* MayDecemberRomance: If he was indeed the one who had the affair with Matilda of Hull (and most likely, he ''was''), they are an example, since he was forty-four years her senior. Judging by how she helped the Velaryons during the Dance and later brought Corlys's body to Driftmark for burial, it looks like the affair was indeed consensual.

* ICouldaBeenaContender!: if thinks went a bit differently the velaryons might have ruled the Seven Kingdoms. through their marriages they almost got the throne legally from the Targaryens.
** first there was the marriage or Corlys Velaryon and Princes Rhaenys that almost got them the throne but was overlooked during the Great council.
*** Second Time was in the dance of the dragons with Velaryons (on paper at least) being named Princes of dragonstone. thought their deaths robbed them of their victory.

* DefectorFromDecadance: Switches from the Blacks to the Greens after Rhaenyra orders the unjust execution of the loyal Dragonseeds and then has him put on death row for warning Addam. Later does this again after failing to convince Aegon to stand down and peacefully end the war, conspiring to assassinate him with Larys.

* KickTheSonOfABitch: He couldn't do much after his family capitulated to Aegon II, but Alyn did humiliate the king by transporting him back from Dragonstone to King's Landing aboard a derelict cog called ''Mouse'' rather than a warship from the Velaryon fleet. According to historians, it was a deliberate act by Alyn; he wanted the people to see their new king sneaking back into his city like a mouse.

Shoehorns. Always Second Best doesn't read like they were *always* second best, they just decreased in prominence. I Coulda Been A Contender is about a single character who tastes greatness before the attempt is cut short

* AlwaysSecondBest: They were the House closest to the Targaryens. The Hightowers tried to one-up them, causing the Dance of the Dragons. In later years, House Martell came to equal them in Targaryen regard.

* ICouldaBeenAContender: In history, the Velaryons nearly wrestled the Iron Throne twice through legal means:
** During the reign of Jaehaerys I Targaryen, there was a discussion regarding who would succeed him, since most of his children had died while the surviving ones were unavailable. Since Westeros preferred succession through the eldest son, Laenor Velaryon, grandson of Jaehaerys' eldest son to survive infancy, Aemon, through his daughter, Rhaenys, preceded all heirs born by Jaehaerys' other children. When it eventually came down to a vote, pitting Laenor against Viserys, son of Aemon's younger brother Baelon, the latter beat the former by a landslide for three reasons: (1) Laenor was 7 while Viserys was 24, (2), Viserys was a generation older anyway, and (3), the nobles didn't like the idea that Laenor got the candidacy through the female line, which was something they used against Rhaenys when she also nearly inherited the throne years ago. Naturally, the Velaryons were pissed off at the Targaryens for quite a while, and it took Laenor being married off to Rhaenyra, Viserys' daughter, for them to calm down.
** During the Dance of the Dragons, the heir to Rhaenyra Targaryen was her eldest son, Jacaerys Velaryon. After he died, it passed to his younger brother, Joffrey, but then he died, as well, passing the inheritance to their half-brother Aegon, who was fathered by Daemon Targaryen and therefore Targaryen by birth.
