* An IdiotHero who is too much of an idiot.

* TheBully, if they're not an outright HateSink. May be a BigBrotherBully. Gets worse if they're BullyingTheDisabled.

* A {{Jerkass}} who is not funny enough, takes up too much of the spotlight, has no redeeming or sympathetic qualities, has no humanizing moments (or ''does'' but the audience feels they fall short), and/or rarely (if ever) gets any comeuppance. May be a JerkJock or a JerkWithAHeartOfJerk.

* A SoapboxSadie who is preachy and/or advocates DisproportionateRetribution "solutions" to societal conflicts, and is not called out on their actions (or worse, treated as if they are in the right).

* A SoapboxSadie.

* A SmugSnake, especially if they [[MoralEventHorizon ds something so heinous they stop being "cool"]], and nobody scolds them for that and/or does not receive any punishment for it.

* A {{Jerkass}} who is not funny enough, takes up too much of the spotlight, has no redeeming or sympathetic qualities, has no humanizing moments (or ''does'' but the audience feels they fall short), and/or rarely (if ever) gets any comeuppance. May be a JerkJock or a JerkwithAHeartOfJerk.

* An UnintentionallyUnsympathetic character is in high risk.

Scrappies also often fall under a {{Double Standard}}, when popular characters are more likely to be whitewashed and get away with actions that fans would slander an unpopular character for doing.

* TheAce, when used for the wrong situation.

* A DamselInDistress, DistressedDude or DesignatedVictim who makes the audience think "he/she just isn't worth all the trouble". This can easily happen if the character is [[TheLoad useless]] or [[TheMillstone a liability]], especially if he/she keeps getting into trouble and never learns from his/her mistakes. Even if the character does make some useful contributions, the audience may still think they don't outweigh all the trouble the main characters go through to save him/her -- especially if his/her personality isn't particularly likable either (who wants to watch the heroes go on a dangerous adventure just to save a bland or annoying character?). * A DesignatedHero, depending to how much extent is his/her "designated" status of hero and how much the audience think that his/her hero status is undeserved.

* A FauxActionGirl, especially if there are genuine [[ActionGirl Action Girls]] in the cast and the story focuses mostly on her.
* A particularly blatant FlatCharacter or StaticCharacter, even more so if s/he is part of a cast that has many fully [[RoundedCharacter fleshed-out characters]].

* A SmugSnake, especially if he/she [[MoralEventHorizon does something so heinous they stop being "cool"]], and nobody scolds him/her for that and/or does not receive any punishment for it.

* A VillainProtagonist if they are extremely heinous and don't have [[EvilIsSexy any]] [[EvilIsCool positive]] and[=/=]or [[CryForTheDevil sympathetic]] [[MagnificentBastard trait]] (and even then, the audience supposedly have to sympathize for him/her), as well as that most are {{Karma Houdini}}s.

In addition, if the writers begin relying too heavily on an already-present character with some potentially annoying quirks (like TheUnintelligible or the NonHumanSidekick), the viewers may begin to find him/her very annoying indeed. Sometimes even a very popular character is at risk of becoming a Scrappy when he or she wears out his or her welcome [[WolverinePublicity by being overexposed]].

* A SmallAnnoyingCreature who annoys and/or causes all the bad things to happen to the protagonists.
* A SmugSnake, especially if he/she [[MoralEventHorizon does something so heinous they stop being "cool"]], and nobody scolds him/her for that and/or does not receive any punishment for it.

* A DistressedDamsel, DistressedDude or DesignatedVictim who makes the audience think "he/she just isn't worth all the trouble". This can easily happen if the character is [[TheLoad useless]] or [[TheMillstone a liability]], especially if he/she keeps getting into trouble and never learns from his/her mistakes. * Any character that reeks of PositiveDiscrimination.

* An IdiotHoudini who (somehow) gets away with some pretty bad behaviors simply because they "don't know better".

* A poorly-written PluckyComicRelief, when is more annoying that funny, or fails trying to be plucky and/or funny.

* A RecklessSidekick risks becoming this if he or she contributes nothing to the action except acting stupid and getting captured all the time, especially if he or she never learns from his or her mistakes.

* A VillainProtagonist if is extremely heinous and doesn't have [[EvilIsSexy any]] [[EvilIsCool positive]] and[=/=]or [[CryForTheDevil sympathetic]] [[MagnificentBastard trait]] (and even then the audience supposedly have to sympathizing for him/her), as well as that most are {{Karma Houdini}}s.

While much usually depends on execution, certain kinds of characters have a much higher probability of being unintentionally hated:

* A video game character or toy character who makes annoying sounds.

* A video game character or toy character who makes the DarthWiki/MostAnnoyingSound.

* A video game character or toy character who makes the MostAnnoyingSound.

* A DistressedDamsel, DistressedDude or DesignatedVictim who makes the audience think "he/she just isn't worth all the trouble". This can easily happen if the character is [[TheLoad useless]] or [[TheMillstone a liability]], especially if they keep getting into trouble and never learn from their mistakes. Even if the character does make some useful contributions, the audience may still think they don't outweigh all the trouble the main characters go through to save him/her -- especially if his/her personality is perceived as bland, bitchy, etc. See DamselScrappy.

* A {{Jerkass}} who is not funny enough, takes up too much of the spotlight, has no redeeming or sympathetic qualities, has no humanizing moments (or ''does'' but the audience feels they fall short), and/or rarely (if ever) gets any comeuppance.

* A LoveInterest or potential love interest who has [[SatelliteLoveInterest no other defined personality traits outside of being somebody's love interest]].

* A SmugSnake, especially if he/she [[MoralEventHorizon does something so heinous they stop being "cool"]], and nobody scolds him/her for that and/or does not received any punishment for its.

* In video games, ThatOneBoss when it's especially frustrating.

* Any character that is rife with UnfortunateImplications.
* An UngratefulBastard.

* An AnimateInanimateObject or a GratuitousAnimalSidekick just added to appeal to kids and that is otherwise unappealing.
* An AnnoyingYoungerSibling, a BrattyHalfPint, a BrattyTeenageDaughter[=/=]Son, a SpoiledBrat, a RichBitch, or a RoyalBrat, ''especially'' if they don't grow out of it.

* A DesignatedHero, depending to how much extent is his/her "designated" status of hero and how much the audience think that his/her hero status is unfair.

* The UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist who treats the TokenGirl[=/=][[TheOneGuy Guy]] like crap.

* A BumblingDad who is too much of an idiot and a {{jerkass}}, especially when he treats his family like crap.

Occasionally, a character intended as a ButtMonkey will backfire and become a Scrappy, too. This usually happens when a writer attempts to make his mishaps even funnier by making him an unlikeable person to whom it's very satisfying to see horrible things befall. A great idea, but sometimes it backfires when the ButtMonkey becomes so annoying that whatever happens to him in the story, audiences are haunted by the feeling that it will never be enough. An especial risk when the ButtMonkey gags are prolonged, after which even a character who's not inherently unlikeable can stop being funny and become a DamselScrappy. It also comes full-circle in a way; note also that many Scrappies can easily become {{Butt Monkey}}s when touched upon in fan discussions and literary parodies. In any given HateFic, and even in the occasional straight-up FanFic, the author may very likely go a step further than making TheScrappy into the ButtMonkey, killing him or her off (often brutally), or giving a "hero" Scrappy a FaceHeelTurn [[RonTheDeathEater so he becomes the villain]] - after which he again will likely be killed off.

* An InvincibleHero and/or a InvincibleVillain.

* A SmugSnake, especially if he/she [[MoralEventHorizon does something so heinous they stop being "cool"]], and nobody scolds him for that and/or does not received any punishment for its.
