* DependingOnTheArtist: The details of Hyakkimaru's appearance tend to vary significantly between adaptations (or cameos in other Tezuka productions), ranging from a rugged, muscular man whose prosthetics are undiscernible until removed in the 1969 anime to a slight, eerie boy who looks more like a doll than a real person in the [[Anime/Dororo2019 2019 anime]].

* AgeLift: Inverted. Interestingly enough, despite his younger and less muscular looks, he's ''older'' in the 2019 anime - sixteen years old, while his manga counterpart was fourteen.
* AmbiguousGender: Not him, but everyone to ''him''. Since he only sees soul energy, he can't discern between men and women and only goes by the good or bad colors of the soul. This is only really the case in the 2019 version; in other adaptations and in the manga, he can somehow tell boy from girl even before he gets his sight back.

* AttackAttackAttack: At least in the 2019 adaptation, this seems to be his go-to strategy for dealing with demons. He won't stop until his target is killed, disregarding anything that might happen to him or to those around him as long as no one is in immediate danger. Jukai wonders if this isn't because he can't feel pain, and therefore has no normal self-preservation. Eventually, this crosses over into FearlessFool territory as he gets more of his parts back, as his injuries end up becoming more debilitating for him. * DetectEvil: Like with Biwa-Houshi, he can sense the energy of others and can tell what is edible, good/neutral, and evil.
* DisabledInTheAdaptation: While manga Hyakkimaru and 2019 anime Hyakkimaru are missing all the same parts, 2019 Hyakkimaru lacks most of the telepathic abilities the former had to bypass his lack of ears and vocal cords. Thus he starts the series off as entirely deaf and mute, whereas his manga counterpart could at least communicate verbally.

* DisabilitySuperpower: His lack of a central nervous system while piloting his prosthetic body in the 2019 adaptation actually gives him an edge in battle, as he [[FeelNoPain feels no pain,]] making him an unhesitating killing machine. It's an interesting take on the anime, since his quest to become more human gives him back these senses, among other problems.

* HidingTheHandicap: Notable for him hiding some ''massive'' disabilities with masterful use of {{Telepathy}}. His speech, hearing, and sight are masked by mouthing while telepathically communicating, while he hides his amputee status with realistic enough prosthetics. Averted in the 2019 version, where he's so isolated from the rest of the world that he can't even begin to hide it.

* MoralityChain: He acknowledges Dororo as his tie to being human in 2019 anime.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: Growing up deaf, blind, and mute, 2019 Hyakkimaru doesn't have a lot of options for communication. So when he does reach out to others, it's usually by touch--whether his theoretical conversation partner is comfortable with it or not.
* NoSocialSkills: In the 2019 anime. Growing up deaf, mute, blind, and largely isolated from people didn't exactly do much for his communication skills, verbal and nonverbal. After regaining most of his senses back and learning the bare-bones of vocabulary he becomes curious of the world and often approaches it with a childlike wonder.

* ScreamingWarrior: Downplayed in the 2019 anime but he's gained this status once he got his voice back, [[spoiler:baying with grief during his ExtremeMeleeRevenge against Mio's killers and]] doing so to call for Dororo during the Nokosaregumo fight. It might be in part because he hasn't quite gotten the hang of articulating words yet.
* SleepsWithBothEyesOpen: Having lived most of his life without eyelids, 2019 Hyakkimaru hasn't gotten into the habit of closing them while he sleeps. Luckily, he doesn't have real eyes to bear the damage.
* TheSpeechless: In the 2019 anime. [[spoiler:Even after regaining his voice at the end of episode 5, he's reluctant to use it, as he finds the sound of his own voice unpleasant--[[RealityEnsues and only knows about four words]]. He starts to speak more by Episode 13 of the 2019 Anime.]]
* SuddenlyVoiced: His first words aren't all that great, considering his was reeling from [[spoiler:his first love's death]]:

* TerseTalker: 2019 Hyakkimaru gradually becomes one. Even after he starts getting the hang of speaking, he often drops nouns, only uses simple present tense, and tends to resort to sentence fragments when speaking about direct or indirect objects he can't omit entirely.

* UnstoppableRage: While generally quiet there are two situations that bring him to a blinding rage:
** [[spoiler:In episode 6, after coming back to see Mio and the kids she was taking care of being murdered, he loses it and slaughters the samurai responsible. He nearly loses it when the samurai responsible for her murder appears in front of him in episode 12.]]
** [[spoiler:He explodes in rage when he realizes that Sabame is just like his father and is obsessed with killing all the demons he can find in episode 15.]]
** [[spoiler:He screams in fury when he realizes that his arms and eyes have been transplanted on to his brother and his attendants. To highlight this, his aura is ''blood red'', indicating he is very close to becoming a demon.]]

* WildChild: In the 2019 anime, as his lack of senses made it difficult to communicate with what little human contact he had growing up. Not only does he have NoSocialSkills, he doesn't even have ''language''.
* WonderChild: Especially in the 2019 anime, where Jukai discovers him while on the verge of a DespairEventHorizon in a manner implying that the Buddha brought them together.
* WouldntHitAGirl: Hyakkimaru's a gentleman despite his lack of complete awareness, so his earlier versions were more reserved about killing women. [[spoiler:He tells Dororo this when the kid asks for Hyakki to kill them, so he can make Dororo aware of themselves]]. In the 2019 version he has [[WouldHitAGirl less reservations]], given the second monster we saw disguised itself as a woman, but that can be justified as he can't see or distinguish between male and female soul energy.

* AdaptationalAttractiveness: Most adaptations make Dororo much [[AgeLift older]], and in the process much more visibly feminine along the way. When Dororo is kept as a child, the character design often makes the kid look more conventionally cute instead of scrappy.

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: In the 2019 anime adaptation, most of Dororo's reckless and HotBlooded tendencies are removed and he is far kinder and more worldy than the manga version, often acting as a genuine caretaker for Hyakkimaru who struggles with anything other than demon-slaying.

* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler:Hyakkimaru's increasingly obsession with killing all demons without regard for the consequences actually disgusts Dororo so much that she leaves him in episode 15.]]
* TheCaretaker: In the 2019 version. Being blind, deaf and lacking in social skills, Hyakkimaru can't fully take care of himself outside of hunting, so when Dororo joins him the kid basically acts as his eyes and ears, often feeding him and keeping him out of danger as well. A far cry from the {{Protectorate}} Dororo was in the original.
** In #19 he has an arguement with Hyakkimaru over why he shouldn't be randomly grabbing people's faces to greet them and it sounds exactly like a parent scolding their child. It even ends with ''[[BecauseISaidSo Because I say so.]]''

* DistressedDude: [[spoiler:Or more accurately DamselInDistress though her kidnappers didn't know so. At the end of episode 15 of the 2019 version, Dororo gets kidnapped by Itachi and his men to search for the hidden treasure that her parent hidden.]]

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Dororo's first scene has them trying to sell goods from a group of bandits that they stole from, before easily outmaneuvering them and running away. Later, they come across a hungry dog, and while Dororo does warm up to the creature, they tell them that they can't give them food or how else will they learn how to survive? This highlights Dororo's thievery skills, love for money, but also that they do have a warm heart deep down and only want to survive in this hard world.

* PleaseDontLeaveMe: In episode 9 Dororo catches an illness, a kind nun lets Dororo sleep in her monastery. He wakes up as Hyakkimaru is out getting water and freaks out that Hyakkimaru left in his sleep.

* ShamefulStrip: [[spoiler:Itachi and his men forcefully strip down Dororo naked to find the map somewhere on Dororo's body only to discover her true gender and the missing half of the map. This leaves Dororo ashamed and disgusted after Itachi and his men saw her body.]]
* SupportingProtagonist: While Dororo is the originator of the manga's title and the kid is a main character, ultimately the primary mover of the story is Hyakkimaru and his quest to get his body back. In the 2019 adaptation, Dororo at least partially reclaims the number one spot as the heart of the story and primary nurturer of Hyakkimaru's morality.

* AdaptationalAttractiveness: None of Hyakki's adaptations feature him as ugly by any means, but the 2019 rendition of Hyakkimaru is much younger looking and far less muscular. The intention was to make him look "cuter" for that version.

* {{Adorkable}}: The more gentle moments when he doesn't know how to deal with things people take for granted. In episode 2, Dororo has to stop him from eating fish raw right off his sword arm. He steps in the fireplace with his own leg, burns it and tries again after wondering how that happened for a moment. Later, Dororo covers his [[spoiler: newly regained]] ears with a piece of cloth and ties it with a bow on the top. When Mio asks him to speak, he closes his mouth and sticks fingers in his ears in refusal.

This comes back to bite him in the butt ''hard'' when he rushes to fight the Arijigoku (antlion demon) while injured [[spoiler:twice. The first time he gets his real foot bitten off. The second time, he ends up leaving Mio and the kids undefended.]]

* {{Bishounen}}: Hyakkimaru in the 2019 anime is basically a living, life-sized ball-jointed doll, and he has a face to match.

* DisabledInTheAdaptation: His counterpart in ''Young Black Jack'', Maruo Hyakki, is a quadriplegic and obviously can't gain the limbs back [[spoiler:or regenerate them]]. He makes do with prosthetics for his hands and a wheelchair.

to:

* DisabledInTheAdaptation: While manga Hyakkimaru and 2019 anime Hyakkimaru are missing all the same parts, 2019 Hyakkimaru lacks most of the telepathic abilities the former had to bypass his lack of ears and vocal cords. Thus he starts the series off as entirely deaf and mute, whereas his manga counterpart could at least communicate verbally.

*EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: In the 2019 adaptation only.

* HellishPupils: In the 2019 anime, Hyakkimaru and Dororo have the same dark red eyes, but Hyakkimaru's eyes alternate between having slit demonic pupils when he is fighting and round human pupils when calm or emotional.

* ItsAllAboutMe: Due to the reveal that his own father took away his body parts in a deal with the demons, Hyakkimaru spitefully refuses to think about the consequences about killing demons will have on others. [[spoiler:This attitude actually disgusts Dororo enough in episode 15 that she leaves him.]]

* LivingEmotionalCrutch: As Hyakkimaru is emotionally stunted and on the borderline between human and demon in the 2019 anime, Dororo reprents his humanity and connection to the outside world.

Son of Daigō Kagemitsu, young Hyakkimaru had his body parts stolen by the demons that his father made a pact with. As a result, the vast majority of his body is prosthetic, and he can't see, hear, smell, or even talk. He goes on a journey to kill the demons and take back his body bit by bit.
----
* AbsoluteCleavage: Hyakkimaru wears a tattered, loose-fitting yukata that leaves the better part of his chest and stomach exposed. 2019 Hyakkimaru starts much more covered up, but loses the BadassCape and scarf after several episodes, rendering him just as exposed as his earlier counterparts.
** The "Hyakki Maruo" version is more of an ''ikemen'', who is still rather muscular and fit despite being quadriplegic.
* AffectionateNickname: Called "Aniki"/"Bro" by Dororo during their travels.
* ArtificialLimbs: And ears, and eyes, and nose...
* BadassAndChildDuo: The Badass to Dororo's Child.
* BadassNormal: It's hard to believe he's a regular human when he slays the biggest and baddest demons that no normal man could ever dream of fighting.
* BerserkerTears: Hyakkimaru does not take the death of Mio well in any of the adaptations. In the 2019 anime he also briefly sheds tears as he delivers the killing blow to the Arijigoku.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: Hyakkimaru's prosthetic arms conceal [[DualWielding a pair of katana]].
* BlindSeer: While he has no eyes, he does have the ability to see the souls, which helps him get by despite the absence of every other sense.
* BlindWeaponmaster: With the weapons as part of his body, no less.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: In the original, Hyakkimaru constantly had to be on the lookout for Dororo's reckless behavior, saving the kid wherever he got in trouble and having to physically pull the kid away from a fight if need be. Less so in the 2019 version, where Hyakkimaru can't take care of anybody in his condition.
* TheCorruption: The boy's soul is mostly white, but streaks of red are always present and threaten to get larger if he doesn't get placed in check.
* {{Cyborg}}: Lampshaded in the manga, where Jukai tells him that he'd be considered one "in sci-fi jargon."
* DependingOnTheWriter: His physical age depends on who writes the adaptation at the time. In most, he's a teenager, but in a few adaptations, he's a young adult during his journey. His hair color also changes from adaptation to adaptation, going from gray to blue to black, while his personality goes from cocksure to a tortured individual.
* DetectEvil: Like with Biwa-Houshi, he can sense the energy of others and can tell what is edible, good/neutral, and evil.
* DrivenToSuicide: [[spoiler:At least two times in the manga he seriously considers killing himself. Luckily, Biwa-Houshi brings him back from the brink each time.]]
* FeelNoPain: As a side effect of having a prosthetic body, Hyakkimaru can survive sword cuts and stabs without so much as flinching. In the remake at least, his sense of pain was one of the things taken from him. [[spoiler:He gets it back after killing Bandai in episode 2.]] He at least discusses this trope in the manga, saying that because he has no pain threshold he also has no idea how much his body can take before giving out.
** Jukai notes that since Hyakkimaru doesn't feel pain, he fights without fear and picks fights without any consideration. [[spoiler: He keeps that trait even when regaining his ability to feel pain.]]
* FriendOrIdolDecision: In ''Blood Will Tell'', [[spoiler: after found out Dororo has a demon inside of her body that contains his last remaining body part. He has two choices: he can either kill her or spare Dororo's life and never get his last body part back. He choose neither and decides to wait for five years until Dororo is old enough and find a way to extract the demon inside of her.]]
* HandicappedBadass: Hyakkimaru, for a certain definition of 'handicapped' - though his goal is to become less handicapped as time goes on.
** One could say he would do better with his handicap, as any major injury can be brushed off since most of his limbs are prosthetics (he once sustained an arrow injury to the back and lived because he hadn't regained it yet) and more than once he's used them to stash hidden weaponry (he did a YourHeadASplode on a nine-tailed fox by throwing his prosthetic nose, which was a bomb, into its mouth). In ''Blood Will Tell'', he gains stats when he recovers his bodyparts, and while he does lose access to various advantages his prostheses provide as he gains his actual bodyparts (specifically, his ArmCannon and LegCannon and his moveset involving his [[DualWielding double]] [[BladeBelowTheShoulder katana arms]]), he gains new abilities in return, such as dashing.
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: According to Biwa-Houshi. He warns Dororo that Hyakkimaru might become the same as the demons he fights.
** [[spoiler: Dororo actually leaves Hyakkimaru after calling him the same as the demons he fights in #15 of 2019 anime.]]
* LightningBruiser: He's very agile and outclasses many demons with his speed. He also packs quite the punch.
* MagicIsAMonsterMagnet: Has a tendency to draw ghouls and demons to him, hence why Jukai saw it necessary to teach him how to fight.
* MeaningfulName: Hyakkimaru's name 百鬼丸 contains the kanji for "hundred demons."
* MosesInTheBullrushes: Was sent drifting down the river either by a father who didn't care what became of him (in the manga) or a midwife who was ordered to drown him but instead took pity on him.
* ParentalAbandonment: Was subjected to this at the very beginning, when his birth father Daigo sacrificed him to demons and then sent him along the river. In the manga at least, he's still rather hurt by his treatment.
* PeekABangs: Generally his bangs will cover his right eye, which is often handy as that's also the eye that he won't get until later.
* PsychicPowers: Hyakkimaru uses these to compensate for his missing bits, using ESP to see and hear, talking telepathically and presumably using telekinesis to do things like moving his food where it's supposed to go until he gets his esophagus back. In the original manga, it's said to be [[NinetyPercentOfYourBrain something anybody can do with practice]] (though he clearly has an unusual aptitude for it), but ''Blood Will Tell'' wisely changes them to mystical powers he was given by the gods to fight the Majin with. Getting each part back increases your stats because it frees up more of his power to use for fighting instead of keeping himself alive.
** PsychicLink: He also has one of these with Dororo. This is a major plot point in the game.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: When Mio and the children are killed by a group of samurai who assumed she was a spy, Hyakkimaru returns to find them slaughtered and goes berserk and brutally killing the ones responsible.
* SamuraiPonytail: A messy one that hints at his heritage.
* SleepsWithBothEyesOpen: Having lived most of his life without eyelids, 2019 Hyakkimaru hasn't gotten into the habit of closing them while he sleeps. Luckily, he doesn't have real eyes to bear the damage.
* TearsOfJoy: Once he finally regains his sight, the first thing he does is weep for joy as he takes a look at Dororo for the first time.
* TerseTalker: 2019 Hyakkimaru gradually becomes one. Even after he starts getting the hang of speaking, he often drops nouns, only uses simple present tense, and tends to resort to sentence fragments when speaking about direct or indirect objects he can't omit entirely.
* TragicKeepsake: [[spoiler:He keeps the rice seeds Mio bought in his pouch.]]
* UnusualWeaponMounting: Hyakkimaru's legs have water guns in their knees, which he uses to douse demons with holy water (he gets his left leg back from the first demon he tries it on). His nose is also an explosive, though luckily he grows a real nose after he uses it to blow a demon fox's head off.

* AdaptationalBadass: The movies and game give Dororo a better fighting chance, allowing the kid to stand on the same ground as Hyakkimaru.
* BadassAndChildDuo: The Child to Hyakkimaru's Badass, at least in the tellings that keep Dororo a child. The kid is not without spunk, however.
* BattleCouple: Eventually with Hyakkimaru in ''Blood Will Tell''.
* BrokenPedestal: [[spoiler:Hyakkimaru's increasingly obsession with killing all demons without regard for the consequences actually disgusts Dororo so much that she leaves him in episode 15.]]

* CharacterTitle: The one and only.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: We see a flashback of Dororo's parents in episode 9 of the 2019 version and a flashback in the manga. His father was a bandit that was dedicated to attacking Samurai that took advantage of farmers like he used to be; while his mother did everything in her power to keep Dororo alive, eventually dying from exhaustion and malnourishment.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: Never wears sandals, or any kind of footwear for that matter. Not unless ankle wraps count.
* HotBlooded: Runs on this in the original and most follow ups, but the 2019 anime plays him up as a cunning {{Determinator}}.
* LargeHam: Has a fondness for ChewingTheScenery. See MouthyKid.
* MadeOfIron: Dororo can take one hell of a beating, and then walk it off like a boss.
* MakeMeWannaShout: Dororo can apparently cause enemies to pass out simply by yelling loud enough. The kid does this twice in volume 2 of the manga, calling it a "secret move".
** He also has this move in ''Blood Will Tell'', but only when he's possessed by the sword 'Nihil' (a.k.a. "Dragon Brood") or [[DesperationAttack is low on life.]]
* MeaningfulName: "Dororo" どろろ is a corruption of "dorobō" どろぼう, which means "thief".
** Fun fact: According to trivia about his childhood, Tezuka's friends couldn't pronounce 'dorobo' correctly. This mispronunciation gave him the name of the series.
* MouthyKid: He avoids becoming a complete BrattyHalfPint by A) actually being as good a thief as he thinks he is, and B) being lively and energetic in a setting where that's in genuine danger of dying out. [[invoked]]
* OppositeSexClone: [[spoiler:Her true purpose in ''Blood Will Tell'', being made out of Hyakkimaru's missing parts.]]
* OnlyFriend: Dororo is Hyakkimaru’s first and only friend he ever made since he doesn’t have many friends close to his age and he lacks social skills.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Most of the time when someone requires Hyakkimaru's assistance to take care of a demon, Dororo is only too glad to offer Hyakkimaru's help, for a price.
* PrecociousCrush: In the series where Dororo is still a child, the kid is implied to have a small crush on Hyakkimaru. You see it with Dororo being embarrassed when naked around Hyakkimaru, and blushing when the latter calls the kid "cute" [[spoiler:after he gets his sight back]].
* RaisedAsTheOppositeGender: [[spoiler:Dororo is a girl, but wasn't even aware of it. His parents raised him as a boy that way and didn't tell him otherwise.]]
* StealthClothes: Whenever Dororo sneaks into a guarded place to steal, he wears the tengui disguise in the manga.
* TagalongKid: Dororo simply tags along without Hyakkimaru's say-so.
* ToBeAMaster: To be the world's greatest thief.
* TheReveal: [[spoiler:Dororo is a girl.]] However this is not the case in the 2019 adaptation, as the creators have gone to say they're not trying to hide [[spoiler:Dororo's sex and gender]] that go around. [[spoiler: She's even worried about what the nun that took care of her when she was sick and washed her clothes might have said.]]
* TreasureMap: [[spoiler:The tattoo on Dororo's back reveals that it is a map to treasure, drawn on her back by her parents.]]
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: [[spoiler: While Hyakkimaru and Dororo are taking a bath, the former tries to get the latter to bathe with him, and in the process discovers Dororo is girl]].
