* StandardFiftiesFather: Oddly enough, pretty close to this in his Fujita Gorou persona. Mild-mannered and humble police officer, unconsciously patriarchal breadwinner, distant ReasonableAuthorityFigure to his children, wholesome imbuer of moral compasses. The biggest difference is that he simply wasn’t around much.

* UnfazedEveryman: He's a sane man in an insane world. He sees absolutely nothing abnormal about running across and talking to {{kitsune}}, youkai, ghosts, kami, and living inanimate objects, even though there's no indication he's seen these things before. At one point he sees Atem in full fox form - a human-sized black fox - sitting in the middle of the road staring at them, and his first action is to ask how they can help it.

* AdjustingYourGlasses: He uses his to 'see' various types of energy other than what he can perceive naturally. And because he's nearsighted.

** JerkAssHasAPoint: He's an asshole, but because he’s the SmartGuy he's usually ''right''. It doesn't make him any more likable.

* PowerTrio: TheSpock to Kenshin’s [[{{TheMcCoy}} McCoy]] and Aoshi’s [[{{TheKirk}} Kirk]].

* BadDreams / RecurringDreams: Implied by Aoshi to have existed before the story, presumably from his life as a Shinsengumi. They get worse in 1945, so that he can't sleep without a supernatural sedative.
** WakeUpFighting: He wakes from his dreams and grabs for his sword. Not finding a sword there to grab sends him into a panic attack sometimes.
