Poisonous Friend is no longer a trope

* PoisonousFriend: And very ''very'' subtle about it too. Junko has spent some of her interactions with the Pharaoh trying to guide him in the direction of falling into despair. And his duels with [[DrunkOnTheDarkSide Rafael]] and [[UnstoppableRage Weevil]] aren't helping matters...

[[folder: Junko Enoshima]]
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: Junko has to try her best not to [[{{Corpsing}} roll on the floor laughing]] at London Kurioboh's jokes during the Grand Championship's opening ceremonies.
* AlphaBitch: ''Is she ever''. She's gorgeous, popular, and a highly-respected gyaru in society. She's also ''evil to the core''.
* AscendedExtra: She initially appears in only a minor role during the Battle City arc, only to take a more active involvement in the story by that arc's conclusion, starting with [[spoiler: torturing Ishizu into a remnant of Despair, killing Odion, and breaking Marik back into his SuperpoweredEvilSide.]]
* BerserkButton: Doesn't like it when she doesn't get her desired Despair. [[HopeBringer Makoto]] taking his defeat against Yugi in Battle City in stride leaves her screaming into a pillow.
** Recently developed a new one: trying to take Yugi from her. [[spoiler:Vivian Wong found out [[FateWorseThanDeath the hard way]] what the response is.]]
* BigBadFriend: This seems to be Junko's intentions for the moment as she has spent her screen time amongst Yugi and his friends very benign and rather helpful. [[ParanoiaFuel Gird your loins]].
* BlackComedy: A good number of her quips and antics give off this vibe. Comedic in that they can be hilarious, black for the fact that well...it's freaking ''Junko'' we are talking about here.
* BreakThemByTalking: A favorite tactic of hers, especially in this fic. She uses this to [[spoiler:[[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwash Ishizu]]]], give Rafael a ReasonYouSuckSpeech, and get under Kaiba's skin by pointing out that he and Joey [[NotSoDifferentRemark aren't so different]] despite Kaiba's hostility towards Joey.
* CastingAShadow[=/=]DarkIsEvil: In Duel Monsters, a majority of her monsters are DARK-Attribute and are mainly Fiend-Typed, reflecting her true demonic nature.
* ColdBloodedTorture: [[spoiler:Inflicts this on poor Ishizu. Later gives Rafael and Vivian Wong some as well (thankfully off-screen).]]
* TheCorrupter: [[spoiler:She tortures, through various means, Ishizu into becoming a Remnant, and then reveals this to Marik to [[DespairEventHorizon push him off the edge]]. She does the same to Rafael, and is implied to do the same to Ruruka.]]
* DidntSeeThatComing: [[spoiler: As she and Matsuda discover, Junko genuinely fell in love with Yami during the Orichalcos arc. This (and her subsequent lack of usual responses to Matsuda) legitimately caught her off-guard.]]
* DomesticAbuse: Physically and emotionally horrible to her sister.
* EngineeredPublicConfession: Pulls one of these on [[spoiler: Rafael]] in Chapter 79, recording his direct threat on her as part of her ploy to slander him in everyone's eyes.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Unfortunately, the more Junko loves someone, the more she wants to see them suffer despair at her own two hands. If she's in love with someone they need to run and get as far away from her as possible.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Junko decides she doesn't want to kill Hajime and Chiaki's baby, but not because he's a baby and more because she can do more despair inducing things by leaving Izuru alive than with his corpse. Unlike most examples of this trope, it only serves to show just how twisted Junko really is.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: During Chapter 73, when Yami reveals that Yugi offered his soul to the Orichalcos in his place, Junko actually feels confused if not outright distraught of why someone like Yugi would do such a thing.
* EvilIsNotAToy: Junko finds out that her messing around with the Orichalcos magic caused her fabricated crush on Yugi and the Pharaoh to turn real, a realization that comes as a surprise to both her and her now ex-boyfriend Yasuke Matsuda.
* ExactWords: During the duel with Seto Kaiba in Noah's virtual world arc, disguised as Monokuma, Junko promises to tell Kaiba where she sent Mokuba to if he won. Come the duel's end, [[ForegoneConclusion and Kaiba's victory]], Kaiba demands to know where Mokuba is, but Junko remarks that she only promised to tell Kaiba where he is, but never specified she would say how to get there. Kaiba [[HeroicSafeMode was not amused]].
* FemmeFatale: Implied, what with dressing up like Pegasus's deceased wife to get in his good books. Outright confirmed in her interactions with Yami where she's not above applying her charms to mess around with his mind.
* GreaterScopeVillain: Junko is not the starring villain of Battle City, Virtual World, or Orichalcos arcs, but any Danganronpa fan knows this twisted little psychopath is cooking ''something'' up.
* HoneyTrap: In addition to crushing Yami's psyche and making him more prone to despair, Junko also seems to be keen on seducing him or Yugi to snatch them from under Téa's nose. See TakeThatKiss below.
* HopeCrusher: Junko loves despair to fetish levels, and loves nothing more than spreading it. A particular favorite is winning or watching someone win right when their opponent thought they had it in the bag.
-->'''Junko:''' I want to see that raw determination you showed Crowler...just so I can knock it down.
* InsistentTerminology: When Kaiba likens Monokuma to a four-year-old's interpretation of a panda, Junko, as Monokuma, corrects him in that it's a 10-year-old's interpretation, likely referring to how Monokuma was made by Monaca Towa.
* JerkassHasAPoint: As soul-crushing as it was for [[spoiler: Rafael]], Junko ''does'' make several good points in regards to questioning his motives. She also calls him out [[spoiler: ignoring his sister Sonia in favor of serving Dartz despite Sonia's condition is pretty much living proof that Dartz's words were lies. Suffice to say, Rafal does not take this well ''at all''.]]
* KnightOfCerebus: There is a ''sharp'' tonal difference between [[spoiler:Chapter 61]] and the rest of the fic, where she begins her plans to destroy the world. The author even bumps up the fic's rating to M starting from the Orichalcos arc.
* ManipulativeBitch: This being Junko, you can expect a lot of moments where she shows this:
** She wormed her way into Pegasus's favor by making emotional appeals and doing housework. And occasionally, [[{{Squick}} dressing up as his dead wife]].
** She also worms her way into Yugi's circle of friends by pretending to be a good person all as part of her ploy to corrupt [[spoiler:Yami]] as part of her long-term plans.
** [[spoiler:To say nothing of [[TortureMakesYouEvil what she did to Ishizu]]]].
** Taken to the extreme levels in Chapters 79-80 where she not only [[spoiler: defeats Rafael before the Pharoah can on top of also emotionally and mentally breaking him]], but also initiates a WoundedGazelleGambit to make ''everyone'' think she's the victim among the two duelists. And even when displaying her true persona, it can easily be hand-waved by the Orichalcos corrupting her.
** During chapter 100, she has a long talk with Yami and Yugi about her behavior, but the conversation ends up switching topics to the point that Junko is able to get them to agree that their belief in [[BecauseDestinySaysSo destiny]] isn't all its cracked up to be, citing examples of how to prove that destiny is only what you make it.
* NotMeThisTime: When Téa sees Yami DrunkOnTheDarkSide in chapter 73, she immediately assumes Junko is responsible and slaps her across the face. Junko quickly affirms, with supporting evidence, that, for once, she's not to blame.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Upon meeting up with Matsuda, she ''doesn't'' immediately press her breasts to his back as she usually does [[spoiler: because she now loves Yami instead of him]]. This actually prompts her to get her head examined.
* PrecisionFStrike: During her duel with Rafael, she mimics a line from Abridged regarding his use of Dreadscythe and calls him a "Giant ''fucking'' hypocrite".
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Delivers one to Weevil by [[WebVideo/YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries quoting the abridged series]], including a mention of [[JokeCharacter MushroomMan]].
** She also delivers one to Rafael that also doubles as a BreakingSpeech [[spoiler:during their duel]].
** Downplayed during her duel with Zigfried. Junko admits she could be going harder on the German fop, but ultimately cuts herself short because if she went farther, she'd have to out Zigfried for his true colors in front of everyone, which both know would result in Zigfried's immediate DQ. Why Junko didn't do this [[ForTheEvulz when she loves doing it]] remains a mystery.
* ScrewDestiny: It's unknown if this is just how she feels, or if she's just spouting it to further her own ends--this is Junko after all--but she definitely seems to dislike the concept of destiny and fate. Both reasons make sense:
** If she's being genuine, it could stem from how she wants things to be more unpredictable and the idea that events are preordained or unavoidable mock the very basis of her talent and the ability to see infinite possibilities.
** If she's just spouting platitudes, the longer she continues to advocate for this mentality, the easier it becomes for her to manipulate Yugi and Yami [[BecauseDestinySaysSo who are of the latter mentality]].
* StepfordSmiler: Type C, aka "looks nice and friendly on the outside, ''out for blood'' on the inside."
* {{Troll}}: Never more evident than while posing as Monokuma. [[spoiler:She also invokes a case of DidTheyOrDidntThey with Yami until she busts a gut laughing, unable to keep up the facade any longer and comes clean that she was just messing with him]].
* TakeThatKiss: [[spoiler:Junko manipulates Yami into kissing her after he defeats her in a duel while the Seal of Orichalcos is activated. She then invokes this trope by deliberately opening her eyes and making eye contact with Téa, just to irritate the brunette]].
* VillainHasAPoint: Junko's [[spoiler:betrayal of Dartz]] is justified by her by pointing out [[spoiler:If the Seal of Orichalcos is going to take the heroes' souls anyway, she may as well be the one getting the 500 attack point boost]].
** Yami and Yugi also find it difficult to argue with her during some of her speeches of how she views the world in chapter 100.
* VillainousCrush: Develops one on Yugi (both of them) at the tail-end of the Orichalcos arc, much to her surprise.
* VillainTakesAnInterest: Makoto's determination, luck, and optimistic nature catch her eye immediately. The fic also starts when Junko becomes interested in Duel Monsters as a potential way to bring despair.
** She also appears to be quite interested in Yugi Muto.
** In chapter 73, she explicitly refers to Rafael as "Not boring" due to his speeches greatly resembling her own philosophy. [[spoiler:She unfortunately makes good on that interest in chapter 85]].
* WeCanRuleTogether: Once she sets her twisted little black heart on Yugi, she intends to make him her "King of Despair".
* WoundedGazelleGambit: Pulls this in Chapter 79 during her duel against [[spoiler: Rafael, all to garner sympathy from Yami and everyone else present. Suffice to say, it ''works''.]]
* XanatosSpeedChess: Junko is the master of this.
** Her actions in the Orichalcos arc are this. She pretended to join Dartz and then took the Orichalcos seal with her, just so she could spend time among Yugi and his friends, [[BigBadFriend acting as their friend and ally]]. She used this to great advantage so that, ultimately, [[spoiler:Yami would take her soul and Dartz would be gotten out of her way by the good guys, leaving her in the good graces of the protagonists, and able to blame all of her horrible actions on the Orichalcos making her BrainwashedAndCrazy]]. And it ''works''. [[ParanoiaFuel Time will tell how this will pan out in the long run]].
* {{Yandere}}: She becomes this for Yugi. [[spoiler:She only decided to [[FateWorseThanDeath do what she did]] to Vivian Wong after the other girl insisted [[DisproportionateRetribution that she'd make Yugi her boyfriend]].]]
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: A possible interpretation of her [[spoiler:killing Zigfried so that he couldn't turn on her later]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Mukuro Ikusaba]]
* BigSisterInstinct: Referring to Mukuro as an "enabler" to Junko's behavior aside, she at least ''tries'' to be a good big sister to the world's worst little sister alive.
* BroadStrokes: The prologue shows that unlike in canon, she ends up participating in the Killing Game as herself instead of impersonating her sister Junko. However what caused this change and what in entails is still unknown.
* GracefulLoser: Mukuro takes her loss to Makoto with calm acceptance.
* LoveAtFirstSight: She develops a crush on Makoto almost instantly.
* [[MyMasterRightOrWrong My Sister Right Or Wrong]]: Is completely and utterly devoted to supporting her sister, no matter how immoral her ambitions are. Rafael actually calls her out on this mindset of hers at the end of Chapter 73.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: While "nemesis" might not be the proper word for it, Mukuro is certainly this to any would-be opponent of hers. She foregoes the cheesy one-liners and flourishing hand gestures, keeping her body still and speaking rather robotically of abilities activating. Makoto even tells her she can afford to loosen up a little.
* TheStoic: Mukuro keeps a level head at almost all times and rarely expresses emotion.
* UndyingLoyalty: To her sister Junko.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Poor dear is completely confused by the feelings Makoto stirs in her.

* NotSoDifferent: To Kaiba. Each of them accuses the other of riding on others' coattails to get where they are, while declaring that ''they'' had to work hard to get to their current position. * BornLucky: He hasn't been accepted as the Ultimate Lucky Student yet, but his luck is definitely watching over him. Unlike Nagito's, which goes in extreme cycles of good-bad, Makoto's works by causing apparently-bad luck that turns out to be good luck in disguise, like making him accidentally discard Swords of Revealing Light in his duel against Ishtar, forcing him to play something else that ultimately prevents his defeat.

Added DiffLines:

* UnluckilyLucky: As usual, Makoto's brand of Ultimate Luck takes the form of ''seemingly'' bad luck that is actually good luck in disguise. For example, he tries to play Swords of Revealing Light against Ishizu, only to discover that he had ''discarded it by mistake'' during the previous turn. It certainly sounds like he's screwed, but Ishizu was ready to counter Swords of Revealing Light since she had forseen him playing it, so she's actually the one screwed as her vision gets sent OffTheRails and she has no idea what to expect next, allowing Makoto to win.

* ScrewDestiny: His mindset is that the future is never set in stone and can always be changed. Additionally, his luck is so powerful it ''literally'' screws with Ishizu's future-seeing abilities.
* ShipTease: With Sayaka in Chapter 11 and Mukuro in the Chapter 21-23 mini-arc. And once the two start interacting in chapter 97, both of them at the same time.
* ShutUpHannibal: Gives one of these to [[spoiler:Noah]] after [[spoiler:he mocks Mai's TakingTheBullet for Joey]]. Even Makoto has limits to his patience and good will after all.
* WeakButSkilled: Makoto doesn't have the raw power or complex strategies of some other duelists--but he ''does'' have a wide assortment of knowledge of dueling strategies, come from following Yugi and Kaiba's careers closely, and has been using his deck for years, granting him intimate knowledge and comfort with it. Combined with his luck, it makes him a smart and tough cookie to pin down.
* WhenHeSmiles: It makes Mukuro practically fall in LoveAtFirstSight.
* WideEyedIdealist: He doesn't just want [[spoiler:Miho and Noah]] to be saved; he truly believes they can be. And, thus far for Miho, he's right. As for Noah, he still believes this even ''after'' [[spoiler: Noah used Mokuba to cheat on his victory against Kaiba, and turning Ibuki, Mai and ''especially'' Komaru to stone.]]

[[folder: Celestia Ludenburg]]
* AdaptationalBadass: She was already competent to start with in canon, but here she's a freaking treat. Not only is she one of the more skilled duelists in the story, but she is putting that gambling talent of hers to work given her collusion with [[ArcVillain Marik.]]
* BerserkButton: Bringing up [[spoiler:Taeko Yasuhiro, her real name]]. Johnson pushing this button is the first thing to break her composure in the fic.
* BornLucky: Not as much as Makoto or Nagito, but as a gambler she does rely on quite a bit of luck. It usually pans out for her. [[spoiler:Her luck is such that it's even able to beat ''a rigged game''.]]
* CastingAShadow: Starting with the Canadian Nationals arc, Celeste runs a vampire deck, an archetype of dark-attribute monsters
* ChallengeSeeker: Why she enjoys her duels against Joey and Yugi so much--they're giving her a ''challenge'', and she hasn't had one in way too long.
* TheChessmaster: [[spoiler:She plays Marik ''and'' the heroes for fools during Yugi's duel with Joey.]]
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: If the side she's on isn't working out for her, Celeste has no problems leaving, usually finding some way to screw them over on her way out.
* ConsummateLiar: She ''is'' the "Queen of Liars", after all.
* CurbstompBattle: Delivers this to a Rare Hunter in her debut duel in Chapter 4 and later to Byakuya.
* EveryoneHasStandards: When she sees how upset Chiaki is before their duel, Celeste goes out of her way to deliver a pep talk. She has no problems psychologically breaking an opponent ''while'' playing, but she certainly won't start a battle until everyone is on the same ground.
* [[GentlemanSnarker Gentlewoman Snarker]]: She has a very poisonous tongue, but always whips out her insults in a polite manner and with a calm face.
* GracefulLoser: She always makes it her policy to maintain an image of calm and grace, even when she loses, and holds no ill will for her loses to Chiaki, Joey, [[spoiler:and Yugi.]]
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Celeste works with whoever she damn well pleases. [[spoiler:This includes Marik, then seemingly backstabbing Marik to help the heroes, then backstabbing him for real.]]
* HeelRealization: [[spoiler: Goes through one of this when she realizes just how much of a genuine threat Yami Marik is to everyone around especially after seeing what he did to Mahiru. This causes her to start helping out Joey and the others to increase their chances in defeating Marik.]]
* NobleBirdOfPrey: While she has used various assortments of monsters throughout her duels, she seems to have a particular preference for Winged Beast monsters with most of them encompassing the stronger monsters in her deck. She abandons this trope for vampires later. See CastingAShadow above.
* ProfessionalGambler: It ''is'' her talent. Luck and skill are both games she knows well and embraces.
* ShipTease: Has these with Marik, Yugi and ''especially'' Joey.
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:Losing to Joey, then Yugi, and still being treated as a friend despite her multiple betrayals gives Celeste much to consider. She's still her usual haughty self, but slightly nicer to them both.]]
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Yugi tells her this several times over.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Byakuya Togami]]
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Like Kaiba, "nice guy" is still far too much of a stretch; but while Byakuya is still an elitist, condescending jerk, he comes off as less of a {{Jerkass}} than his canon self.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Plays a Monarch deck during the Battle City finals.
* CurbstompBattle: Has been on both the delivering and receiving end of this. Delivery-wise, he does this too Chihiro as a warm-up/warning to Seto Kaiba. Receiving-wise, he gets this from both Celeste and Nagito in ''quick succession''.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The Canada Nationals arc features him as one of the primary main characters, alongside Joey and Mai.
* DrowningMySorrows: Does this at his suite after losing to Joey during the finals (and mind you, going off Chiaki's age, he's ''only fifteen''!). When Joey and Mai confront him about the fact that he's only a minor, he simply replies with "[[InsaneTrollLogic I am Byakuya Togami]]."
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** Egotistical {{Jerkass}} he is, even he will not stoop to certain lows. While he thinks Mai turning down his offer to bear his children is something she'll regret, he's not going to force himself on her.
** He also refused to cooperate with the Big Five in taking down [=KaibaCorp=], stating that if he ever wanted to do so, it would be under his own terms and within fair play.
** When his company's history of slave trafficking is brought up, he sniffs that ''he'll'' use his money more ethically.
** He also expresses disgust at Noah using Mokuba as a human shield.
* GentlemanSnarker: He's a ''bit'' less rude than in canon, but still as snarky, making him more in line with this. In response to Komaru snapping at him to be careful of disrespecting Sweet Orchard in the presence of hundreds of the group's fans, he dryly says "Oh yes, dozens of rabid teenage females hoarding me because of something I said. Haven't dealt with ''that'' before."
* GracefulLoser: As much as it pains him to even ''lose'', he will at least acknowledge when others have beaten him and takes his losses with dignity.
* HumiliationConga: Not an entirely undeserved one, but he loses to Kaiba, Celeste and Nagito in ''rapid succession'' during the first part of the tournament. This results in him seeking to train under Solomon Muto and constructing his new deck just in time for the finals.
* KickTheDog: Calling Chihiro's monster, given when Byakuya wins their duel, "mediocre".
* NotSoDifferent: To Kaiba. Each of them accuses the other of riding on others' coattails to get where they are, while declaring that ''they'' had to work hard to get to their current position. Thing is, that declaration is ''true'' in both cases--Byakuya had to fight his own siblings to get to the top of the Togami Corporation, while Kaiba was an orphan who had to win his way out with chess.
* ThePerfectionist: "A Togami strives to be perfect in all things", as he puts it.
* PetTheDog:
** Defends Joey when Kaiba calls him a talentless hack, keep in mind this immediately ''after'' Joey defeats him in the Battle City finals.
** He also backs Makoto's claim to [[spoiler: Miho in Chapter 47 that Sayaka never stopped thinking about her even after her death]] although he immediately corrects Makoto in saying that he said this just to move the game forward and not out of sentimental care.
** During the Canada Nationals arc: Not only does he make it so that Joey can participate in the tournament, but he also helps him become an official Pro Duelist. Somewhat mitigated when he later tells Joey he only did so to fuel his own agendas, but still.
* PutOnABus: During the Orichalcos arc.
** TheBusCameBack: During the Canada Nationals arc.
* TheRival: To Kaiba, given that their companies are competitors. Kaiba doesn't really recognize him as a ''true'' equal, but still gets irritated by him.
* SelfMadeMan: He had to work hard for his position in the Togami Corporation, despite the wealth he was born into, and he's completely self-taught in dueling.
* SkepticNoLonger: At first dismissive of things like "friendship", "belief", and "The Heart of the Cards", Byakuya has come around to accept and use the last after losing three times in a row, and is slowly coming around to the first two.
* ThisCannotBe: Expresses this whenever he loses.
* UnskilledButStrong: His strategy with his first deck was simply overpowering his opposition using low-leveled beatsticks and other cards that only money could buy. This changes by the time of the Battle City finals and after his training under Solomon Muto.

[[folder: Kyoko Kirigiri]]
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: As to be expected of her.
* DemotedToExtra: Doesn't have much presence after arriving at Hope's Peak, mainly due to her loner tendencies.
* EarlyBirdCameo: First appears in the prologue before making her first full-fledged appearance during the Orichalcos arc in Chapter 67.
* TheSmartGirl: Plays this role alongside Chihiro amongst Yukizome's group during the Orichalcos arc.
* TheStoic: As per canon, she constantly presents herself in a professional and calculated manner.

[[folder: Leon Kuwata]]
* BatterUp: Uses a FIRE Baseball-themed deck.
* CasanovaWannabe: Tries hitting on Chiaki within seconds of meeting her, unforunately for him Chiaki was far from interested.
* LeeroyJenkins: Tries going for a OneHitKill against Chiaki but at the expense of his defenses. Chiaki then proceeds to decimate him with no trouble whatsover.
* MythologyGag: Him being the very first opponent in the story is likely a reference to him being the first killer in the first ''Danganronpa'' game.
* ZergRush: His Ultimate Baseball deck focuses on mass-swarming Ultimate Baseball monsters to overwhelm the opposition. Unfortunately they tend to be on the weak side so the less numbers they have, the worse it is for them.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Hifumi Yamada]]
* LightTheWay[=/=]FairySexy: Uses a LIGHT Fairy Deck composed of various female Fairy monsters.
