* ColorCodedEyes: His green eyes symbolize his power over Jenova and the Lifestream, and his otherworldly nature.

* GreenEyes: His eyes symbolize his power over Jenova and the Lifestream, and his otherworldly nature.

Added DiffLines:

* DarkAndTroubledPast: He was experimented on in the womb by his own father, being implanted with Jenova cells under the false belief it would make him a Cetra. When he born and failed to display any power over the Lifestream but did display supernatural strength and ability, Shinra decided raise him as a warrior and turned him into the first SOLDIER. Shinra also lied to him about his parents, telling him that his mother was a deceased woman named Jenova.

Added DiffLines:

* DiabolusExMachina: His murder of President Shinra is this. He had barely been mentioned in the story by that point and he effectively shows up out of nowhere and goes on a killing spree throughout Shinra HQ, stabbing the game's previous main villain in the back and throwing the plot off the rails.

Added DiffLines:

* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Shinra never explained to him that his birth parents are Hojo and Lucrecia or told him about the experiments that were done to him in the womb. Instead, they lied to him and said that his mother was a woman name Jenova who died giving birth to him. When he learned about the Jenova Project, he assumed that he was some kind of artificial creature created from Jenova's remains and went insane.

* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Despite being one of the most famous examples, Sephiroth was actually a subversion when he first appeared. He was not effeminate in his original appearance (one of his defining traits being his incredibly badass combat prowess), was not a Trickster (despite being a ManipulativeBastard) and, before going mad, his stoicism outweighed any SugarAndIcePersonality traits. The later games tend to play the trope straighter, with his white hair emphasizing his villainous nature and connection to Jenova.

* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Despite the above, it doesn't explain how a level 1 Cloud was able to beat him, let alone survive being stabbed by the Masamune.
** Supernova, an attack that obliterates the entire solar system, is not only incapable of actually killing your party or doing any actual damage to the Planet itself for some reason , but is also significantly more dangerous than his actual EvilPlan to destroy the world with Meteor (it's possible that the attack actually is another Meteor, just directed at the Sun rather than the world, but that doesn't explain how Meteor takes 7 days to hit the Planet but Supernova takes about a minute total).

** The international release's version of Supernova, an attack that obliterates the entire solar system, is not only incapable of actually killing your party or doing any actual damage to the Planet itself for some reason , reason, but is also significantly more dangerous than his actual EvilPlan to destroy the world with Meteor (it's possible that the attack actually is another Meteor, just directed at the Sun rather than the world, but that doesn't explain how Meteor takes 7 days to hit the Planet but Supernova takes about a minute total). In the Japanese version, he just conjures an exploding star that deals a significant amount of damage and only destorys a few planets.

* GeniusBruiser: He demonstrates that he has an advanced knowledge of science and slipping into insanity was prompted in part by spending several nights locking himself away in an underground library to study pretty much every book and and piece of research into the JENOVA project he could get his hands on; he later shows an in-depth knowledge of the history of the Planet and the Cetra civilization. Hojo (whose work Sephiroth considers inferior to Gast, implying he is read up on both) concedes that Sephiroth outsmarted him and proved impossible to predict, and he shows himself to be a brilliant chess master and ManipulativeBastard of the highest order once Disc 2 gets going and reveals that he's been playing you like a fiddle the entire game. As the most decorated veteran of SOLDIER ever he is also well-versed in battle tactics, strategy and various forms of combat as well, making for a very dangerous enemy.

* RatedMForManly: Back in the day, his proficence with the sword, stamina and strength were the defining traits of Sephiroth. Nowadays, it's complicated.

* EvilIsPetty: Averted originally, as his God complex and omnicidal tendencies initially manifested after a legitimately traumatic revelation regarding his origins. However, as he continued to survive thanks to ThePowerOfHate, his motive started to decay to simply spiting Cloud, the guy who'd been thwarting his plans.

* ActuallyADoombot: The "Sephiroth" the heroes face through most of the game is actually a Jenova construct bearing his appearance. The real one fell down the Nibelheim Reactor in his battle with Cloud, had his remains crystallized in Mako at the Northern Crater and is fought as the final boss.

* ForWantOfANail: He was considering retiring from SOLDIER at the time of the Niebelheim. If he'd stuck to his guns or just retired early, it's entirely possible that all of Final Fantasy VII and its aftermath could have been averted.

* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: Sephiroth's playable segment during the flashback in the original game perfectly display key traits of him at the time: being absurdly powerful and downright invincible and AFatherToHisMen, who will always bring Cloud back to life when he's downed.

Him being the commanding officer of the mission is also reflected in gameplay: he's controlled by the AI and can't be ordered around by the player (or level 1 Cloud, for that matter), nor can any of his equipment be altered or removed.

Added DiffLines:
