* HonorableWarriorsDeath: As his time was running out, Rogar tried to invoke this by going off to deal with the second Vulture King and his hundreds of bandit followers. Death on the battlefield wound up eluding him, however; thanks to being joined by the King and his forces, the bandits were dealt with easily and when Rogar faced the Vulture King in one on one combat with the Vulture promised his freedom if he defeated Rogar, the Vulture King turned out not to be up to the challenge, despite Rogar being old and his health failing. A disappointed Rogar easily won the fight and went home, where he died in his bed months later.

** Renly declaring himself a King divided the Stormlands into Pro-Stannis and Pro-Renly factions and furthermore alienated outsiders. The North rebelled against the Iron Throne after Ned's capture and execution, and when considering a rival claimant to back rejected Renly leapfrogging the line of succession and setting a dangerous precedent, which coupled with Stannis' silence, led them to declare Robb King in the North. This in turn led the North and Riverland Lords to declare Robb King in the North. [[ForWantOfANail Had it not been for Renly]], the North would have probably rallied behind Stannis as Ned intended, and there would have been a proper alliance against the Lannisters.

An Axe To Grind is no longer a trope

* AnAxeToGrind: Lord Rogar was said to favor a double-bladed axe in combat, one that he often described as "large and heavy enough to cleave through a dragon's skull". While Rogar didn't get the chance to use it against Maegor, he did use his to split the second Vulture King nearly in two.

* AnAxeToGrind: This was his weapon of choice when fighting at melees and tournaments.

* OpportunisticBastard: An implied example. While he pledged fealty to Aegon II at the onset of the Dance of Dragons, he winds up avoiding most of the conflict by taking his army to Dorne to put down incursions lead by a third Vulture King. He only joins Aegon once Rhaenyra has been killed and the Greens had ostensibly won the war, with his army being the only one left intact for the Greens and himself in a position to demand Aegon marry his daughter to cement an alliance. Suffice to say if this was his plan, it backfired terribly on him once the Blacks chose to continue fighting.

Foils need to interact

* {{Foil}}: To Daemon Blackfyre. Both charismatic figures who are backed to usurp the throne despite incredibly weak claims (in Daemon's case, being a bastard and though legitimized still younger then his trueborn brother, in Renly's being the youngest brother), both make enemies of their own blood in doing so, [[spoiler:both ultimately killed by said blood in a fairly underhanded manner, [[HistoricalHeroUpgrade and both considered good kings who never were by their supporters.]]]] Daemon however, was considered an excellent warrior and an otherwise genuine KnightInShiningArmor despite his Rebellion, while Renly likely never fought for real outside of jousts and the like and is quite a SleazyPolitician at heart. [[spoiler:And while Bloodraven utterly loathed the Blackfyres and had zero regrets putting them in the ground, Stannis ends up regretting Renly's demise, and is haunted by whatever culpability he had in his assassination.]]

* {{Foil}}: To Jon Arryn. Both were lords of Great Houses who rose up in revolt against a tyrant king sitting on the Iron Throne (Maegor I and Aerys II) in support of a young man of royal blood under their protection, rather than obey a royal command to hand their ward over for execution. Both proved instrumental in establishing the post-revolution government and would serve as their royal charge's Hand of the King. That said, the relationship between Jaehaerys and Rogar was somewhat more tumultuous than that of Robert and Jon.

* {{Foil}}: His circumstances were very similar to his Westerlands' counterpart Loreon Lannister. They were both the youngest child and only son of their fathers, they had several sisters, and their fathers both died when they were very young. And their maternal grandfathers both served as regents for Aegon III.

* {{Foil}}:
** Lyonel Baratheon can be compared, ironically enough, to both Robb Stark and Walder Frey. He rebels against the Targaryens and secedes the Stormlands from the Seven Kingdoms and revives the pre-Targaryen title of "The Storm King" much like Robb Stark, however his motivations is that Prince Duncan Targaryen broke a marriage contract to his daughter who would have been Queen, like Walder Frey. Where the Freys were famous for being opportunistic and petty, the Baratheons were the oldest and most loyal supporters of the Targaryens, and likewise Lyonel went into open rebellion and conducted himself with honor whereas Walder Frey broke the laws of SacredHospitality.
** When Robert Baratheon made his mark as a great tourney knight, supporters, as per Maester Yandel, saw him as the second coming of the Laughing Storm. He's a BoisterousBruiser in the same fashion of his descendant and also rebelled against the Targaryen crown for legitimate reasons. Robert was a direct beneficiary of Lyonel's rebellion since the peace offering made by Aegon V involved the hand of Princess Rhaelle, which, years down the line, gave Robert a claim to the Iron Throne.
