In Phone Dude's opening call on Night 1, he mentions that the ventilation system needs to be kept functional or else you'll start seeing things. The Phantoms are the end result of not doing this, and while they can't kill you, they can certainly give you a good scare and give Spring Trap time to get to you.

When Freddy Fazbears closed down for good, the legend of the horrible events that transpired there became an urban legend, and were burned into the memory of everyone in the surrounding areas. Naturally, someone about 30 to 40 years after the bite of 87' and the kidnappings decides to bank on the terror and make a horror attraction based around the legend of the restaurant. It's got everything- original props from the restaurant, bad electric wiring from the restaurant, and even a night guard [[RunningGag (based off the restaurant)]]. One day, a week before it opens, the owners even find an animatronic in a hidden room in the diner. They bring him to the attraction, and everything seems to be in order- until he begins moving on his own.

* DopplegangerSpin: If the ventilation fails and your vision starts to fade, you'll hallucinate ''several'' Springtraps on the cameras. Hope you remembered where the real one was!

* InterfaceScrew: Their primary game mechanic is to cause these. They can't directly kill you, but every moment they're allowed to cause trouble is more time for Springtrap to close in...
** The Balloon Boy, Foxy, Chica and Freddy phantoms all cause a JumpScare if triggered, which will disable the ventilation.
** Balloon Boy also blocks a random camera with his face, letting Springtrap move unimpeded if he happens to be in that area.
** Phantom Mangle will play ''awful'' garbled noises, preventing you from hearing Springtrap's footsteps and also disabling the audio system when [[AmbiguousGender he/she]] leaves.
** Phantom Puppet is probably the worst of them, also playing garbled noises while getting right up in your face and ''staying there'' for a little while, during which he completely blocks your view and prevents you from using the cameras or the maintenance panel. He also disables the ventilation on his way out. Made even worse because other Phantoms you might've triggered can still jump you while he's there, crashing the ventilation early.

* NoFairCheating: Think you can just have Springtrap stand by the door and then stare at him endlessly to win the night? Wrong: trying this will result in Phantom Freddy jumping you [[TheAIIsACheatingBastard with no wind-up or warning]], allowing Springtrap to move in for the kill.

* RedHerring: When the Phone Dude mentions not having the ventilation on will make you see "crazy stuff", the player would naturally think it means the phantoms. They actually act entirely independent of the ventilation, and the crazy stuff in question is ''multiple Springtraps on the cameras''.

->''"Management has also been made aware that the "Spring-Bonnie" animatronic has been noticeably moved, and would like to remind employees that this costume is not safe to wear under '''any circumstances'''."''
-->-- '''Phone Guy'''

Thirty years after Freddy Fazbear's Pizza closed its doors for good, a place called "Fazbear's Fright" was built, a horror attraction meant for patrons to relive the horrors of the cursed pizzeria. However, the attraction now has one new animatronic... this guy. Springtrap is a failed prototype of Bonnie from back when Fazbear's was trying to create a multi-purpose suit with animatronic parts that could lock away with springs, so it could be worn as a costume by employees. Unfortunately, the spring locks didn't hold well, and so the suit was left to rot...

* AnimalisticAbomination: Looks like a zombie, as homicidal as his predecessors, and [[spoiler:haunted by a gleeful [[WouldHarmAChild child murderer]]]], this is a given.
* ArtificialZombie: Spring Trap is [[spoiler:the pseudo-reanimated corpse of the Murderer wearing the suit, likely both possessed and driven by the suit's parts connected to his nervous system. This is a major contrast to the other animatronics, which, despite the hints that they're stuffed with corpses, have their usual endoskeletons with no hint of human material inside.]]
* BigBad: For the third game [[spoiler:and, through [[BiggerBad his inhabitant,]] the ''entire series.'']]
* BodyHorror: He looks like a rotting zombie, so this goes without saying. [[spoiler:Turns out this is because he ''is'' a zombie, as the Purple Man's corpse is inside him.]]
* CameBackStrong: [[spoiler:The Murderer getting brutally mangled by the suit should've been a ''good'' thing. Unfortunately, now he's haunting it, so he's now in control of a big metal killing machine. Being craftier than the children before him does ''not'' help.]]
* ChekhovsGun: The Phone Guy's recorded messages talk extensively about the safety precautions required to safely operate Springtrap, and what will happen when these precautions are not followed. Come the [[spoiler:Night 5 ending's mini-game...]]
* ClingyCostume: It's a bit hard to take off this suit [[spoiler:when your innards have basically been Iron Maiden'ed to the inside of it.]]
* CreepyBlueEyes / SupernaturalGoldEyes / BlackEyesOfEvil: As opposed to original Bonnie's RedEyesTakeWarning.
* DoNotCallMePaul: His canonical name appears to have been either Bonnie or Spring-Bonnie (the latter is what Phone Guy refers to him as), but the bunny's name was revealed to fans by way of a coded message saying, "My name is Springtrap." Taking the ending into account, it may be intended as a MeaningfulRename, either by the staff who knew about the co-workers's deaths that occurred in him or by Springtrap himself. The latter might carry implications of [[spoiler:the Murderer [[LossOfIdentity losing]] or [[ThatManIsDead purposefully dropping]] whatever his human identity was.]]

* EasilyDetachableRobotParts: Springtrap is an animatronic that can be dismantled and held back with spring locks so it can be worn as a costume. The animatronic can be "rebuilt" and still work fine.
* EvilCounterpart: Or Evil'''er''' when compared to the rest of the animatronics of the series. [[spoiler: Which is no surprise, seeing as his inhabitant helped make them evil in the first place.]]
* EvilIsVisceral: The innards of this model are rusted-out and decrepit, [[spoiler:making it hard to discern the sinewy flesh of Purple Guy]] from the suit's workings.
* {{Expy}}: With his yellowish green color scheme, Springtrap resembles a much, much more twisted version of [[Franchise/WinnieThePooh Rabbit]]. Which is fitting, as Golden Freddy looks like Pooh.
* FacialHorror: When examining the randomized loading screens, you can make out some of the damage done to the [[spoiler:killer]]'s head when the [[strike:bear trap]] costume [[spoiler:clamped shut on him. Hooks were driven into his cheeks, giant grapefruit-size eyes exploded from his sockets (or were ''smashed into them''), and a neck attachment shot up his larynx and through through the roof of his mouth, spearing it open.]].
* FailsafeFailure: When the failsafes on the rabbit costume... well, failed, [[spoiler:a robot endoskeleton erupted from his body, as shown by the reservoir of blood around him]]. And yet, according to the minigame, [[spoiler:this did not kill as quickly as one would hope. (Or at all, since he's a shambling zombie]].)
* FauxAffablyEvil: Gives off this feeling without saying a word, if only because of the leering [[SlasherSmile smile]] that appears to be his default expression.
* FinalBoss: He [[VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddys4 might be]] the last true enemy encountered chronologically in the entire franchise, and as such is the fastest, smartest, and scariest of them all. [[spoiler:Fitting, considering he's [[BiggerBad the Murderer.]]]]
* FlawedPrototype: Spring Trap was one of two suits designed as an animatronic-suit hybrid. One can use a hand-crank on the animatronic to recoil and compress the Animatronic parts into the sides of the suit, with a spring lock holding the animatronic parts in place. This allows an entertainer/performer to climb into the suit and wear it. The parts must be tightly compressed and the spring locks secured, or else the animatronic parts will break loose, leading to death/grotesque maiming of the person wearing it.
* FourFingeredHands: [[NonStandardCharacterDesign Unlike all of the other animatronics,]] averted, since the suit was meant to be worn by a human.
* GhostlyGape: Though obscured by the teeth of the suit, opening up Springtrap's head reveals that [[spoiler:its inhabitant's mouth is permanently speared open by the animatronic parts.]]
* GlasgowGrin: His chaps are torn up, making his big teeth even more apparent. [[spoiler:Given the ([[VillainousBreakdown almost]]) [[SlasherSmile ever-present grin]] on its wearer's face back when he was alive, this makes sense.]]
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Notably, he is the first animatronic in the series to have these without first taking out his regular eyes, which can't be good news for that poor security guard.
* GoldMakesEverythingShiny: Well, it ''used'' to be colored gold...
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Apart from, well, ''[[BodyHorror his whole body]]'', his right eye has a rip that looks remarkably like a scar across the eye. [[spoiler:And being animated by the Murderer is a more than needed qualifier for the "Evil" part.]]
* HairRaisingHare: Goodness ''gracious'' '''''[[PrecisionFStrike fuck.]]'''''
* TheHeavy: He usurps Freddy's spot on the title image on Steam, and is [[IncrediblyLamePun heavily]] involved in the plot: [[spoiler:''he's'' the suit the Murderer used and, later, died in]].
* HellIsThatNoise: Its "scream" is an animal-like hiss that, rather than sounding angry or vicious, sounds like it's in unbearable pain. Pun '''not''' intended. [[spoiler:As TheReveal shows, it sounds like that for a damn good reason.]]
* ImplacableMan: Suggested by his hairless lower half, which resembles nothing so much as a rotting Terminator, and glowing irises. Unlike the first and second generation animatronics, Springtrap does not patrol a restaurant or attempt to stuff people into a suit, and he has no ambiguity about his motives other than to ''kill''.
* ItCanThink: Springtrap's movements while active are disturbingly fluid and human-like, in contrast to the jerky shambling of the previous animatronics. He also takes every path he can to get into your office, while the older generations only used preset routes. [[spoiler:Considering he's probably haunted by the ghost of an adult while the rest were possessed by children, this is understandable.]]
* LastOfHisKind: Springtrap appears to be the one animatronic left at the abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Or, at least, the only [[spoiler:real one]]. It is also the last of the classic "animatronic-suit" hybrids designed to retract their endoskeleton and let an actual person wear them. [[CruelAndUnusualDeath There was a reason for that.]]
* [[spoiler:ManInTheMachine: To borrow a quote from a [[Frachise/StarWars certain space ghost:]] "He's more machine now than man; twisted and evil."]]
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: Springtrap can be lured by playing a young child's voice in a room. While one could easily see this as [[spoiler:the Purple Man's spirit hearing another child he can kill]], one of Phone Guy's tapes played during the second night says that the animatronic in the suit is designed to walk towards any sound it hears so it remains near the children, suggesting the animatronic is in control, not [[spoiler:the murderer's spirit inside it]]. Of course, this is [[UnreliableExpositor Phone Guy]], and the game confirms the fact that [[spoiler:ghosts exist and can possess technology]], so make of it what you will.
* MeaningfulName: The reason he is called Springtrap? According to the final minigame, [[spoiler:getting stuffed into the suit was a trap sprung on the Purple Man. [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment With springs trapping him inside]].]]
** It's also note-worthy that a Spring Trap in real life is considered a humane method of vermin control, as they can kill instantly via breaking bones (generally the neck or spine). [[spoiler:The Murderer was killed by all the spring-locked animatronic parts in the suit breaking loose and crushing him, making the suit an actual Spring Trap.]]
*** Ironically, judging by how the [[spoiler:Purple Guy was twitching after getting crushed in the final Minigame,]] he ''didn't'' die instantly. He was in great pain and was either going through his death throes or was attempting to escape. Plus, who's to say that Springtrap's name doesn't also mean that he kills you instantly upon catching you?
* NoOSHACompliance: Springtrap is a walking "fuck you" to safety -- his suit was designed to be both a functional animatronic and a suit worn by humans. However, the method of shifting the animatronic parts out of the way was... [[{{Understatement}} not very safe]] (simply ''breathing'' could loosen a lock and kill/injure the user), and it was hastily retired after multiple spring failures. [[spoiler:The Purple Man found this out the hard way.]]
* NotQuiteDead: Possibly. [[spoiler:[[http://oi61.tinypic.com/mbn0hc.jpg Brightening the photo in the article detailing Fazbear's Fright burning down reveals Springtrap in the background]], meaning he may still be alive. Combined with the article mentioning that [[SequelHook some items were salvaged and set to be sold at auction...]]]]
* NothingIsScarier: Unlike the animatronics in the previous two games, it's never been explicitly stated what Springtrap will do to you if he catches you. Though considering the [[SlasherSmile look on his face]] and [[spoiler:[[SerialKiller who's inside him]]]], [[TakeOurWordForIt it's probably better that way]].
* OffscreenTeleportation: As per usual for the animatronics, Springtrap moves and attacks when not being watched, [[IKnowYoureWatchingMe taking advantage of when the cameras briefly become defective.]] It is, however, more understandable to have him in your face when you were repeatedly blacking out from a faulty ventilation system. Also, the control monitors aren't large enough to cover the whole screen, so you'll catch glimpses of Springtrap moving towards the door and then the inside of the office before he forces either monitor down to yell at you.
* PredecessorVillain: The third game's Golden Freddy minigame may suggest that Springtrap and Golden Freddy were the first two animatronics created at Fredbear's Family Diner. That would make Springtrap (then Spring Bonnie) the prototype of the Bonnies we've grown to know and hate.[[note]][[NightmareFetishist Or love.]][[/note]]
* ThePunishment: A rather...unintentional example, but he fits most of the criteria. [[spoiler:As the Murderer, he was an extreme danger, but he was still a mortal man. Now, as Springtrap, he gets [[AndIMustScream a type of]] [[ArtificialZombie functional immortality]], the strength of the bots, and ''perhaps'' the ability to send out hallucinations.]]
* RageHelm: The foam around the helmet has eaten away to resemble an evil grimace, [[spoiler:when Purple Guy's actual expression is one of abject agony]].
* TheReveal: The fifth's night recording from Phone Guy heavily implies that [[spoiler:it was Springtrap, and not Golden Freddy as was previously thought, who the Murderer wore as a suit to lure away and murder the Missing Children]], thus adding another layer of irony to the final minigame. Speaking of said final minigame, [[spoiler:the Murderer's rotting corpse is revealed to be inside the Springtrap suit, [[DeadAllAlong and has been for a while,]] potentially accompanied by [[HauntedTechnology his soul.]]]]
* SchmuckBait: When multiple and simultaneous spring lock failures occurred at one of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza's sister establishments, the classical suits were discontinued. [[spoiler:When the Purple Man tried to hide inside Springtrap...]]
* SealedEvilInACan: The Fazbear's Fright crew found him inside a boarded-up room in the first game's location (one that was not included on the maps programmed into the animatronics, nor visible to the security guard), and brought him over to Fazbear's Fright as one of the attractions. [[spoiler:He also happens to [[SealedInAPersonShapedCan function as the can for]] [[BiggerBad the Murderer.]]]]
* ShoutOut: Could be argued that it's one to [[Film/DonnieDarko Frank]], seeing how they share some similarities: [[spoiler:both of them are ghosts stuck in a bunny suit, both killed while in it. ''However'', while Frank tries to [[TheAtoner make up for his past actions]], the Murderer simply continues what he had been doing in life: killing people.]]
* SkeleBot9000: Much of this animatronic's foam covering is gone, and his metal feet are completely bare. His fixed rictus and missing eyelids evokes a skull.
* SlasherSmile: His deteriorated costume gives him a very unnerving one. Incidentally, unlike Bonnie and Toy Bonnie, it possesses a full set of teeth... [[note]]...''just like Shadow Bonnie.''[[/note]]
* StealthExpert:
** He ''can'' be seen in the second teaser image for the third game, but he's so well-hidden that making out an outline of him is very hard unless brightened.
** Also, unlike the other animatronics, which usually appeared front and center on the camera feeds, Springtrap usually stays in the corners of rooms, making it difficult to notice him with the camera. This makes sense because [[spoiler:he was a SerialKiller in life trying to cover up his crimes, as opposed to a bunch of little kids seeking justice.]]
** He's so sneaky, he managed to hide from players in the Nightmare Mode ending by being extremely well-concealed in [[spoiler:the newspaper blurb]].
* ThoseTwoAnimals: The Golden Freddy mini-game revealed that Springtrap (then called Spring-Bonnie, according to one of the phone calls) was Golden Freddy's only stage partner at one time.
* {{Undercrank}}: Had this in the trailers something fierce. The ending implied that these twitches were actually [[spoiler:the Murderer's death throes as the Springtrap suit sliced and diced him]].
* WalkingSpoiler: Due to [[spoiler:his being the suit worn by the Murderer -- in life ''and'' death, ironically enough]].

->''"Uh, the most important thing you want to watch for, is the ventilation. Look, this place will give you the spooks, man, and if you let that ventilation go offline, then you'll start seeing some crazy stuff, man. Keep that air a-flowin'!"''
-->-- '''Phone Dude'''

In Phone Dude's opening call on Night 1, he mentions that the ventilation system needs to be kept functional or else you'll start seeing things. The Phantoms are the end result of not doing this, and while they can't kill you, they can certainly give you a good scare and give Spring Trap time to get to you.
----
* BehindTheBlack: The Phantom Mangle head texture is hidden behind the Office window until its hallucination is triggered, upon which it rises up behind it, dropping down again once the hallucination ends.
* CompositeCharacter: Phantom Freddy has regular Freddy's eyes, teeth, and ability to stand upright and Golden Freddy's missing ear, protruding wires, and (if you brighten the image) color.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Especially in Balloon Boy's case, but like Springtrap, they all are much filthier and generally more unnerving to look at than the animatronics from the first two games.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: [[spoiler:They all have a burned appearance, which turns out to be prophetic of the fate of Fazbear's Fright.]]
* GhostlyGoals: The interpretation of them as ghosts sets up two possibilities: either they are the ghosts of past victims trying to scare you out of Fazbear's Fright because you are in danger around Springtrap and/or they knew or caused [[spoiler:Fazbear's Fright to burn down and didn't want you to die in the fire]]... ''or'' they are extensions of one ghost, that is [[spoiler:the Murderer's]], trying to unbalance you and screw with your equipment for Springtrap to kill you.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: All of them have [[UncannyValley much more human]] versions of these than usual, instantly marking them twice as creepy[[note]]Though they are said to just be hallucinations[[/note]].
* {{Hallucinations}}: They are all this, so they thankfully can't kill you. Doesn't make the fact that they WILL jumpscare you and they look like more decrepit versions of Freddy, Chica, Foxy, Balloon Boy, and the Puppet any more comforting. They can, however, give Spring Trap more time to get closer to you, since you need to restart the ventilation in order to get them to leave.
* TheHeavy: Looks like [[spoiler:Freddy]] returns to this role after his first appearance, although incapable of directly harming you.
* HiveMind: Since they have eyes like Springtrap's, one interpretation of them is that they are [[spoiler:additional manifestations of the Murderer's ghost trying to set you up for an easier kill at his hands as Springtrap]].
* JumpScare: Four of them do this, but it won't end the game.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: Officially, they're just hallucinations caused by a lack of oxygen. However, they're also called "phantoms", and there's little indication on why the protagonist would know so much about the "ancient" pizzeria's history (Mangle, for example). The two most common interpretations are that they're paranoia-induced hallucinations combining the fear of the animatronics with the anxiety about fire risk, or that the spirits have returned to Fazbear's Fright and are trying to frighten you away.
* OneOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers:
** The Phantom Puppet won't lunge at you like the other Phantoms do. No, it'll just sit there. Right in front of you. And ''STARE.''
** Phantom Mangle also counts, to the point where it's not even acknowledged by the game. It ''is'' identifiable as Mangle, though, due to its figure on the camera feed, its pose behind the office window, and its [[HellIsThatNoise static noises]].
* ProphetEyes: Their creepy white eyes are the only parts of them that aren't blackened and burnt.
* RealAfterAll: The Phantom Puppet may be this. [[http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20150305215438/freddy-fazbears-pizza/images/thumb/f/f0/298.png/609px-298.png Since when do ghosts/hallucinations have reflections?]]
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDUaqqJGtGk There's also a theory that the Phantom Mangle is this trope too,]] due to being misidentified as a prop and something about trap doors.
* TookALevelInBadass: Amazingly, Balloon Boy. Yeah, in the second game he was somewhat of a threat, but could still be easily warded off using the mask. ''Here'', however, he can randomly appear on any of the cameras, jump-scaring you if you don't clock away and making you waste time rebooting the ventilation system. He also looks much, ''much'' more scary than last time.
* WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises: They all appear to have this since their eyes are literally only a glowing white iris in a field of blackness.
* YouDontLookLikeYou: While called Phantom Freddy, it's actually ''Golden'' Freddy, since they share the same appearance as in FiveNightsAtFreddys2 (Hat at irregular position, missing ear, wires where said missing ear should be and has a golden tilt.) [[spoiler:It's symbolic that Freddy himself is not present, only finally [[NightmareFace showing up again]] in FiveNightsAtFreddys4 as Nightmare Freddy.]]
