* Early access to new instalments or related works via a paid subscription (e.g. webcomics or songs released early to Patreon supporters) doesn't count as a release. This differs from normal early access as you can't buy a specific work or instalment -- and payments are intended as an ongoing commitment.

* Any form of early release covered by a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) isn't counted as a release. The usual ContentLeak policy applies to information that's still under NDA.

to:

* Any early access that's strictly limited to a small group such as UsefulNotes/{{Kickstarter}} or Backerkit supporters (e.g. those who pre-ordered the work at a very early stage), without scope for others to obtain the same access, doesn't count as a release.

* This is an English-language wiki, but it covers works in many languages. We don't have to wait for an official (or fan) translation if a work isn't initially released in English -- it still counts as a release.

to:

!!What counts as a release?
* TV Tropes is an international site and we don't use any particular market as a benchmark for releases. If it's available in UsefulNotes/{{Liechtenstein}} but not yet on sale in the rest of the world, that's still a release.
* If the general public can simply pay extra for early access to the work, that generally counts as a release. There may be exceptions when the price is ''extremely'' high and/or early access is only available for a limited number of people. These can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

!!What doesn't count as a release?
* If the work is only made available to an invited audience, or only to those with industry connections (e.g. a screening at the Cannes Film Festival), then that's not counted as a release.

* Subpages such as {{Trivia}}, [[YMMV/HomePage YMMV]] and {{WMG}} can be created for an unreleased work, but {{Recap}} pages must not be created until after the work (or the relevant instalment of the work) is released.

** AudienceReactions ''may not'' be used if the particular reaction is dependent on the full work. For example, BestKnownForTheFanservice requires seeing the rest of the work to know if the fanservice is the most memorable part of it.

** AudienceReactions ''may not'' be used if the particular reaction is dependent on the full work. For example, BestKnownForTheFanservice requires seeing the rest of the work to know if the fanservice is the most memorable part of it. The same goes for {{Headscratchers/Headscratchers}} -- the work, once released, will likely give an answer to pre-release questions, so there's no sense in creating a Headscratchers/ page before it's even out.

* Since multiple teaser images are usually released to the public when a work is in the pre-release state, [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=16715679230.57447800&page=1#19 it's been ruled]] that whatever promotional image is placed on the page when it's first created is to be left in place until the work is officially released. Further images released in the interim are to be placed on an Image Links page for the work. Once the work is released, an IP thread can be started to decide what will be the "official" image on the page.

* Never add pre-hidden (i.e. [=%% * BadassBoast=]) examples. This is more often than not an attempt to get around other rules around unreleased works. If an example can't fit based on pre-release materials, don't try to circumvent it by having it commented out ahead of time.

Because of that, we have certain rules for these kinds of work pages. We don't stop people from creating them -- we do love some good {{wiki magic}} -- but due to over-enthusiasm they attract lots of natter and speculation. And, thus, good members of this community have had to do lots of clean-up.

These kinds of works inhabit a grayer area for the wiki. There’s mass-consumable '''parts''' of the work, and its advertising, but not a whole product. As such, it's not a completely unpublished work, but it’s not a wholly released work.
