The English version stars Aileen Quinn as Dorothy and Creator/LorneGreene as the Wizard. A U.S.-Japan coproduction, it was released in the United States first, with the Japanese dub (featuring Mari Okamoto as Dorothy) not released until 1986. Nevertheless, it is considered anime due to being animated and (eventually) released in Japan. It's also one of the few directorial credits for Takayama, who is best known for ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam0080WarInThePocket'' (which curiously also features a character named Dorothy).

Coincidentally, 1986 was also the same year this movie finally saw release in Japan, four years after it was made, which leads to the two works being confused at times (not helped by the fact that the 1986 TV series got a U.S. release too).
