic minorities in East Russia.
----
* AmbiguouslyEvil: A definitely shady character, whose true allegiance is unclear for the majority of the story. It's implied he is part of a conspiration of Russian Ainus who aim to conquer Hokkaido from Japan. [[spoiler:He reveals his true colors and stabs Inkarmat in the stomach with his ''makiri'', and it is confirmed after the Abashiri arc that he is one of the Ainu conspirators and a revolutionary aiming to take Hokkaido for their people.]]
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Can predict the outcome of a horserace just by observing the horses, explaining how Inkarmat could predict the results of the race too.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: When Asirpa, Sugimoto, and Shiraishi first meet him, Kiroranke comes across a genuinely kind and friendly man. He was a member of the "People's Will" movement and helped assassinate Tsar Alexander II through a bombing.]]
* BornInTheSaddle: Kiroroanke has been close to horses since youth, which is not so surprisingly considering that the Ainu during the Meiji Era had a reputation for being very good horsemen. Not only he knows how to analyze their behavior, but also he can also outpace experienced jockeys on a heavier than usual horse, with a horrible head start to boot.

!!!'''Voiced by''': Creator/YoshimasaHosoya (Japanese), Creator/DavidMatranga (English)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goldenkamuyv5.png]]
A soldier from the 7th Division which grew more interested in hunting Retar than looking for the gold. He comes from the Matagi tribe, another tribe of hunters living on the north side of Honshu. As of now, he is cooperating with Sugimoto, as he's promised Huci to bring back Asirpa safe and sound to her. In his backstory, we learn that after a fire, Tanigaki discovered the corpse of his sister Fumi beside the knife of his brother-in-law Kenkichi who supposedly fled to sign into the Army. Thirsting for vengeance, Tanigaki became a soldier as well and participated in the Russo-Japanese War. When he finally finds Kenichi who is dying, Kenkichi reveals to Tanigaki that Fumi was dying of smallpox and that he performed a MercyKill on her then burned down his house to fulfill her last request before fleeing out of guilt.
----
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: He is less violent than his comrades in the 7th Division.

* BadassesWearBandanas: Tanigaki switches to an Ainu bandana.
%%* BlueOniRedOni: The blue to Nihei's red.
* ButtMonkey: He injures his foot by playing with a pair of ''sey-pirakka'', gets mistaken for [[BestialityIsDepraved Anehata]] by the local Ainu, and is kicked down from the sled of Enonoka's grandfather for being too heavy.
%%* CarpetOfVirility

* ColdSniper: He is handy with a rifle, and can out snipe a dedicated sniper team. Moreover, Tanigaki is very analytical whenever he hunts (or is hunted).
* ConflictingLoyalties: Between his unit, his legacy as a Matagi, and basic human decency. Although he stops cooperating with the 7th Division, Tanigaki still doesn't want to fight them and mostly stays neutral because of the loyalties.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: After being thrown around and put in mortal danger multiple times because of a treasure hunt he doesn't care about, Tanigaki is able to leave Hokkaido with Inkarmat and their daughter for good.
* EgomaniacHunter: Wants to kill Retar for his ego alone.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Tanigaki is an EvilPoacher but involving innocent people in a killing spree is beneath him.
* EvilPoacher: Tanigaki wants to hunt down the last Hokkaido Wolf.
* {{Foil}}: To all other soldier or former soldier characters. A major theme in the series is how war changes people and [[ShellShockedVeteran not everyone can change back]]. By contrast, by spending time in Asirpa's loving village, Tanigaki has managed to put his past as a soldier behind him. This is especially the case with Ogata, who has lived an almost lifeless life. Meanwhile, Tanigaki not only has recovered from war, but also got himself a surrogate family with Cikapasi, Inkarmat, and Asirpa's family.
* GoingNative: Downplayed. He starts wearing a customary Hokkaido Ainu clothing after Asirpa's grandmother shelters him.
* HandicappedBadass: Even if he needs crutches to walk, he will kill you.
* HeelFaceTurn: He seems to have abandoned his evil ways and cooperates with Sugimoto.

* ManlyTears: In his flashback, Tanigaki shed some of them as he listens to his brother-in-law, Kenichi's, true story.
* MrFanservice: Tanigaki is practically the manga's idol. His muscled physique is the most regularly exposed out of all the characters (even a formal photo session turns into a gag when the photographer asks Tanigaki to pose in his fundoshi). * TohokuRegionalAccent: He’s from a Matagi village in Akita, and during flashbacks to his time in the village he speaks in a mild Tōhoku dialect. However, in the main events of the story he mostly speaks standard Japanese, with only occasional Tōhoku mannerisms.
* WouldHurtAChild: He doesn't raise his rifle toward Asirpa, but later doesn't hesitate to take her hostage.
* YouKilledMyFather: Tanigaki became a soldier because he sought revenge on a friend who killed his younger sister, Fumi. It turns out it was a ''requested'' MercyKill.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Despite the beard and rugged appearance, he is no older than Sugimoto who is in his early twenties.
